E3 2008: The Sims 3 First Look

The Sims series is returning to a PC near you, and we've got the first look.

by

Although Spore is the latest and greatest from the folks at Maxis, it wasn't too long ago that the development studio was known primarily as the creator of the incredibly popular series The Sims. Today, during EA's E3 press conference, the third game in The Sims series--the aptly named The Sims 3--was shown for the first time. Developed by EA Redwood Shores, the game is due for release some time in 2009 and will emphasize how one action affects the virtual world around you.

The trailer for the game, shown after a brief introduction, featured a playful poke at the previous games in The Sims series, which took place mostly in your own home. As the trailer opens, the lonely Sim sitting in his bathrobe and brushing his teeth on the couch suddenly discovers the outside world. Immediately, the surrounding environment comes to life in vibrant color; you watch as Sims enjoy outdoor life in the neighborhood, whether they are joggers out for a morning run or fishers out by the stream casting reels. Suddenly, a Sim celebrity of sorts appears, to the delight of squealing Sim fangirls. As the floppy-haired star busts out his guitar and begins laying it down Sim-style, word spreads and Sims come from all over to watch the show. The trailer ends with a beachside party: All the surrounding Sims have come to the beach to watch the impromptu concert.

Beyond the updated look of the Sims shown in the trailer--more detailed than in the previous games, though still inhabiting that familiar Sim style--it's sort of tough to tell how the game will play. During the presentation, EA did mention that players will have full customization over any object in the world. In addition, your Sim will have his or her own traits in the game--such as a love for cars, or a fear of commitment--and all of these traits will add up to a more dynamic world than the series has seen before. As producers put it, if something happens on one side of town, it might affect another event in an entirely different part of town, such as word spreading about the rock concert.

We expect The Sims' rich combination of a simple interface and a complex interior to once again return with The Sims 3, and we look forward to seeing how that complexity manifests itself as the game continues to come together. We'll have more information on The Sims 3 as soon as it becomes available.

i'm totally excited. though i must admit, the expansion packs with sims 2 somewhat gave me a hassle. just hope that they can incorporate all the great features one time, big time! nevertheless, i'm so looking forward to sleepless nights with the new sims release!

I have been long ready for the release of The Sims 3, it just seems as if the games get better and better with each addition. By the looks of the teaser screenshots and reviews, I've only become more enthused than before.

Bring on the Sims 3. The biggest feature I'm looking forward to in this new version is that the Sim World time passes simultaneously. So Sims can no longer age faster than their parents. It'll be fun to bounce around and see how relationships have developed while you were spending time with a different family.... And, dare I say it, make the "game" a little more challenging.

btw I agree with pink, seems like the Sims is an eternal franchise, I wouldn't be surprised if it keeps growing after I'm long dead. lol.

The new style is impressive, however I hope its even easier to make a character look exactly like how you want it than before. I've played the sims 2 and while theres OBVIOUSLY a lot of customization, most of the time you couldn't deviate a lot from the random face you got too easily. IMO.

I've been a fan of the sims ever since the first one came out in early 2000. the third one looks like it will have more depth like exploring the neighborhood and a ton of customization options on how your sim looks and acts. Lets hope it turns out great .

The game is fun and many people like it. I found it very relaxing game so if you don't like it just shut up and don't post nothing.

sims 2 was an expansion pack hell, the game itself "vanilla" was without fun or content. (read: buy many expansion packs) Furthermore it was a horrible thing to install (with all the expansion packs) and to play. (with the many long loading times).

Well i love the sims series, but they make to many expansions for one game i rather wait 2 years for a big expansion than have a new one every month, like the world is not made of money, im only gonna get the sims 3 if it has a lot of the sims 2 expansion content with it, otherwise ill just wait till like 2011.

Sure, the graphics aren't a huge upgrade, but I don't think it was meant to be. Maxis is focusing on making a new experience, living in the outside world, instead of making a prettier Sims 2. The new traits system will probably benefit from the extra time not dedicated to the graphics. As long as it plays good, it doesn't need a huge visual update anyway.

Sims 3 looks pretty awesome, but is it just me that thinks it has more of the look of a sims 2 expansion pack? there don't really seem to be any major changes - yes you can change the heights and weights, but that isn't really huge. and going anywhere in the neighbourhood, while an interesting idea, also means that sims will age even when you aren't playing with that family.

Its just too bad about it not being multiplayer, though that would defeat the purpose of the Sims. But still imagine, imagine. I wonder what Will Wright (sweet, four W's in a row) will be doing after Spore is out (I smell a new game). He barely worked on the Sims 2, and isn't working on number 3. But still bravo, maxis, bravo. They can be fat! Whoohoo! it will have a killer loading time.

The trailer looks like you can do so much more like the weight of your sims. There was a woman in the trailer that was big all over, not just the stomach, lookin forward to this game so much!!!!

i was hoping that they would add more building options like curved walls and a ceiling to make it even more realistic and lastly the ability to put more objects on a table...

twcool, they've already announced that sims will be of different heights, I believe.

I'm hoping in this version you can modify the appearance of the sims better. Like perhaps adding the ability to control height of your sim. That would be sweet.

sounds good, but didn't sims 2 sound good from the start too? As long as this game has the basics like pets included in the base game, this might be worth a buy

Agulf

What's the POINT? It won't have any of the improvements from the expansions released. Just you wait. In a few weeks there will be a Sims 3 Pets released.

God.... does this mean I'll have to upgrade my computer again? (and therefore make this the most expensive game of my life)!!!

Sims has always been an interesting game. I just wish they wouldn't throw out so many Expansions. That's a lot of money to spend. Oh well better get busy playing Sims 2 so I can get as much time out of it as possible before this one drops. Still a lot of expansion content I haven't seen yet. Hopefully there will be more Sim customization. Like in depth body customization for example. Also I always thought that the body and the clothes should be two separate meshes laying on top of each other and not together. Cause it can be a real pain when creating user content. This game should be fun. And the graphics look great.

Well as it gets close to release, I really hope they release a Sims 2 complete collection. I've been holding off so I could have all the expansions, just like I did for the original Sims. The Sims 3 looks interesting though. I hope they don't change the core mechanics of the gameplay too much, as in completely change the formula.

I seriously hope they can find a way to milk it like the last one. Oh right, this is EA... they've got it all planned out for the next decade.

Nesrie

Love the Sims, hate EA with their new DRM scheme. Gonna have to pass until they stop get their act together and stop punishing their paying customers and having very little affect on the pirates.

They need to focus more on the community options. I am glad that Maxis is finally going to allow players to control the entire neighbourhood simultaneously,so we won't have to come across some serious flaws in Sims 2's design. Other than that, focus on details and customisation can only mean good for this game.

BRINCA

After This they either have to make a machine that copies you EXACTLY how you are into the game or just make expansion packs for this game and thats it.
