E3 '07: Super Mario Galaxy Hands-On Impressions

We got starstruck by a new playable level of Super Mario Galaxy at E3 07.

The virtual stars always align for E3, and one of the brightest is Mario, the mustachioed plumber extraordinaire. But not all is right in the skies above Mario Land. A certain lovely lady has gone missing, and a new menace has wrecked the cosmos. While we don't know how the story will unfold, we got a brief hands-on taste of what will be in the stars and stores for you when this game ships on the 12th of November.

Early on you'll find yourself talking to a rabbit on a small planetoid. He's quite rascally, and before zipping away he challenges you to capture him and his friends. As you begin your search, you'll notice the same jumping mechanics from Mario 64, including the timed triple-jump (yip-yahoo-yoweeee!) and the long jump. The long jump is particularly cool, especially on this small starter planet, because you can literally launch yourself into orbit and travel halfway around the world in one jump.

As you explore the world searching for rabbits, you'll notice landmarks like a warp tunnel, a black crater, and a dense thicket. As you dive into each one, you'll flush out a varmint, and then the chase is on. If you recall the rabbit chase in Mario 64, this is very similar. These rabbits are slightly slower than Mario when he's built up a full head of steam, but they corner devilishly.

On top of that, if you chase the critter down to the underside of the world, you'll find yourself chasing him upside down, with reversed controls! It's definitely disorienting in a fun, topsy-turvy sort of way.

After catching the bunnies, you'll gain a spin-punch attack that can be executed by simply shaking the remote back and forth, which will smash crystals and bash enemies. It's not the only weapon in your arsenal, however, especially if there's a second player on hand. In any game of Super Mario Galaxy, a second player can join in any time and take control of what appears to be a small shooting star to help you grab power-ups, or stun enemies for an easier butt-stomp. It's an interesting take on cooperative play.

Shortly after you master the spin-punch, you'll be able to jump from planet to planet on big, star-shaped launch pads, or float from place to place by targeting small networks of blue stars. The worlds may be small, but the levels promise to be huge. Cosmic, even.

While it's too early to say whether or not Super Mario Galaxy will completely outshine the competition this holiday season, we have a feeling that Mario's looming journey across the universe will pleasantly change your world this November.

"Bioshock already swallowed this game. Bioshock = new, Mario = 20 years old and BORING." Not to be rude, but the game hasn't even come out yet. It could surpass OoT for all we know. Plus, Final Fantasy is 20 years old, and people still found that amazing even though it uses the same battle system, items magic, and a re-used idea for a lot of the stories(the crystals) for many of them(I-V, IX for the crystals, I-X for the others). Wait until it comes out to judge it. I love Bioshock, but they're 2 different catagories. It's like comparing Metal Gear to Tales of Symphonia. Not trying to be rude , just saying.

This game is going to be crazy, hopefully a successor to Super Mario 64. This game is going to sell really quick, and with a pretty cool co op, we're all going to be expecting a lot

Why is it that everything on the Wii is bite-sized? With the exception of a few games (Zelda, Metroid...) games on the Wii have been mini-game collections. From the looks of it (and i'm not doubting the Big N) Mario is adding up to be on the borderline of miniturization. Tons of mini-worlds...great! This one you get to play the "catch the rabbits" mini-game, that one you get to find the stars, that one over there you get to defeat the giant chain-chomp. Give me more games on a large scale! I bought my Wii starry-eyed and hopeful that it'll kick ass, but now it seems that Metroid 'n' SSB are the only things keeping the hope alive.

"oh another thing "schitzonix", if that is your real name" So your real name must be "Huggy Bear"?... Great way to start a streaming pile of make belief. If it makes you feel better to think that I'm an overweight loser with no life (lol), then go right ahead. BTW such assumptions are only based on your own experience. So I'm guessing you're very fat and cant get laid?... Personally I think I nailed it. Thanks Nietzsche.

**** i don't even own a wii, yet i consider it a perfect equal to MY x360, neither is better, the wii IS behind on graphics but, the x360 seems to have sacrificed fun/gameplay for graphics (the one exeption is Gears Of War, awsome btw) oh yeah and use your HUGE iQ to tell me one good microsoft first party game... oops, there arem't any there goes your arguement, WANKER!

you sure seem wanting to make love to the other "stronger systems!" though dude no one cares about your thoughts and by way the only idoit as i can see here is you....oh and chrisp keep up the good work.

Are you emotionally attached to a corporation?... Please say it isn't so. It's a piece of hardware and I'm commenting on it. It has nothing to do with brand names. I OWN a Wii, I dont know how many times I have to type that. The problem is that it seems impossible for you to grasp the concept of someone actually owning a Wii and criticizing it at the same time. Because apparently there should be some sort of seudo-erot1c bond between me and my console?... thats pretty effin sick and thats the vibe that I'm getting from your blindfolded, generic answers to my criticism. Try to drill it into your little fanboy skull: I own a Wii and I am NOT PLEASED. I am here because I am LOOKING FORWARD TO GALAXY... BUT I am very uneased by the fact that Nintendo's first party titles have been going down in quality and creativity since the Gamecube (Mario Sunshine anyone??). Even further, and despite your generic "wow look at how many systems have been sold!" answer, that doesn't help the fact that as an owner of a Wii, and as a hardcore gamer, I am terribly dissapointed with whats out there and, after E3, also with whats coming. It doesn't Take me 3 posts to collect my thoughts. It takes me 3 posts to make your low IQ absorb my points without spinning into idiocy. Make this 4 and counting.

chrisp1
chrisp1

you're right. it is dated hardware and repetitious software. i guess the fact that it is so close to outselling x360 in total sales despite the 1 year lead means that about 10 million people out there regret their purchase. if you were even partly capable of an intelligent response you would be able to collect your thoughts in one post not three (or god forbid use the edit function). as far as your posts demonstrate, you're anti-nintendo. so please, like i said before, just go away.

schitzonix
schitzonix

Never in any previous console war was there such a MASSIVE gap between the system hardware. The Wii is horribly outdated in that respect and that makes this unique. This time around the hardware WILL effect the gameplay because its just so backwards and because 3rd parties will avoid it. It will also be the first time in console war history that the top selling console gets the least 3rd party support BY FAR.

weathertrooper
weathertrooper

All of you who are bashing Nintendo, craving "new" content... don't demand innovation, then rush out August 14th to buy Madden 08. If ANY game were ever too repititious, it's the entire Madden series. But some will buy it, because of online or whatever else. Also, people play Final Fantasy games, which use all the same items, magic spells, etc in every game (it's not a bad thing, though). It's a game, a damn game. Play it if you want, or leave it. If you don't play, there's always someone who will. Always. No better system, only games.

schitzonix
schitzonix

Oh really?, Twilight Princess, which I own btw, is fresh material to you?... YAWN.......... Its the same on the Gamecube by the way. I work in advertisement and have an MA degree at it. I believe that makes me quite knowledgable on the subject. Do you even know what "dumping" is? Ps3?, thats the ONLY system I don't own. Learn to read before you spit out your fanboy nonsense. I was here to read the Galaxy preview like anyone else. Just like Twilight Princess I WILL play it, finish it, then tell you it sucked. Because thats what a jaded gamer that has owned every console you can imagine does. Next.

chrisp1
chrisp1

schitzonix: i usually don't post because of idiots like you. not really worth my time, but since im trying to avoid work here goes. I don't know if you've actually been awake while playing any recent nintendo games but some of them (i.e. Twilight Princess) are the most fun i've ever had playing any game across any platform. Maybe you're bitter your ps3 didn't deliver as you expected. perhaps you just can't enjoy things like normal people. even harder to understand is why someone who tries to be educated about their opinion is in the Wii section of the site talking trash about the wii. just go away. And regarding your little cash muscle comment...i don't think you understand the market very well. ill leave it at that.

schitzonix

"ps3 sucks all it does is focus on graphics and no gameplay" Just think of all the push ups you'll be doing with Wii Fitness!... And remember, its their flagship product! ALL about the fun amirite?

schitzonix
schitzonix

"schitzonix, Fo the thousandth time, the WII DOESN'T GIVE A RAT'S ASS about graphics. You say it's 2007 and there's no excuse for these graphics. There's plenty of excuse. Wii focuses on the fun factor. While Uncle Bill and Phil Aimes spend countless dollars on making games realistic and beautiful, Nintendo wonders "How can I make this game more fun?" Oh, don't worry, I own a Wii, 360 and a 6 month old Alienware PC with dual 8800's. I'm sorry I don't realize what "fun" is!... I totally forgot that "fun" is about playing the SAME GAMES with the SAME TIRED CONCEPTS. It's not too hard to understand, drill this into your skull: ITS THE SAME DAMN MARIO, ZELDA, MARIO KART AND METROID GAME over and over and over and over again. In case you were born yesterday and fail to realize this, Nintendo ran out of fresh ideas A LONG TIME AGO. In that same timespan they have also been bullied (lets call it for what it is) by bigger companies with enough cash muscle to outclass Nintendo more and more with every new generation. With that in mind, the Wii was a smart move by Nintendo as it stopped trying to compete for the hardcore gaming, more adult market and made a system that appeals to a completely different (and equallly large) consumer market: The non-gamer and the super casual gamer. In that respect it is a success, but don't even bother comparing it to the PS3 or 360 at ANYTHING (3rd party support, media center support, online support with downloadables, new content, communities, tournaments etc etc etc). It is absolutely foolish to compare a REAL next generation system to the Wii. The Wii stands alone in its own niche market.

schitzonix

"give it a couple years, TOP NOTCH GFX WII on the way! lol" So you mean that somehow its going to transform from a gamecube to a next gen system? God, fanboys make my day.

I am pretty pumped about this game, we need another long game, I've beat Zelda and Paper Mario, and those are 2 of the greatest games I've ever played, but we need more, and SMG looks to be the perfect game to fit that need. While I AM excited about this game, I'm not nearly as excited as I am for the game on my icon! December 3rd, hurry up!

Man i hate nintendo fanboys. First off, We know the Wii offers awesome interativity and all that jazz, but then your like "lol teh ps3 and 360 r suxorz cause they all about grphix and no gameplay ROFL". I like the Wii, i really do. I have one, and a PS3. though i do love the 360, i play it at my friends all the time, but ive been playing my ps3 waaay more than my wii, cause right now, there are way better games. Now i am stoked for Mario galaxy and metroid, and they don't look half bad, but I still like decent graphics. But the games that are on the wii are stuff like...cooking mama and a bunch of mini games. Other than my launch games, i haven;t bought a single other game for my wii, that is of course until metroid and galaxies come out. So don;t be dissing other consoles cause your precious "reginator" or whatever gay name you give him doesnt make it.

LONG LIVE THE REVOLUTION!!!

to be honest i reckon with good game designers the wii could push out some seriously nice graphics. if any of you looked at the specs of the wii and laughed at the 64mb [or something like that] gpu well its not bad at all at 480p, i play games at 1280x1024 or something on my 64mb intergrated gpu on my pc and they run ok. but the wiis gpu is dedicated gpu and is made by ati, it has nearly all the fancy stuff, like bloom effect, all your hdr but only plays them at 480p [640x480] you only need 256mb cards when your pumping out 720p or 1080p resolutions and extreme gaming. anyways the wii was built with fun in mind and it is fun. i am not a fanboy, i have a wii and a 360 and love them both, although you could say i dont really like the ps3, its way too overated and so far even gamespot says the xbox 360 is still winning for graphics so far. anyway, this game looks great so far, lets hope nintendo don't muck it up.
