E3 2011: Walking Dead Preview Impressions

Those lousy zombies are at it again in this upcoming adventure game based on the popular comic book.

No matter how far you run, you can't escape from the unrelenting pursuit of a hungry zombie. Walking Dead is a popular comic book series that has spawned a television program and now, thanks to Telltale Games, a video game as well. Although this adaptation is still quite early, we did find out a few details about the story and basic gameplay structure in a sit-down conversation with the developers today.

In the comic books, you follow Rick Grimes in his attempt to break out of Atlanta. However, the protagonist in the game is a new character. You play as Lee Everett, who's trying to make his way into the zombie-invested Deep South. His journey begins in the back of a prison transportation vehicle. Road travel during these dangerous times is tricky business, so it's no surprise when the truck crashes. Everett wakes up alone in the zombie apocalypse, the worst place you could imaginably be during such a hectic time.

Everett doesn't go through the game alone, though. He meets an abandoned child named Clementine, left to fend for herself with her parents gone missing. You can't just turn your back on a child in need, so you take her along on your journey. You also cross paths with characters from the comic book. Everett bumps into Glenn and Lily, giving a solid connection to the source material.

We didn't get to see any gameplay (or any footage at all, for that matter), but we were told vaguely how things would play out. Walking Dead takes its action cues from the upcoming adventure game Jurassic Park. In that, you perform quick-time events during intense scenes, and we were told that Walking Dead's action would evolve on that concept.

Walking Dead is much darker than what Telltale usually makes, though it certainly sounds intriguing from a conceptual standpoint. Keep reading GameSpot to find out more information on this upcoming adventure. Walking Dead is set to come out this winter.

I am a fan of zombie games, but one thing that I relly would enjoy its a zombie survival game...not just killing and shooting, its would be great to be in a infested zombie town and scavenger the food and ammo.

@deftones00 Check out Project Zomboid. It's an indie game in pre-alpha, but the point of it is that you've to try and survive as long as you can, and you will most certainly die. It's great, even during early development.

I already am skeptical about this game. It's gonna be like Lost: Via Domus where you play as someone else rather than the actual characters. The guys said (in gameinformer I think) that "if you don't feel like you're in the comic book, we did something wrong" and they just did.

For me, the atmosphere and story are what I will play this game for. The gameplay, as long as it's unobtrusive, I don't care as much about.

all of your points sound good about this game, but one stands out, that they better do it right.

I read Clementine and I thought about RE4... I don't want to take care of a child in a city full of zombies

It better have rpg elements, The Walking Dead is all about scavenging supplies, food, and finding shelter to make safe. I think there should also be driving in it, maybe some zombie smashing sections with a big ol' suv. I know some things like a tank would be out of the question. I'm worried about the quick-time events, that sounds like an easy way out to me,hopefully it wont set the tone of the game.

@deftones00 That's EXACTLY the kind of zombie apocalypse game that I want. I can only dream! :D I couldn't agree with you more on all of your points.

@Elann2008 I agree with you there. No one has really been able to capture the whole 'survival' element of what made zombie survival games great, like Resident Evil 1 and 2. Capcom have gone down a path which totally detaches themselves to zombies altogether now, which is a great shame. When I first heard about Dead Island, in 2008 I think it was, with their plans of just having shuffling zombies slowly advancing on your position - that really sounded like it could capture the essence of zombies, but now it is just like Left 4 Dead (which don't get me wrong, is a great game in it's own right) with an emphasis on melee. Someone needs to make a zombie game that makes you feel like you're living through an actual zombie apocalypse - in which you are constantly aware of the danger and desperately try to avoid that fatal bite, while struggling to make it through on what little ammunition is available (I would also love the concept of having to find food and water to be included, but I know that this could make the game too challenging). I've become tired of being that invincible hero that somehow managed to find 500 bullets for an M4 that just happened to be lying next to the post office.

Yeah the only made 6 episodes without knowing just how good it would be recieved, of course if they had known how well it would have been recieved they would have made more. I'm sure it's not that easy to develop quality like what was seen in the first 6 episodes, and it's a "t.v. series" amazingwork

@carolynmichelle then I wonder how far they will go, the comics are explicitly graphic I think that's why the TV series didn't follow the comics closely. If I am correct this will be Telltale's first M rated story assuming that they tell the story in its entirety.

I feel like everyone is trying to make a zombie game, but they all fall flat. Can someone please step up to the plate and deliver the zombie game of my dreams? Dead Island seems like it will be fun but it's definitely not what I was looking for.

@mortis1982 I was at this conversation as well, and I can tell you that, according to Telltale at least, the comic books are the gospel truth for the purposes of developing this game, and they indicated that nothing in the game will contradict the comics.

I hope it's as good as the T.V. show and the comic. The T.V. show was incredible. Some of the best acting and script writing I've seen in a long time. The new season starts this fall in October. Hopefully they will have more then 6 episodes this time. I checked and it looks like there will be 13 episodes (more then twice of last season). Thank god. I'm going to watch the first 6 espisodes again on Blu-Ray and be ready for the new season.

Walking dead = zombie....

I'm intrigued, mostly because of my love of The Walking Dead series and zombie games as a rule, but... Quick time events? I thought we were moving past those. In this gen, it always feels like the developer ran out of ideas or something. Elaborate use of QTE always feels like they are cheating me. Taking a wait and see on this one.

@mwhardcore The first season was just a pilot thats why it was only 6 episodes. Season 2 starts in October and will be 12-13 episodes. They also got picked up for a 3rd season :)

Hopefully it will follow the comic books and not the TV show. Don't get me wrong TV show is great, but I do wish they would have followed the comic more closely. @mw2hardcore 2nd season will be coming this fall, they are filming it right now.

I really want to see what kind of visual style telltale games will use on this one. There last games have been cel-shaded which isn't the first thing that comes to mind when i hear 'zombies'
