E3 '07: Gears of War Impressions

Microsoft announces that it's bringing Gears of War to the PC, and Epic's Cliffy B shows off an exclusive boss encounter with the mighty Brumak.

Though there were rumors and rumblings of Epic's top-selling Xbox 360 shooter Gears of War coming to the PC, Microsoft made it official during its E3 2007 press conference. While Microsoft's Shane Kim started things off by announcing that the game would ship with a game editor and some original content, it wasn't until Epic lead Cliff Bleszinski took the stage to provide a live demo of Gears of War in action on the PC that things really started to heat up.

His first order of business was to showcase the Windows Live support in Gears of War, which he did by inviting his buddy Rod for a little co-op action. While waiting to sync up, Bleszinski touched on a few of the specifics of what will set the PC version of Gears apart from its Xbox 360 counterpart, citing five new single-player chapters, a new multiplayer mode, and several new multiplayer arenas. Once Rod got connected, taking the role of Gears second-banana Dominic Santiago, Bleszinski went on to show a boss fight with the massive Brumak, an enemy that many a Gears fan had lamented never getting to fight head-on in the original Xbox 360 release of the game.

As you'd expect from a Gears of War boss fight--especially against a towering monster equipped with two massive arm-mounted weapons, as well as an even more intimidating piece of firepower on its head--the action was fast-paced and brutal. The main tactics included circle-strafing the vicious Brumak and taking cover whenever possible, though Dom did have to be revived on one occasion. It's worth noting that Bleszinski played the brief demo with an Xbox 360 controller and thus employed techniques that should be familiar to veterans of the original game. (No comment on mouse-and-keyboard support was made.) Both fighters focused their fire on each of the Brumak's arm-mounted weapons, eventually taking them out of commission before focusing on its head. Just when it seemed like Marcus and Dom had this brute up against the ropes, Bleszinski ended the demo, explaining that he didn't want to ruin the end of the fight, and encouraging people to see it for themselves when Gears of War comes to Windows XP and Windows Vista.

From this short demo, we definitely got the impression that Gears on the PC will look better than its Xbox 360 counterpart, given its noticeably smoother frame rate and seemingly higher texture detail. However, Cliffy mentioned that the game would run on Windows XP as well as Windows Vista, which made us wonder if the game will support DirectX 10. Either way, we look forward to seeing more of Gears of War on the PC.

Hmm... I wonder if they'll do the same thing that they did with Shadowrun and make the online PC compatable with 360s LIVE. If so, I'd buy Gears Of War as soon as I got a better PC...

Ha well, gotta love it, The great game Gears of war comes back home to the PC, and all i can here are the 360 lovers, complaining about how this should be given to them, and how it was to short, and how pc get to fight the boss that they couldn't have. Please, do your selves a favour, go out and get a decent PC, and stop kidding your self with a console. They already said its gong to be shipping with a editor, so regardless what YOU get, PC get the chance to make what they like, IE: new weapons, New chapters, new Multiplayer levels. As for someone saying "i think this will lag on a DX9 system" i highly doubt it, seeming as a PC can stomp over a 360, even while running a OS in the back ground. if it runs shoit on your puter, time to upgrade and stop being a cheap arse! *please note there are some deliberate spelling mistakes in this post*

kill_switch: 5 chapters = 1 act And I really, really hope that we Xbox 360 players get that new content. On a side note, being that it's for both XP and Vista, it sure beats Halo 2! :p

5 new chapters? damn thats the length of the 360 version. i just hope they release the new content for the 360 version, through marketplace,or a expansion disc or something,i think they will release the new multi player mode in an update soon after it comes out on the PC and then maybe a few months down the line start releasing the extra chapters, that or put them into the 360 version of gears 2, either way i see all this content coming to the 360,and for a price, as much as i love Microsoft,i don't see them missing out on this chance to make a fair bit of money/

I'm really glad not being able to get the 360 GoW when I wanted it.

Wow.... 5 new chapters (making the game longer), more multiplayer areas to fight in, a whole new mode, and a boss fight with the one monster every Gears fan wanted to fight but only got to see a brief glimpse of. 360 owner over here feeling very bent over and screwed by Epic. At least give me some lube next time.

"PC based engine that can port to xbox 360 and ps3", by port I meant that it starts on the PC and can work on the other platforms, so yep epic developes for the PC too. I agree with the gameplay issue though, sometimes console ports don't feel so good with the keyboard and mouse, hope they took that year since the xbox release to make it comfortable for the usual PC controls

This is a joke. Microsoft claims they support Windows, and look what they have done. Gears of War was developed on, and originally intended to be released on the PC, and now they realease it one year after they release its port. And a new boss? This is just another joke to force XBOX360 fans buy the PC version as well. Mass Effect is just another joke. And hopefully, we will be seeing more of these jokes in the future. Microsoft. Where do you want to go today?

Who didn´t expect Gear of War to come to the PC? Still that boss fighting option looks sweet. That dude in the demo looked awsome! But how will you play it? Mouse and Keyboard or X360 controller?

finally Microsoft is making some sense. with all these new VGA's in the market and people dying to buy them, it's not wise to abandon the PC gaming world.

@YourOldFriend: ftw, i was going to post everything you already posted. This is awesome, i was so close to buying a 360 to play gears, it does look really good from what i have read on gamespot (esp on PC!). Maybe they can also port Dead Rising?

Shows how much you know about your PC. Rigges also forgot to mention that Epic develops for PC also, not just for 360. I agree with rigges otherwise though.

hmmm, weird comments here. UT3 is used for Gears of War which is a PC based engine that can port to xbox 360 and ps3, which means this game will most likely run no problem on a decent dx9.0c pc (considering UT3 engine is build on dx9) For the microsoft comment, and xbox is basically a PC in a box, same basic parts just tighter together so it runs smoother. Microsoft run the PC market to a large extent since they invented dx9 and dx10 and well dx anything, hence for them to stay out of pc's business we'll lose windows, dx9 and 10 and the ability to play any modern day game on the pc except anything coded in Open GL (so John Carmac would be happy, doom 3, Quake 4 and the Tech 5 engine would still run on linux, OSX etc). Great games to PC, great news, another reason not to buy a console.

that is amazing news. i have no idea how pcs with dx9 can run this without lag, or low textures

Microsoft should deal with it's Xbox and stay the hell out of PC's business. No mouse and keyboard, no buy. I do not play Xbox, Playstation, etc......not interested, don't care to hear about. PC alfa and omega!

bill900, microsoft have no say atall in the pc version of gears, the game is made by epic, not microsoft.

cool---and the extra content should stay on pc only-----AND CLIFFY B.....IF YA HERE ME...GIVE US PC GAMERS THE FULL UNCENSORED CHAINSAW, THAT MICROSOFT WOULDNT ALLOW YOU TO PUT ON THE 360---we are all dying to see it------damn, did you see the look on cliffy b's face when that microsoft exec told him it was to graphic!. he looked devastated..but good news cliffy, dont think microsoft will give s$%t if you wanna put it in the pc version---and neither will we

Its not surprising that this is coming to PC, It was a hit game and they want to max out their profits. I love the 360 version but it was too short and would have benefited greatly from this extra content. An ultimate 360 edition with this new content would be very tempting but I doubt it will happen.

Green_Spike

with any luck microsoft will allow the same new content on PC to be DC on the Xbox 360.

Looks like Microsoft learned from their mistake with Halo 2 and are making this available for XP as well as Vista. The article however mentions nothing about mouse and keyboard support, and if they don't include that I certainly won't buy it.

I hope this turns out good as a port because Resident Evil 4 did not.

@Yan1978 Lol, why would you play splitscreen on a monitor?! That's what free internet play is for silly. You say you're an ex-pc gamer, but you don't know about internet play? You must have been a pcgamer pre-Doom. This looks very solid, although it's kinda of a bummer that exclusives are going the way of the dinosaur. And to whoever said it before, I'd bet $100 that GTA4 will come to PC, there's no way it will remain an exclusive. Since this is the only 360 game I wanted, I'm perfectly satisfied now. Co-op and new content ftw :)

Toron4ever
Toron4ever

GOW devs should fix the online part of gears. Its like a drug even though it makes you so sick of to many things like lags and not balance gameplay online (host advantage and dont have the same amount of effect to shoot down other players not to mention da glitches) you just want to play it. This version look more amazing though than the xbox360. Well hopefully the extra content should be available for free and for GOW going to PC not 360 exclusive anymore. PC is like a 360 it got microsoft all over it and its a computer not a console and with xbox live anywhere PC and 360 owners can play online with each other. All I can say is stop comparing and just enjoy wat u have. Peace.

Yan1978
Yan1978

GOW looks sweet on my 50" Plasma, to run this on a decent sized widescreen 22" monitor with details maxed i would need a 8800gt, which by itself costs more than a 360, and i wont be playing split screen with friends on a 22". The graphic overhaul doesn't bother me, but the extra chapters should be available for download. BTW this is coming from an EX hardcore PC gamer who swore by mouse and keyboard, now i just love the 360 controller with rumble.

@@@nick1928 Its funny that 360 owners are always making such a big deal out of PS3 losing exclusives and saying thats its better for the community as a whole, but when its one of their exclusives.....

completley revamped with mroe stuff on the PC version... i dunno about any other 360 owners but this kind of pisses me off.

I wonder if this title will be compelling enough to pull xbox 360 owners of gears of war to buy the game again for the pc

ah xp. a good choice, especially since its shipping out by the end of this year. meaning the majority of us can actually play it. unlike halo 2...

@Vinnie Biffy already said that there would be downloadable chapters to xbox360(its on his gamespot interview) my guess would be that they release totaly different chapters to xbox then the pc, reason is because im pretty certain most ppl who own a next gen console already have a nice spec pc so would be no point releasing exactly the same stuff on both formats. Me personally im not too botherd because i having completed gears about 5 times i know the story and how it ends, a boss fight wont make me rush out and buy for my pc. As for the future looks bleak for 360 suggest you actually watch the conference and see the 40+ titles that are coming BEFORE 08 inc the 100% exclusive to 360 gta4 chapters, if anything the pressure is now on sony to do a good show as there curremtly being trounced by 360.
