E3 06: THQ embarks on Dark Crusade

Second Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War expansion gets a name; second new race revealed as the undead Necrons.

THQ today shed some more light on Dark Crusade, the next expansion to its 2004 PC real-time strategy game Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. In addition to the new subtitle, the publisher announced the second new race for the game. Joining the technologically minded Tau in the grim darkness of the future will be the soulless Necrons, an army of undead warriors hungry for the living after a 60-million-year slumber.

In addition to a pair of new races (bringing the game's total to seven playable factions), developer Relic Entertainment is including a new single-player campaign in the game that will challenge players to take command of the race of their choice and exterminate all opposing forces. THQ is also promising to expand the multiplayer gameplay, though it didn't give specifics on how.

Dark Crusade is currently slated for a fall release. THQ has indicated that the game will be at its Electronic Entertainment Expo booth next week, but you won't have to wait that long for new info on the title. For more on Dark Crusade, check out GameSpot's new first-look preview of the expansion.

Looks to be a good game all 7 races with a campaign, glad necrons not my favourite to slow and limited to infantry aside the monolith HQ building. Greater preference to Eldar though rather frail in combat their really good stuff is amazing, warpspiders + fireprisms = winning combination if handled well

well someone said that you just need tyranids and it will be complete.....what about....Dark Eldar? Daemonhunters? Witch Hunters? You fight necrons in WH40K: WA anyway.......It was obvious it was gonna be them, same with Imperial Guard. I agree with Surge_Butcher, RTS games to not belong on a console......apart from C&C for PSX...that was a good game :D

Huh. Necrons. Didn't see that one coming. I mean, sure, theyre my fav but they dont exactly have the widest selection.. The only real "tank", unless you count destroyers, is the Monolith. I'm rather worried about MP balancing though... (with We'll Be Back!! and all....) I also hope they speed them up a little because if i was in a multiplayer game and i sent the force to the enemy's base and he found out he could have his troops at my base before i was half there, provided he doesn't meet me in battle, which will likely be unwise... Hard to tell though because when you read the codex for the Necrons, by the sound of it, their Gauss weaponry is an instant kill. I dont think the Tau will be as hard to balance. And to the people who said stuff about the games coming out on console: Idiots! HAve you any idea how hard it can be to play RTS games on a console?!?! Yaaaagh! Pardon my getting carried away.

This is the reason why you do not buy a PS3 or 360. They are too expensive and are limited to the base console. DOW will never to come to consoles nor will any 40K game. Fire Warrior assured that. Besides, most people who play 40K own a computer good enough to play DOW by now. The base game does not require much and any 2 or 3 year old computer can handle it (most of the time). If you want this game, you will have to buy a computer instead of whining about ports.

why port it to a console. If they did you would buy it and find it impossible to paly. Believe it or not RTSs are easier to play on a computer then console

About time my favorite race, the Tau got in this game. I'm happy they announce this finally, unlike Blizzard who are still being jerks with their "secret" race BS. I'm so happpy to find this info, can't wait to read up more.

A port to the 360 or the PS3 really wouldn't have to be "dumbed down" in any way, if the developers utilized the HDDs. Before the Xbox made HDD use in a console a mainstream thing, yes, they had an excuse, but now, they don't. If they choose to chop up a game and forsake the HDD, that's their own fault for crapping on their creation when they could represent it faithfully.

Just release it on the PS3, and this game will be booming.

BlackiceJoe: "Would love to see this game coing to the 360 or PS3." Why? They would have to dumb it down like all strategy ports.

They were doing a Warhammer online MMORPG but it fell through. I'd love to see a 40K RPG or MMO game

yeah, i kinda wanted to see the tyranids too, they aren't even my favorite, but i just like seeing them in action, but i heard from somewhere that relic isn't going to put the tyranids in, because the way they are played just isn't possible on a computer, which really defeats the purpose of putting them in.

yay. this sounds like it will be awesome. all said and done, they are going to have a bunch of 40k races in there by the time they finish making expansions it sounds like. I look forward to this.
