E3 06: SOCOM reinforcements en route

Developer announces sequels to Navy SEALs games; Combined Assault raids PS2s, Fireteam Bravo 2 scorches PSPs.

The latest SOCOM games may have been waging war for only about six months, but there has already been talk about the franchise's next campaigns.

In April, a product page on EBgames.com listed a SKU for a sequel to the PlayStation 2 edition of the military sim, to be called "SOCOM US Navy Seals Combined Assault." The page went on to discuss more integration with a sequel to the PlayStation Portable SOCOM series, titled SOCOM: US Navy SEALs Fireteam Bravo 2.

Sony kept quiet on the matter, and the page quickly went AWOL, leaving SOCOM fans wondering if the page was just a SNAFU on EB's part. As it turns out, the EB intel was spot on.

Games don't get much more official than when they are revealed directly from the developers themselves, and that's exactly what has happened on the official SOCOM Web site. A post by developer Zipper Interactive confirms what EBgames.com leaked and adds more details.

Combined Assault will offer a new four-player cooperative multiplayer mode, in addition to the series' 32-player competitive play. There will be expanded community features, such as friends lists, ranking, and stat tracking.

Vehicles return to the fray in three classes--light recon, fast transport, and heavy armor. New weapons will be added to the mix, including nonlethal gear such as tear gas and pepper spray.

Fireteam Bravo 2 for the PSP will take place in the same setting as Combined Assault, and the dev team promises enhanced cross-talk functionality between the two platforms. The two will have a "unified story arc" and will feature cross-platform unlockables.

The game's single-player mode will feature 14 nonlinear missions, and maps can be replayed again with different objectives and enemy locations. Finishing missions efficiently and thoroughly will yield greater access to weapons and intel, and treating the locals well will earn their favor, which gives access to black markets and the natives' knowledge.

As was the case with the first Fireteam Bravo, multiplayer can be played with 16 soldiers both locally and over the Internet. Three new modes have also been added: tug-of-war control points, capture the flag, and target.

Next-gen gamers may have to wait a while to do the sea, air, and land thing on the PlayStation 3. The announcement made no mention of a SOCOM game for Sony's forthcoming console.

No official release dates have been announced for either game, but the SOCOM team has targeted a fall release (the EB Games site had a November 7 date for Combined Assault) and will reveal more information during E3.

XtReMeGaMeR4eVa they already have done that. Socom 3 was horrible, and you can tell which each one they add to the series its getting worst.

very very cool news indeed. Big fan of the series. Both PS2 and PSP. Im just wondering if the ideas of additional maps for Socom 3 were scrapped and just an entire knew game is what it is.

This is freaking rediculous, another god damn ps2 game wtf??? What exactly am I supposded to be so excited about with the ps3 release now that 3 major franchises are wasting time making games for the current gen. It's not going to be very easy to justify my need to have a ps3 at launch, to my fiancee, while playing FFXII, GoW2, and now Socom 3 1/2.

Yeah! thats right, for those of u whinning about Socom3 stop it please. Each installment of the series has been better,Socom3 is the best of the series so far and the best Shooter Online period. Zipper has made a smart move to PS2,this will tigh usover till Socom4 PS3 arrives & believe they are developing #4 as we speak.

Camping? Terrible? Run and Gun? Waiting in bushes? It's a tactical game based on MILITARY TACTICS. If you want to run and gun there are plenty of people still playing SOCOM 2 from what I hear. Ultimately to each his own so I won't bore you with which game I think is better. However I will say that SOCOM 3 was based on players working as a TEAM when playing online. Hence the reason the maps are so big and the addition of land and water vehicles. I consistently average 5 kills per round so maybe you should learn to fire your weapon instead of complaining about things you need to do to win. Think about it, whiners! Out.

Hulkster905 are you kidding me? SOCOM 3 was NOTHING like run and gun. SOCOM 3 was more CAMPING and WAITING in bushes then running in gunning. If you tried to run and gun you would get shot silently from some terrible player shooting you in a bush, or you would get ran over by a truck. SOCOM 2 was more run and gun, you could actually run and gun and get like 4-5 kills a round. SOCOM 3 killed the series. SOCOM 1 and 2 were the BEST online games I have played. SOCOM 3 they just went nuts and expanded everything making it TERRIBLE. SOCOM 4 for the PS3 should play like SOCOM 2, and if this Combind Assault game or whatever plays like SOCOM 3 it will FLOP. Can't believe they killed such a fun and addicting game. SOCOM 1 + 2 > >>>>>>>> 3.

Again why put your talent to work on a PS3 title when the units will be limited compared to so many more PS2's out there.

Hulkster905

I just hope it plays like Socom II in campaign mode, you know, realistic. S3 was too run and gun feeling, and how you had to shoot people more times than previous games.

Why make another PS2 Socom when they could just make a PS3 Socom.

Well dang I was hoping that Socom would be on the PS3, but hey it's still cool non the less!! i just hope the graphics will look better, and I also hope when you actually snipe someone that someone will fall down! because that's been a big issue in Socom 3. But heck yes I'm definately getting those two games whenever they come out!

I love the people complaining about Sony milking a franchise. Hello, heard of a little company by the name of Nintendo? Not only are the working on a PS3 version, the are supporting all their platforms (unlike Microsoft) . Not everyone is going to run right out and by a PS3, so continuing to support the PS2 is an excellent idea. How is supporting the biggest selling console considered milking it, DLUX85. As long as the quality of the games are good and they aren't just Madden or Tony Hawk type yearly updates, I say bring them on.

DLUX85

I bet any monye its a rehash of the horrible socom 3. Zipper really destroyed Socom and now they are trying to milk more money out of the outdated ps2.

I love socom but is Sony keeps this up they will run this franchise dry in no time at all. I mean come on, you just released Socom 3 less than a year ago and you are supossed to be releasing PS3 soon??? Where is my PS3 Socom??? Sony needs to stop this before they ruin one of the very few franchises they actually have.

I'd rather see a new socom released early in the life of the PS3 than another on the PS2.

Eh, personally, I didnt like the fact that you had to use the PSP version to unlock things in SOCOM3 (though only one thing actually required it, the other option to getting them was beating SOCOM 3 on the hardest difficulty :\ ) Either way, its cool to see the series expanding, I just dont like the codependance expanding as well..
