E3 2011: Mass Effect 3 Preview Impressions, Part 2 -- EA Press Conference

Casey Hudson shows off Mass Effect 3 at EA's E3 2011 press conference.

By the time Electronic Arts began its E3 2011 press conference, Microsoft had already shown one of next year's most anticipated games: Mass Effect 3. Not to be outdone, EA kicked off its presser by showing off a completely different part of the game. Mass Effect Executive Producer Casey Hudson took the stage to tell us that on March 6, 2012, war begins. The ominous galactic race known as the Reapers have carved a path of destruction on their way to Earth. Hudson stated that the action and tension of the series will be at their peak in Mass Effect 3 and that longtime players will be able to see what their choices up to this point might lead to.

The gameplay demo was an assault on a Reaper base. With the Normandy on standby, Shepard must target a specific point at the base for destruction. After a short firefight with a couple of armored Cerberus troops, Shepard marks the spot, and the Normandy, piloted by Joker, drops its ordnance there. Unfortunately, the walkway on which Shepard stands collapses, and he falls to a platform beneath. At this point, a fearsome image takes over the screen: a humongous Reaper rises up, its giant legs straddling the walkway as Shepard moves ahead, taking shots at more troops as they fly up from below using their jetpacks.

Shepard finally reaches a vehicle piloted by a Geth teammate (Legion, presumably) and leaps into place behind a turret. As the craft speeds away, Shepard takes aim at the gargantuan scorpionlike Reaper trudging threateningly toward him. After a few moments of shooting, the Reaper goes down in an eruption of smoke and flames. It's a temporary respite, however: the Reaper rises up a few seconds later and renews its chase. Shepard renews his shooting, and… the demo ends.

Hudson told the crowd that there would be more large-scale battles such as this one, in addition to the standard action and choice-making for which the series is known. It was a short demo, but enough to make us excited to see more on the E3 2011 show floor. In addition, BioWare is scheduled to show off Mass Effect 3 on GameSpot's live show on Wednesday, so be sure to tune in for more Milky Way mayhem then!

@ronnet, I know what you mean and that's exactly the problem I'm having with the Dragon Age series (attempts to streamline mechanics have removed an organic feeling previous titles had). I think with both ME and DA, the most frustrating part of the sequels are the things that were good. It makes you see the hints of the games they could have been and it's downright maddening. I'll follow both franchises to their conclusion out of interest in the storylines. But I'll be waiting much longer to purchase the third game for either franchise; I want the prices to come down and I want a wealth of pro and user reviews before I make the decision to fork over the cash. If I decide they aren't worth my dollars, then I can always speed through a let's play on youtube tog et the story.

Racking my head to figure out why Cerberus is against Shepard, the Illusive man knows Shepard is vital for any chance of winning so he certainly won't have any illusions of defeating and taking Reaper technology by himself. Or maybe he has a trick up his sleeve. Or maybe the reapers indoctrinated him. Or maybe there's an even better twist that no one's thought of! Can't wait!!

IMO, DA2 obviously wasnt the awesome game Origins was, but I don't think it sucked as much as everyone says it is. Bioware just tried too hard to make it less clunky than the original (eg. the shuffling to backstab in Origins), and ended up with a much more action-oriented RPG than what we hoped to get. With a game like Mass Effect, where everyone uses guns, its much harder to achieve that RPG feeling without screwing up the gameplay. In the end, its all about what YOU think makes an RPG. I think Mass Effect is definitely an RPG, albeit less traditional. Bioware is an awesome company and I love both the DA and ME series. Looking forward to ME3!

@millahnna, I don't even think BIoware knows what an RPG is. ME2's distinctive seperation of combat and 'talking' zones was a big problem for me. You had these areas where you could buy some upgrades and talk to characters about missions. Then these missions would start as instances that were just long shoot-outs with no real RPG elements to them. Unlike ME1 where the shooting, talking, leveling, etc were all part of the same gameplay flow. You could be talking to someone in a city and suddenly you could be in a fight. It didnt feel like BIoware as ashamed of their RPG roots and tried to hide them in brief 'talking zones'. Once again the combat zones look awesome, but that was never ME2's problem. The problem was the amount fo combat zones as well as their duration compaired to the talking zones. And the fact that such a clear distinction was made in the first place! I will buy this game no doubt, I want to know how the trilogy ends. But I fear this wont be the best in the trilogy (still ME1, even with its shortcommings) and I'll probably will say farewell to ME after I've finished this thirdpersonshooter.

The coverage looks great but after watch Hudson refer to moddable guns as part of an increased focuse on RPG elements I have very strong concerns that EA's stink is going to be all over this one.

Bioware better not disappoint like they did with DA2. I will never forgive them for that undelivered promise.

I thought it took a whole armada to take down a reaper ? Still very excited for this . I'm sinking my teeth into Mass effect 2 . Hope i can keep Legion alive this time .

Yes, turret sequences. That is exactly what is needed to pump excitement into a game. No. Nonono. That is the LAST THING ME3 needed. What a bland bland demo. Ah well, ME3 will still kick ass, even if it falls prey to a bland TPS trope or two.

@kazumashadow If you've played ME1 than you should know that Cerberus will stop at nothing to get what they want, and that's power in any form, regardless of the risks & what they've gotta do to accomplish this. I'm glad we're figthing them again.

Downing a Reaper in a few shots from a turret? I know it says it gets back up, but that sounds like a pretty weak Reaper.

The demo they showed had too much solo Shepard. I hope they don't take your team mates out thr gameplay and relegate them to purely NPC roles.

so legion is strapped and ready for another deployment in ME3? excellent. I love the concept of his teaming with the Normandy crew. I'm going to need Wrex to get off of his scaly backside, Garrus AND jack backing me if this new party is going to swing though. PLEASE bring them all back for this episode.

@bugbag....agreed. the EA conference was very enjoyable, and made up for the MS snoozefest. ME3 looks absolutely amazing, although I chuckled a little when Shep was shooting a turret at a Reaper. That's not gonna work!
