PlayStation TV is finally coming to America and Canada this fall. Sony released this bite-size device in Japan last year, and it's a handy gadget for those who like handy things. It hooks up to your television and lets you play Vita games on a big screen or stream PlayStation 4 to another TV in your house (assuming you already have that console). It will also stream PlayStation Now, which makes it a versatile purchase if you're anxious for more ways to play the games you love.
Would someone mind explaining this thing to me, I am really confused about it. So I can plug it into any tv and play PS3/PS4 games?
Good idea on paper but in execution its probably pretty lousy depending on bandwidth and such unless you stick to PS1/PS2 games. The PS4 streaming functionality would only be cool for a split screen style game or 2 player games. It's not like you can fire up Battlefield and have your friend use this as a standalone PS4 to play with you in a different room. So if ya already have a PS3 or PS4 this would just be a waste of 100 bones.
Ok so unless I overlooked where they stated this I have a genuine question. Using the PSTV to stream a PS4 to a separate TV can I play co-op games with a friend without an entirely separate console? If so, that would sell it for me almost by itself.
Makes me wonder if this device will be included on the next PS4 redesign. Which will likely be introduced at the next E3...
I've almost decided not to get another Xbox One and have no interest in PS4, so if Microsoft was to release and Xbox TV with Kinect, I'd be on board, especially if it let me stream PC and Windows Phone games to my TV while having the same environment, light games, and apps from Xbox One. Will never happen, but I'd be all over it if it did.
When I first heard about this I was like "Ugh... more TV crap". Then I read the article and found out that this thing is more than just a tv hardware. I will get this when I get my PS4.
To all those who can't read: The PS TV device is basically a screenless Vita that can play Vita games, PSOne & PS2 classics, as well as stream other services available through PSN like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and soon PS Now. It's a $100 stand alone gaming console.
It can also be used to play PS4 remotely on another TV in your house not connected to your PS4.
Lmao oh the irony. All the Sony fanboys bashing the X1 because of the Kinect (which is worth $99...coincidence?) and it's lack of focus on just games....and here we are with the $99 PS4 TV device. Classic ;)
might be a worthwhile purchase since it can play the Vita cartridges I already own
wonder what Tearaway and Killzone Mercenary would look like on a large TV
I will totally buy the Playstation TV micro console. The $139.99 bundle with the Controller, PSvita TV console, HDMI cable and 8GB Psvita memory card. And the "pack in" game of sorts. Download code for Marvel Lego Superhero's
Those 8GB memory cards don't go very far. I killed off the one that came with the PSvita 2000 almost instantly Borderlands 2 took most of that up.
I'll have to get a 32GB or 64GB memory card to get the most out of Playstation TV and PSvita 2000.
HAHA here it is sony lovers.. not only did your dear sony bring tv to your ps4 they are gonna charge you 100 bucks to watch tv on it LMAO. i told you all sony is the most greedy of them all
@DemonicChaosXX Yes, but you need a PS4 on the same network.
The PS1/PS2/PS3 get streamed from their servers...
@franken_stein Not necessarily. It's also a PSVita, which is normally $200, but without its screen. Personally, there's a bunch of Vita games that I want to play super badly (mainly Japanese imports) so I'm probably gonna buy it. It's worth it to have just as a PSVita on your big-screen, but its streaming capability (which already works on some LG tvs with no extra hardware) is fairly robust, using NVIDIA's GRID appliances. Simply put, if you have enough of an internet connection to watch youtube videos, you can play older games (probably at 480-720p).
@playstationzone What planet are you from?
@jamiejamie8 According to this article, which is a pretty old article since it dates back in September 2013
Yes you can with Knack as the example. However they are not entirely sure if it will work with every game.
@vladric In the same way that the guy who invented the car copied the guy who invented the chariot, yes.
@vladric Depends I guess, I don't keep up with the X1 much so I wouldn't know where it copied what element. Main reason I'm getting one is because it can play Vita, PS1&PS2 classics, and stream PS Now/PS4 games. The Playstation TV (Vita TV in Japan) was already made over there a good while ago. Probably not before X1 and all of its multimedia purposes but Sony is basically just importing the thing over here. It might even sell better here since the Japanese are always on the go so it doesn't sell very well over there.
@Threesixtyci I have my sights set on the glacier white PS4 Destiny bundle in September but knowing Sony they'll probably have a Super Casual Slim Ultra Portable Mega Media Eco Friendly edition or whatever the hell model soon afterwards.
@DrKill09 and PS1 and PS2 games.
@DrKill09 it does it also streams your ps4 games to another tv
@ketsuhige The power of reading! Which unfortunately eludes the grasp of many.
When I first read of the "Vita TV", seriously why did they change the name of this thing, I thought it could only play some Vita games and stream PS4 games in another room if you have the console. Being able to play PS1/PS2 classics and be a TV set top box is a big bonus to me.
@lithus Dood, this thing is so superior to Kinect in almost every way imaginable. It's the box Apple TV, Chrome, Amazon and Ouya dream of. All Sony has to do is advertise it.
@lithus Well this doesn't have a spy camera on it, soooo...
@lithus ...except it also is a standalone console and can play games. not an add-on for the PS4
@Spartan_418 play a killzone game on on ps2 on a large tv
@Megavideogamer and i am sure you would rebuy all ur old games on ps now too then rebuy the ps4 remasters games too . good way to show your love for sony i guess
@monson21502 Yeah I mean its not like MS didnt charge people to use their own headset. That would be crazy.
@monson21502 It is not for watching television. Know what you are talking about before you open your pie hole.
@monson21502 Um, dude. You seem to have completely misunderstood what this device actually is and what it does.
Try to be less of an ignorant fanboy who spends all day fapping to one console and whining about another. I honestly don't care what one you hate and what one you love. This sort of behavior is seriously pathetic. Grow up.
@gogoleafs So I can use any tv, even an old one to play PS1/Ps2/Ps3 games? Sorry If I am sounding stupid, I'm just so confused about this whole thing
@monson21502 I already have Killzone 1 on PS3
Mercenary on Vita actually looks a lot better
learn to type
@Lhomity @monson21502 yeah its a 100 dollar paper weight that sony wont outbid to get the rights to tv shows they dont already own. do you think google or apple will set there and let sony run wild without paying networks for exclusive rights to all the big shows. all they have to do is force sony out for a year or two and sony will drop this like a bad habit . any 1 who buys this is a bigger fool then i thought
@daikkenaurora12 @Redsyrup @lithus I have a PS4 and X1 they are both great but his point was that this is not all about games... That was the big rip on X1 was that it was not just about the games.... Personally I think its a great device to have for gaming and watching content but to rip the X1 for not being about games means this device should be ripped as well.
@monson21502 PlayStation TV is a standalone device, you seem to think it's an add-on for the PS4
@gogoleafs No PS3/4 needed?
@DemonicChaosXX @gogoleafs No PS1/PS2/PS3 needed to play PS1/PS2/PS3 games, BUT!!! YES you will need a PS4 to play PS4 games...
@gogoleafs ok, hopefully last questions XD Think there might be a monthly fee? also do I need to buy PS3 games?
@DemonicChaosXX @gogoleafs You pay a monthly fee to play all games but the PS4 games, the PS4 games you buy and play on your PS4 system.
All other games (PS1/PS2/PS3) you play as long as you pay your subscription...
No you do NOT need to buy any PS1/PS2/PS3 games...
