E3 2011: Crytek gets a Ryse out of Kinect

Crysis developer crafting Rome-set brutal action game for Xbox 360's motion-sensing add-on; release date TBA; trailer inside.

LOS ANGELES--One of Microsoft's big partner announcements during its 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo was with Crysis creator Crytek. In a brief trailer that played during its press conference this morning, Microsoft officially announced Ryse, a game that first leaked alongside Halo 4 this morning.

Ryse will be Kinect-enabled.

As seen in the trailer, Ryse appears to be set in ancient Rome. More specifically, it appears as if Ryse focuses on the fall of Rome. With Crytek developing, it should come as no surprise that the game will feature brutal, Mature-rated combat.

Notably, Ryse will be Kinect-enabled. In the trailer, a human was shown making slashing and blocking gestures to control the gritty hand-to-hand melee combat onscreen.

Unfortunately, Microsoft did not indicate when Ryse will be available. Stay tuned to GameSpot for more information on Ryse as it becomes available. For more information, check out GameSpot's first impressions of Ryse from this year's E3.

@Gelugon_baat Maybe that's because this time they're NOT messing with a PC franchise?

I strongly disagree with you Vherostar, this game looks hella fun, And if they were to add The controller, it would become an ordinary first person game, this game looks amazing, instead, buy Elder scrolls 5 Friend, that games going to be the BOMB,

From the demo it very much looks like its going to be on rails and really do you expect any different?? I agree with others on here it would be better with a controller in your hand.

Kinect is easier than others~

the only game i'd consider playing with the kinect. Will i buy a kinect system to play this? no.

I really hope they don't just have you stand in one place without moving that would make it too much like Fighter's Uncaged. Don't get me wrong I still believe you should be able to do a Kinect enabled fighting game but think along the lines of the DDR control mat. Now take away the mat and imagine where on the floor those directional arrow pads would be if it was still there. Now assign those spaces to the squares on the imaginary grid you use to configure your playspace when configuring kinect. Wallah instant invisible d-pad for making your character walk forward backward or strafe off to the side as if you are using a controller except you're using kinect

@BRUNOSWAR I hear you. Although the Kinect is responsive, I'd much rather have a controller in my hand.

Well that is a huge partnering and a big exclusive boost for Microsoft, seeing as how Sony is coming on strong with all their exclusives! This one will be interesting and I hope it isn't a full-fledged kinect title, but rather use some of the features.

This game should have the option to use the controller too. This game looks great but man i work hard at my job and would be to tired to the swinging and jumping around even on my days off ....SO make sure you guys make it with CONTROLLER options PLEASE make it where everyone is happy

If it actually plays like It's shown at the very end of the trailer - then consider bought.

@ElFlechero You and me both wonder how you move. I hope its not on the rails. I want them to think outside the box on this one.

Great a First Person Game that uses Kinect, FINALLY. Now my only question is how will they allow you to move... you know forward backward off to the side. Hopefully this won't just be on the rails.Cause I could imagine a way it could work if they're willing to go there

of the empire? That should be... Depressing and anticlimactic. Would have been cool to place it sometime around the time of the Marian reforms or Transition from the Republic to the Empire.

Please tell me I can still play this with a controller.

Ryse? I'm thinking a name change... How about Cryse?

It looks like it is exclusive to to kinect, since it says microsoft studios along with crytek. It's a shame though, anybody who's played gladiator duel with the move knows there's huge potential for an adventure fighting game with one to one sword controls. Yet it's kinect with this and the star wars game. With the kicking and head butting, this one makes sense, but the star wars one on kinect instead of move is a fail, I mean, the move controller is basically a lightsaber handle, seriously, it even has a freaking glowing ball. Anyways. This looks like it could be awesome, I wonder how you walk around, or is it an on-rails first person fighting game?

@MrDouglas Guess it depends on the contract terms - it's certainly a bit disappointing to see it proclaimed as an Xbox exclusive.

This should have been a Kinect launch title..

I was hoping that there wouldn't be a lot of Kinect, but at least this is Crytek

looks interesting. While I don't buy into motion controls, considering it's Crytek, I'm willing to give it a chance. They rarely disappoint.

I think Microsoft's emphasis on Kinect and "encouraging" developers to create games that utilize it is going to alienate gamers that prefer controllers. I can't see them making M-Rated games and shooters that only utilize the Kinect. I'm sure plenty of people will buy a Kinect action game, but only because they bought Kinect in the first place. I think the Kinect is cool, but I don't want to be standing in my living room karate chopping the air.

There will probably be a Move-enabled version for PS3 announced later. Remember the gladitorial combat in Sports Champions, can't see them (Crytek) passing up and cashing in on that opportunity.

The media have been perhaps suspiciously reticent about exclusivity for this one. This is one I'd much rather see on Move so I hope Crytek isn't going to stick with Kinect only.

XenoLair, from my impression it was a Kinect only title. Anyone else have that impression?

Is this exclusive to xbox 360 only? Games made by Crytek shouldn't be limited for to one console. My two beautiful pennies at least
