E3 2014: Nintendo's Take on Skylanders Is Called Amiibo

Buy toys of your favourite Nintendo characters, and fight them in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Update: Following its Digital Event this morning, Nintendo provided a list of future games that will support Amiibo. In addition to Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8, Yoshi's Woolly World, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and Mario Party 10 will also make use of Amiibo, although Nintendo didn't share any specifics.

Original Story: Nintendo has officially unveiled its own take on Activision's super successful Skylanders series, and it's called Amiibo.

Amiibo is described as a Toys to Life product--like Disney Infinity or Skylanders--and will launch later this year alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. Players are able to press a real-life action figure against the Wii U GamePad to conjure up a character in Super Smash Bros. that can assist you, spar against you, or even take part in Amiibo vs. Amiibo fights. Information on each Amiibo is stored in the toy itself, and allows it to level up through battle, learn new tactics, and customize its special moves. Nintendo says that a well-trained Amiibo in Super Smash Bros. will make for a formidable opponent.

The first range of Amiibo figures will feature Nintendo favourites Pikachu, Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Kirby, Animal Crossing's Villager, Samus, Link, Wii Fit Trainer, and Donkey Kong. Wait, Wii Fit Trainer gets a figure at the start and Luigi doesn't?

Nintendo will also release a peripheral in 2015 that will allow Amiibo figures to work with 3DS titles. Alongside Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U, Amiibo will support Mario Kart 8, though Nintendo is yet to explain how that will work. Many upcoming Nintendo games will also support the service.

I really don't like the sound of this, for smash brothers I mean....

This seems pretty uniquely targeted at the kids' market, so why a Wii Fit Trainer figure?

So it says i can more or less buy Link for Mariokart? Cool.

It was just a matter of time.

Remember one of the early Wii U announcements when they placed figures on the Wiipad?

So these are essentially memory cards inside a non-posable toy, is that what these are?  You plug them into your controller, and it has data on which character it is and stores data on you much you've progressed this character?

As an adult, if I owned a Wii U, and these things actually had use in numerous games, I would just want a simple memory card with this data.  Having to buy a big toy is kind of off-putting.

Or ideally I would just want this data stored online, and not have a need for any external plug-in.

If Nintendo wants to make toys they should just make toys.

this is so stupid.  Who are they trying to sell to? 5 year olds?

One doubt comes into my mind, are we going to be able to play online with these amiibos, or will they be for local play only?

This just smells desperate.

This only means that those cool figurines will actually have some use beyond being a decoration.  I'm not too keen on the Infinity or Skylanders sets, but considering I have bought static figurines in the past, this increases their value from the perspectives of both a collector and a gamer.

All of you are bunch of cry babies. Amiibo doesn't ruin anything. SSB will play as always.

Now, all we need is an Amiibo X Pokémon Coliseum game.

Interesting.  So, basically you can bring in these Amiibos to be a custom AI opponent.  It's a gimmick, yeah, but it doesn't seem like an invasive one.  It's an unnecessary extra for those who want it.

Another pointless gimmick...  And Smash Brothers is ruined.

Can they localize the name so it sounds less stupid? I guarantee nobody is going to ask for Amiibos at the game store, they'll just say "Do you have any Nintendo figures?"

Screw you Nintendo...You ruined my favorite game series of all time with physical micro-transactions....

So the only way to play as Mario or Link (or other character), you'll need to have the Amiibo?  If thats true then that sucks.

So we can't have the characters in the game like we use to... Wii U already isn't making much money why are they doing something like this that takes away from the game...And also costs more money.  If you want the amiibo to be special put characters that has nothing to do with the regular characters that are in the game. What happened to that collaboration Tekken and Nintendo suppose to have.

@worksap It might just be a way to carry around custom movesets to a friend's house. I'm hoping that's the case, anyway.

@hahamanin

It's not so much about whining - it's about being ignorant and crude at heart.

You shouldn't expect too much from average gamers, as they aren't exactly philosophers or connoisseurs, you know. There is a reason why uninspired and tacky shooting games or uninspired and pseudo-realistic games about superfluous and overpriced cars are still so popular.

@YouEnjoyMyFluff The only thing stupid about it, is that they should have started this years ago when the Wii U was out and before Skylanders.

@nurnberg Its ridiculous but optional its ruin nothing(except the pockets of dumb parents), besides remembe what Fill-Ames said, the Amiibo works on almost all of Nintendo games.

@nurnberg The game you love is still there with these figurines being entirely optional. So stop being dramatic.

@arrow2thekneeXD How is it ruined?  The game will still play the way it's always played, just now you can take your characters stats anywhere with you.

@daikkenaurora12 No, it works like having a personal customized CPU with custom move sets that you can take to a friends Wii U and train to aid you in battles. The core game remains untouched.

sanchango

@GuyverX WHY ARE YOU GUYS ASSUMING TOO MUCH?! Jesus christ people. This is just an optional choice. All the characters that have been/will be revealed will still be there on disc. The Amiibo is there to have your own specalized character. It will not make the game suck. It will not impede your progress in the game. It is not needed to unlock characters. It is not a required thing. It does not lock you from certain content. It is just an option that you don't have to buy(sorry for the redundancy). You can literally pick the one character you main(when it becomes available) and that's all you will have to pay. If you want more characters, then you can buy them at your own leisurely time.

Qmajinbuu
Qmajinbuu

@GuyverX It never said we can't have the characters in the game like before.  If anything, this just makes it for you can purchase characters early if you want to instead of unlocking them

daikkenaurora12
daikkenaurora12

@xxxchris Oh Okay.  Thank you for the clarification.  I though it was like the Disney Infinity were you have to buy the figure to play that characters world.

castanedajosee

@chev93489 @GuyverX Though they are "optional" they are still forcing you to buy one. How? well if you saw the video where they talk more about amiibo they announced how this guy stat can be upgraded. If i'm not mistaken they can be 9x stronger than a default roster. Now this is where you realize the optional object isn't so optional. You see, since this figurine are 9x stronger than a default smash bros character (if fully upgraded), those figurine will easily wipe the floor against non amiibo. In other words unless you don't want to loose every time you go against one you will have to buy one and watching all the people who want one i'l say this amiibo will be quite common throughout the game. What is even worse is that this toys wont be so cheap (i think) making you loose a couple bucks. This also take out the point of being a skilled player from the game, now is pay too win & best stats, which for me takes out the fun of the game. In my oppinion i see this figurine as a tool to help those who suck at the game win all the time. I can also see how other people find them as good collectible figures to put up in their room but the reality they where made for as scam to take out the money out of those sucky players <---- that part is still my opinion.

Qmajinbuu
Qmajinbuu

@xxxchris @Qmajinbuu @nurnberg Wow...... great answer........ LOL.  So when it comes down to it, SSB will play the way it's always played,(nothing has been said about gameplay changing, nor has anything been said about the Amiibo being the only way to unlock people) but it's ruined since they added amiibo which you can completely avoid if you want?

cheesy-cat
cheesy-cat

@castanedajosee Except that you CANNOT control the amiibo characters. Just because you're not skilled at playing and you used an amiibo to assist you, you'd still suck, even if your character won, because it won for you. They'd most likely be usable for local or friendly play anyway, so it wouldn't matter how skilled you are. It's not a scam, it's an extra feature to make the game more interactive and fun—completely optional. Your opinion isn't bad, it's just faulted by misinformation; i.e. "forcing you to buy one...pay [to] win"; you can't control your amiibo.
