E3 2011: Jagged Alliance: Back in Action arrives Oct. 18

Kalypso announces release date for bitComposer's remake of the 1999 original tactical role-playing game.

by

LOS ANGELES--Fans of the Jagged Alliance strategy series haven't had an update from the franchise since Jagged Alliance: Wildfire released in 2004. However, that's going to change this fall, when Jagged Alliance: Back in Action ships for the PC.

Jagged Alliance gets back in action this October.

More specifically, the tactical role-playing game will ship exclusively for the PC in North America on October 18. Previously, the game was pegged to ship at an unspecified date in 2011.

As for the game, Jagged Alliance: Back in Action is a remake of the well-received Jagged Alliance 2, which released on the PC in 1999. The game sends players to the fictional nation of Arulco, a land ruled by a ruthless dictator.

Players will join a rebel force and must free the land from the ruler's decrees. The game also sports a "plan & go" mode, which meshes real-time strategy with turn-based elements.

@jazz 28 Well if what you say is true then it might be an interesting iteration on turn based combat. We can only hope! I will wait to hear more but I want my JA fix again.

I am very excited about this game ONLY because it's another Jagged Alliance official game. But like most of the community I am disappointed that the developers ditched the Turn Based system. The positive thing from this is that there is potential, especially if the "Plan and Go" system is similar to the Combat Mission series, then it has a decent chance to be good. And let's not forget that what made JA2 so awesome was the actual characters and their personality!! Combat is one thing, and if BitComposer can make a good job as SirTech did with the Voice Acting and Characters then this game will be fun! Let's wait and see...

Just waiting for the next press release that the game is going to be a tactical fps.

@MindlessTeef Ah right. That sucks. The article I linked to was from March. Not sure if that's before or after BitComposer made their announcement. Can't be sure if Andrew Park (the guy who wrote the article) was making assumptions or was seeing it in action. I popped onto the JA:BIA forum (should ahve done it ages ago) and it's described as a "Plan and Go" system. From the descriptions given it does sound like it's turn-based in all but name. It smart pauses, you set out your actions, unpause and the action happens, pausing afterwards. The difference from standard Turn-based systems (and what I would see as a bonus) is that both the player and enemy turns happen simultaneously. Granted, that's just my take on it. I guess we'll have to wait, hope and see.

@hughobrien; sorry didn't read your comment earlier... BitComposer started a thread on their forum months ago asking us old fans to suggest how they can update JA's combat system to make it a bit more modern. Some good suggestions were made, and everyone agreed that the game MUST remain turn-based. After weeks and many pages of posts, BitComposer decided to ignore everything we said and announced that they will make the game realtime (with pause). That's we the old fans seem to be a bit... bitter. I still recieve the newsletters and as far as I know BitComposer didn't change their mind? I'll go check the forum quickly to confirm. Maybe Gamespot did the logical thing here and asumed that the new JA will be turn-based?

I still play JA2! Awesome game, all four the original titles. The JA IP passed so many hands over the years I was so excited when BitComposer actually released screenshots and it seemed like thy where planning to actually make the game... and then BitComposer announced that they would rather upset all old JA fans and bugger the game up! So I'm not interested in their real-time pause rip-off... @Ein001, agree with you there... another Silent Storm would be good!

A new Silent Storm would be better but this looks like it could be fun, though it already looks 5 years old.

FYI everyone: This "remake" ditches the "outdated" turn based combat.

Disappointing that it will not have turn-based combat, so no buy for me. Too bad, JA2 is one of my favorite games.

JA is back! Awesome new news.

At last, in a market crowded by simplified shooters for noobs comes JA. These are good news.

Hope Ivan is back. Anyone who has not played the predecessors but likes turn based combat with TONS AND TONS of characters with TONS AND TONS of character: this should be investigated!

Interesting. I only recently bought Jagged Alliance 2 from GOG.com. I'm barely into it, but it's good fun so far. I'd like to see this kind of gameplay a little more often in newer games, so I'll be keeping an eye on this, certainly.
