E3 2008: Fallout 3 Microsoft Conference Impressions

We take on the Enclave in this look at Fallout 3 at Microsoft's E3 press event.

Fallout 3 was the first cab off the rank at Microsoft's E3 press conference today, with the big news being that Bethesda is planning some future downloadable content for both the Xbox 360 and PC versions of the game. No further details were unveiled about what form that content may take, but it was confirmed that it would be exclusive to Xbox Live.

As for gameplay, Bethesda showed a new locale and some new weapons in its postapocalyptic action role-playing game, and all of the action was showcased in a ruined Washington DC (all set to a chirpy version of "Yankee Doodle Dandy"). The demo began with the character making his way past some dilapidated buildings, after which he pulled out a sniper rifle to scope out the territory in front. After spotting some raiders camped behind a car, the Bethesda rep playing the game switched to Fallout 3's VATS targeting system, aiming at the skull of one unsuspecting enemy. For the uninitiated, Fallout 3's VATS system is a way of targeting specific body parts on enemies, in which onscreen indicators show the percentage chance of a likely hit (depending on your character's attributes and weapons). Firing the rifle triggered the VATS system's slow-motion cinematic mode, and the raider's head exploded in a burst of bloody pulp as the bullet impacted. The player then switched to a shotgun to dispense with the other raiders, who had streamed from behind their vehicle hideout. One raider decided to take cover on a small bridge, at which point the Bethesda rep pulled out the in-game character's laser rifle, taking only two shots to completely vaporize the camping raider.

Once past the bridge, a huge Enclave helicopter appeared, dropping off a few soldiers several hundred meters in front. Instead of duking it out with conventional weapons, the Bethesda rep pulled out a missile launcher to deal with the situation. After softening up the Enclave soldiers with a couple of rounds, the character then switched to Fallout 3's BFG variant, the Fat Boy portable nuke launcher. The Bethesda rep aimed directly at one soldier's chest using the VATS system, and the slow-mo cinematic tracked the mininuke's curving path as it descended. We've seen the Fat Boy before, but it's still cool to see the small mushroom cloud that it leaves behind as it explodes.

Finally, the Bethesda rep playing the game confirmed that it would have plenty of single-player content, boasting of more than 100 hours of playtime. Fallout 3 ships this October on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

People, you are looking at the hype and judging the game on that.... Baldurs gate didn't look like it would live up to its pregame hype, Fallout 1 was panned before its release - Oblivion was much better than thought to be... Let at least the demo come out. No, Fallout 3 isn't going to be the gamer's pancea, holy grail. But it will be a good game - with looks like over 100 hours of content on the single player - and good graphics. As a fallout fanboy (and fallout 2 and even fallout tactics - but not as much) I am sure it won't be the end all I hope for... - but I have gone back and played fallout 1 and 2 and they aren't as good as I remember them... - still awesome, but memory is often better than reality. I hate Microsoft and its games, I ain't too happy with Bethesda and some of its Elderscrolls stuff, but they are still good solid game makers. This will be a very good game - awesome will have to wait until the playthrough. Send us a demo - that's what will sell us and get the hype!

looks like a merge between bioshock, fable 2, oblivion, stalker and resident evil 4. Don't get me wrong though, I can't wait to try this.

I dont know guys really. The new Fallout 3 game seems promising, and it certainly will deliver many hours of tireless fun, entertaining gaming experience. I am sure Fallout 3 has its own magic, and much to offer to a gamer, but aside to all that, aside to all of its promising new age flashy graphics, and all kind of destructive appearing gadgets, somehow, I am disappointed, with the whole impression, with the whole setting, with the total work done in the game. It mutated way too much, so much that it vaguely reminds of what used to be Fallout. It seems like this is yet another shootemup game, and there is nothing wrong with that, todays games are very excellent, two-three leagues above when compared five years ago. But all together, I personally, am expecting a true legend to return, to illuminate our perception, to leave that very familiar feeling of the unique, and which makes that very special feeling in our minds, and hearts, and which I do not believe Fallout 3 will be able to give based only on some familiar intro animations, which are in my opinion perhaps half-done as well.

Didn't appeal to me that much before what I've seen at the e3 this far and now still doesn't but I will keep track of progress. Interest woken.

I cant wait, I have been waiting ten years since fallout 2. If it has any aspect of fallout 2 in this game so far as role playing this game will, again, create another following!

What's the point of comparing this great game to Oblivion just because it's from the same company? Play it first then make a fair comparison.

I thought it was immensely boring, actually... I know that they have to show off the VATs system, but it seemed like that guy had never played a FPS before.

I was really, really looking forward to this game and had been since the day I finished Fallout 2 but to be completely honest, it looks incredibly lame.

I'll stick to Oblivion. Fallout 3 appears to rely too much on gore and corny cliches.

This game looks cool. Its more for me because i like guns rather than the swords of oblivion. I can see myself just living in the city and surviving that just seems like fun. Cant wait to get it now i just need 60 bucks... taking donations...lol

I agree with Slay3r7023, this is gonna be the best game ever. I've spent over 300 hours of my life on Oblivion and I expect Fallout 3 to be the next game I spend sickening amounts of time playing.

Actually, Ronnet, you're wrong. The PS magazine preview mentioned that you can build all manner of home-made weapons with equipment you find lying around including rifles, pistols, shotguns, shivs, grenade launchers, and I think lasers if I'm not mistaken. Anyway, I don't know where you heard you can't make your own weapons. You can. End of story. I'll bet on that, if you care to wager, because it's simply just true.

ronnet

'' It revealed that you can make your own weapons'' thats not true, the G4 guy made it sound like that. Todd said, yes THIS one you can make. So its probably just a quest that lets you make one fun weapon. This is how people get disappointed.

All of you should watch the extended demo on G4. It revealed that you can make your own weapons. The Bethesda Rep had a rocket launcher made out of a wood chipper and a leaf blower. Any useless junk you pick up can be fired from it. He then loaded it with a lunchbox and ten stuffed animals and fired in normal time at the raider on the bridge, she just cowered in fear as the first two teddy bears missed the mark. Finally, he went into V.A.T.S. and shot the raider 3 times in the chest with the teddy bears of DOOM. The raider exploded into a bloody mess. If that alone doesn't make you love this game, then you'll never like it.

Holy ****, I am pre-ordering this game the first chance that i get. I used up hours of my life in oblivion and plan to do the same with this game. The Nuke launcher is so bad *** that i cant believe it. Cant wait until October. Bethesda is the best.

Just hope it's going to be fleshed out more than Oblivion. Really hated that empty canvas feel, and rehashing the same **** over and over again. It got stale quick. I just hope Bethesda learned their lesson.
