E3 2011: Mass Effect 3 in effect March 6

BioWare dates delayed third installment in its sci-fi RPG series, which will support Kinect voice commands.

by

The first day of the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo kicked off with Microsoft's press conference. On hand at the event was BioWare head and cofounder Dr. Ray Muzyka, who showed off the Kinect functionalities of Mass Effect 3. The Xbox 360 version of the sci-fi role-playing game will let players give voice commands in combat via the camera-based motion sensor, as well speak lines of dialogue during character interaction sessions.

Mass Effect 3 is due on March 6, 2012.

Later, at Electronic Arts' E3 press briefing, Mass Effect 3 got a release date after suffering a delay last year. The game will now arrive on the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 on March 6, 2012. Previously, it had been scheduled for a holiday 2011 release.

The third installment in BioWare's epic sci-fi role-playing game series, Mass Effect 3 sees planet Earth under siege. The attackers are the Reapers, a race of heavily armed sentient spacecraft that were central to the plot of the first Mass Effect. The Reapers' return to the series was concretely revealed in Arrival, the tepidly reviewed last installment of downloadable content for Mass Effect 2.

In Mass Effect 3, players will once again take on the role of Commander Shepard, a hardened space marine who is now on the run from his former employer, the shadowy pro-human organization Cerberus. To save Earth, he must travel the galaxy trying to rally support from alien civilizations with varying degrees of sympathy (or lack thereof).

I can't wait for ME3, and March can't come soon enough.. I also hope there will be a way to cure Thane. You hear me, Bioware?

Was upset they delayed this game. I so hope the reason isn't because they're scared of Modern Warfare 3 though. I'm sorry, I know shooters are uber popular, but a franchise like this carries a lot more weight than they do in my opinion. There are too many non-shooter fans out there and a hell of a lot of shooter fans who could wait a while to play more of the same. At the risk of being unpopular or labelled as an XBox hater here, I have to say this: implementing the use of Kinect in this game makes no sense. Nothing against Kinect, but I feel the way they are implementing it's use in the game is a waste. I am glad they didn't try to go the gimmicky route like Ubisoft are with Ghost Recon (an obvious plot to re-establish the fist explosion thing as the cool thing to do again), but at the same time for what they're using it for they could have implemented with a regular headset. If you already have a Kinect then it's probably cool to have the option, but in no way should this encourage anyone to get the Kinect.

@RadPro I would love to agree with you but I can imagine how the release of ME3 next to MW3 would hinder its sales.

I hope they don't turn it into a third person shooter and forget Mass Effect is so awesome because of choice and story consequences. Mass Effect 2 sacrificed some RPG elements for better action but it was a great balance you get the best of both worlds. Hopefully they won't tip the balance even further with Mass Effect 3 and ruin the whole thing. I am looking forward to Mass Effect 3 more than any other game.

@vambran: They delayed it to make it perfect. They don't give a **** about mw3.

@Vambran Lol, give me a break. Mass Effect has their large fanbase aching for the next installement, EA/Bioware aren't afraid of going against anyone when it comes to a release.

umm... Tom Clancy's EndWar had voice command that worked perfectly with headsets; so i don't see why do u need kinect for this?

@Kabals lol give it a rest. you can not read or watch a damn thing about mass effect without hearing that. :P

A delay from BioWare (even though I really want to play this game) can only be a good thing in my eyes. I've been a loyal BioWare-ite since Baldur's Gate, and their last few offerings have been very underwhelming to me as a whole. I really think EA is slowly pressuring the studio to produce, instead of letting them create, and polish, their games. This delay, hopefully, means someone, somewhere "gets" that rushing a game because it's popular is never a good idea, and I'm fingers crossed for Mass Effect 3 to incorporate the vastness and scope of the first, with the action-RPG mechanics and diverse level/art design of the second. PLEASE, EA, let BioWare do it right. And BioWare, I'm waiting for you to make me a believer again.

I don't understand why Kinect is necessary for voice commands, couldn't you just use a regular headset? Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 (can't remember if the first did or not) had minor integration of voice commands to AI teammates, I don't understand how this is different, except that it also lets you choose what dialogue to use in conversations.

@billthegreet. No, I'm joking that Bioware delayed Mass Effect 3, because Skyrim is coming out in November. Apparently they estimate I should be able to step away from Skyrim in 4 months. ;-)

And why can't the PC or PS3 versions support voice commands? Not like it's anything new through headsets.

Mass Effect 3 & Tomb Raider were the only high points out of that entire press event.

@zerochance79 More like give the millions that bought it something worth playing. While I agree its not that great for us hardcore or "non-casual" gamers. It sold like wildfire. And casual gamers/families use it all the time. I happen to live in a rather rich neighborhood, so I know its different here, but literally every kid here has one (by kid I mean someone under 13-14ish). The rare times the kids go out and play around here, they talk about going back inside to play kinect. I personally, don't know why anyone would spend that amount of time on one. I got one as a gift, and I've maybe played it a total of 5 hours over the course of 5 months. But ME3 will at least give it some use for me instead of just being an easy way to swap user profiles on my xbox.

It's an option. Can't really complain about such an option in a single player game. Maybe if it was multiplayer it might give some players an advantage, but it's not.

A lot of people complaining about an option. It's not like it will be required. It's just for those who want to feel more into the ME universe.

@ash162 Even I don't like Kinect, I was impressed by ME3 using Kinect but Kinect is still expensive for me.

Well this sucks. I have no desire to purchase a Kinect, so I am hoping that the rest of the game will still be good

I get the feeling you and your team will have to make some painful/emotional sacrifices.

The Kinect is actually a reasonably impressive piece of hardware. The only problem is that its unique properties have not been properly exploited by game developers yet. When I heard about Kinect, the first thing that I thought of was RTS games and virtual board games. If they properly implement finger tracking (either on the hardware or software level), Kinect actually has the potential to make a console RTS interesting and fun, with gesture and voice-based unit commands, camera movement and building placement.

is this why they delayed me:3! Because of this half hearted kinect gimmick. I thought they were making some real improvements. I m going to wait for reviews before buying this. Da: 2 was crap!!

after what the most of us who have walked in those sheperd boots have experienced at the hand of the reapers... it literally chills me to the bone to conceive their invasion in our "local cluster", let alone home turf * spoiler! * I didn't flinch making those sacrifices on the citadel. And only gazed in awe at the beast while I raised that "larvae" to ashes. but watching them appear in the skies above the very landmarks I walk past every day here at home? * shudder *...,. on a more realistic and practical note, I must admit my trepidation at Bioware implementing the Kinnect device in this final slab of the trilogy. I personally am not 100% confident in the device's stability as yet. And am naturally defensive of it's first BIG GAME use being aimed at - what is to a lot of us - our baby. The Mass effect series. that said thought, one of the great connections most of us feel to this series, is the personal touch we have been allowed to apply to our experience as "Shep". if this works out, I guess we will see that element enhanced by means of our own voice and actions. scary. exciting. Mass effect!

Ooooh, I have a great idea: Lets make this microphone and attach it to a band so you can ware it on your head. you can even add a speaker to it. It would plug right into the bottom of the game controller so the wire wont get in the way. You could talk into it for voice commands and it would come with the console already, but you could buy an extra for 20$. Think my idea would work? Its kinda crazy, obviously the 130$ kinect is the only way to talk to your console. a 2$ usb mic is definitely out of the question.

Just saw the demo of Kinect with ME3. Looks very tacked on. You can only say out loud an option on screen in a conversation rather than making your own words up and the voice commands are only used for simple squad commands. Yet another cheap attempt to sell Kinect to hardcore gamers >:( Why can't we just use a standard headset? Or even better why even have voice commands? The easiest way is to just push a button!!!

I am happy to say that Mass Effect 3 looks fantastic. For a while there it just felt like the game was getting stale, but maybe that is because I have not really played anything Mass Effect in over a year.

Hope they support voice commands for the PC release too (there's really no reason they shouldn't... I've had a mic for the longest time :)
