Duke Nukem Forever delayed

Gearbox Software's long-in-the-making action game's release date now pegged for June 10 debut internationally, June 14 in North America.

In January, 2K Games and Gearbox Software did the unthinkable: The publisher/developer duo slapped a May 3 release date on the elusive Duke Nukem Forever. Now, that date appears to have been a bit ambitious.

In a very sarcastic Gearbox Software video released today (embedded below), studio president Randy Pitchford announced Duke Nukem Forever's new release dates. The game will arrive internationally on June 10 (the day after the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo wraps up) and on June 14 in North America.

Gamers are going to have to wait another month to unleash Duke.

Initially announced in 1997, Duke Nukem Forever was synonymous with vaporware for over a decade. While at original studio 3D Realms, it went through at least two engine changes, with its protracted development reportedly costing over $20 million to $30 million.

Then, in early 2009, publisher 2K Games' parent company Take-Two lost patience with 3D Realms, refusing to give it the funds to continue development of the game. It went on to sue the suburban Texas developer, with court documents revealing the New York-based publisher was developing another Duke Nukem game, Duke Begins, with Gearbox. That developer, flush with cash from the success of Borderlands, went on to buy all Duke Nukem Forever assets and the Duke Nukem IP itself last September.

Gamers looking to get their hands on the game prior to its new release date can participate in a Duke Nukem Forever demo, which is playable by purchasers of the Borderlands Game of the Year Edition. Unfortunately, neither 2K nor Gearbox has slapped a start date to the demo. However, for more on the demo, check out GameSpot's time with the it from PAX Prime 2010.

When Duke Nukem Forever does launch, it will be available in both a standard edition, as well as a Balls of Steel Collector's Edition for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. This top-tier bundle includes a bust of the titular hero, a set of playing cards, dice, and two casino chips. A comic and hard-cover art book are also included in the collection, along with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

Ya ya...been hearing it for nearly a decade and a half. Lost interest years ago, don't care. The most epic fail in gaming history.

Is it possible that after all this time and delays the game might actually be rubbish??? 10+ years in the making should mean this will be the Avatar moment in gaming....but whe it comes to the games industry its hard to think of a title that has taken this long purely because they want to deliver something amazing.....I won't be pre ordering this

The "Balls of Steel" edition will probably be rusty by the time we get this:) If they need more time to get it right, then take it. I want a good realease from the Duke.

Probably want to throw on an extra coat of polish. Working on a game for 14 years and showing up with patch in the first day or so wouldn't look good for them.

Well, dont think of it as a delay...think of it as an extension of reality as we know it. You know, before pigs fly and Hell freezes over. ;)

Hey, maybe they are updating the apparently "outdated" graphics. Though I dont care, people complain about it all the time.

I don't understand some people's reactions here. 'Oh no the game got delayed for a month, okay that's it I've been waiting 13 years, but another month is too long, I'm cancelling my pre-order, I refuse to buy this game.' I really just don't get the logic behind that. They're not under a contract to finish it by when you want it. The game will be out... when it's done!

A one-month delay doesn't sound such a big deal. It was available in playable state a few times now so I don't think it won't be released. Also better release it late without bugs etc than release it early in a buggy state.

Better late then never.

By the looks of how many ppl posted a comment, i'd say the majority of u guys r pissed. I dont even need 2 read the comments. But then again if this wuz a new Resident Evil that wuz announced madd long ago & never came out & then out of the blue it has a release date & then like a month later it wuz announced that it is delayed, i'd b mad 2. But its not a RE game so im not pissed. Sucks 2 b the ppl who want this game.
