E3 2011: Mario Kart 3DS Impressions Preview

Nintendo shows off the 3DS version of Mario Kart for the first time since last year's show at its E3 2011 press conference.

Earlier today, during its E3 2011 press conference, Nintendo showed a brief but impressive demo for the upcoming 3DS version of Mario Kart. There were plenty of familiar faces on display, including Yoshi, Mario, Bowser, and Donkey Kong, and it wasn't immediately apparent that the game is going to offer much that's new. Some of the tracks even appeared to be recognizable from the superb Mario Kart DS with improved visuals, though Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime did mention at one point that the game is "entirely new," so perhaps portions of those tracks have been redesigned.

Features shown that were definitely new included an option to customize vehicles with different-sized wheels that will, presumably, have an impact on their handling, and courses that will see Nintendo's racers taking to the skies and diving underwater. Karts were shown sprouting hang gliders and, more exciting still, using propellers to move through the water like submarines.

The 3DS version of Mario Kart is currently scheduled for release this holiday season. We look forward to bringing you a hands-on report on the game when E3 officially opens later today.

Hopefully its not just a enhanced remake, but another separate game altogether in the series D:

If this Version of Mario Kart ACTUALLY FINALLY has a story....I'll be interested. (come on Mario kart take a hint from the PS1 classic I never get tired of playing "Crash team racing") And also I would like it if when you drive through an item box you actually have a fair chance at getting ANY of the weapons instead of usually always getting only a green or red shell. And add a few new Quirky funny weaponry to the already fun arsenal. And it should have as many Tracks as "Mario Kart Super circuit" and some of the tracks from that game too!!!

Too bad there's so much recycled material on the 3DS from earlier games at the moment.

@MarioPartier Diddy Kong Racing didn't go underwater, it just used hovercraft to go over it. And the flying was 3-D racing, this appears to merely be 2-D, though I may be mistaken.

And just how does the underwater racing and aerial racing add anything to the gameplay? It's not like you can do it at will, it just happens when the track leads you into water and ramps lead you into the air.

The idea of karts diving underwater and using gliders are things I did not expect.

It looks like the game is finally morphing into Diddy Kong Racing with the addition of aerial and water racing!
