E3 '07: Civ IV enters Golden age

Gold Edition of Sid Meier's popular turn-based strategy game to include original, Warlords expansion, extras.

SANTA MONICA, Calif.--Set for release July 23, Civilization IV: Beyond the Sword will expand Sid Meier's epic-scale world-conquest sim for the second time. Focused on adding to the post-gunpowder age, Beyond the Sword will add 12 scenarios, 10 factions, and 16 leaders to the game. To provide gamers a few days to reacquaint themselves with the spectacularly reviewed original, Take-Two announced today it will precede the expansion's release with the Civilization IV: Gold Edition.

Aside from the original Civ IV and its first expansion, Warlords, the Gold Edition will sweeten the deal with a few extras. Included in the package will be a behind-the-scenes DVD featuring developer interviews and an overview of Sid Meier's work.

Two posters will also be bundled in. The first is created by Greg Hildebrandt, famous for various movie-themed posters, including for the original Star Wars and recent Lord of the Rings films. A bit more mundane but far more useful, the second maps out Civ IV's extensive tech tree, detailing which technologies are needed to advance players' societies.

Civilization IV: Gold Edition will ship to retail on July 17 for the PC. It has been rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older but has not yet been priced. Check out GameSpot's previous coverage of Civilization IV and Civilization IV: Warlords.

And of course this couldn't wait until AFTER Beyond the Sword comes out...

If i could get a single dvd with Civ4 (with all updates) + warlords (with all updates) + beyond the sword, AND INSTALL IT ALL IN A ROW (as if with a single game) - THAT's what i would buy. What gold edition is, is stuff i already have, wrapped in cardboard. Why pay for that?

I don't see how the tech tree poster would be useful if you're planning to get BTS immediately after. They made quite a bit of changes. Oh, and Sdes, you don't need to get this. Just get the BTS expansion. People who buy this would need to buy BTS as well since it doesn't come with it.

Well, I bought the pack with all 4 Civs, but without Warlords. So, I doubt I will get this. Why couldn't they just Wait until Beyond the Sword was released and put that in there?

If you've already got the game, you shouldn't worry too much. For an extra behind-the-scenes DVD, it hardly seems worth getting.

Cool, but I have the game already

I'll probably get this...I haven't played civ for a minute now but the scenarios alone will eat up 20+ hours of time; you can't get more bang for your buck than from a civ game

IDK if I will buy it since I already have civ 4 and warlords

How frustrating can PC gaming get? I got the Civ IV: Game of the Year Edition a couple of months back, and now, to my chagrin, here comes another edition, which is arguably better (the Warlords expansion isn't that worthwhile) and possibly for the same price, or just a bit more (perhaps $59.99)... They should give us the option of downloading a patch for a nominal fee that has all the extra/new stuff, instead of "motivating" us to get these unrelenting re-releases...

And then there will a platinum, diamond, and titanium edition....... the repackaging continues. I'll wait till the one with all the packs.
