DualShock 4 will work on PC at launch

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida says the DualShock 4 will be able to perform "basic functions" on Windows PCs, and that "the analog sticks and buttons will work just fine."

The DualShock 4 controller will work on PCs at launch, Sony has said.

Speaking on Twitter, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida said the new controller will be able to perform "basic functions" on Windows PCs, adding that "the analog sticks and buttons will work just fine."

Some of the more advanced features of the DualShock 4 controller, and perhaps unlikely to function via the PC, include a light bar, a capacitive touchpad, and motion sensing capabilities. The pad will be available at launch in black, red, and blue colours.

It is unclear if the controller will support PC out of the box, or will require additional drivers in order to function. The PlayStation 3's DualShock 3 controller did not include driver support for PC, though a few third-party workarounds are available.

Microsoft will also release an update for the upcoming Xbox One controller to make it compatible with the PC sometime in 2014.

The PlayStation 4 will launch on November 15 in North America for $399, and on November 29 in Europe for €399/£349.

The PS4 controller seems amazing. They improved almost everything that was wrong with DS3.

Brilliant marketing and business strategy. Get the money from the PC gamers too. Smart move Sony :)

Whilst this won't matter much for me since I use a PS3 controller with MotioninJoy, what it does mean is that hopefully games made for PC will have the option of PS controller setups. I see a lot of games for windows with the xbox360 controller set up, maybe devs will work for both options now.

Nice to hear. PS3 controllers worked right away on Macs, but it took a little work to get it working on the PC side. Got it to work. Stay away from MotioninJoy though. That crap overwrites a lot of important files on your PC.

It works for anything but racing games, as the triggers are horrible and I don't see much improvement in this over the DS3. (The touchpad will be useful, but only for games like Jetpack Joyride. It's overkill.)

Keyboard and Mouse> Any Controller!!

Don't most PC gamers prefer the mouse and keyboard anyway? Not hating, but I just can't play games like that. I have done it but I didn't like it.

Who cares it won't be worth buying for my PC anyway there will be cheaper better controllers than this that do more on PC. Their just trying to sell controllers if all that works are the basics why pay $60.00 for a controller that does nothing?

Oh hell yeah! I always wanted to use a PS controller on my PC (I'm currently using the 360 controller, but I'm not a huge fan) Never have I thought I'd be using a PS4 controller! Great move Sony!

They will hack the controller the day its out, and the next day pc's will be doing more than what the ps4 will do with the controller.

That's nice, I won't have to run joytokey every time I use my laptop. I gotten so used to using a controller doing everyday computer stuff.

fuck ya!!!!

i prefer the Playstation controller over the 360 controller, i like the button layout more & it fits my hands better. i can then give my 360 controller for my PC to my roommate & just use this, instead.

Yay! Congratulations Playstation for doing what has been done for the last 10 years! Nah I'm just kidding lol but that's good though.

Good news. Too bad about the touchpad etc. but perhaps that will come in time.

After emulating my Dualshock 3 for a while, I finally switched to a wired 360 controller when I couldn't open chests in AC3 (it just would not detect my stick movements properly!) 360 sticks are good & the triggers are snappy but everything else just doesn't quite feel right. The D-pad is horrible & I'm not really a fan of the offset sticks either.

It will be a while before I pick up a PS4, I'll wait for enough good exclusives to make it worth my while, but this is definitely a plus. The DS4 controller looks great.

sounds great ! The only real problem is the incorporated battery that will wear out in time :(

Sounds great.  I tried those workarounds for the ps3 controller on Windows 7 and ended up having to format. They really messed up my computer.  Worked great on Windows XP though.

You can bet it will require additional drivers, like the current one does. M$ anti-competitive BS as they always like to do with Windows.

I can't emphasize this enough, but Sony has definitely been making a lot of good moves with this coming generation. I'm really excited. If I didn't hate the design for the Sony controllers I'd get one just for my PC gaming, but as it stands I'll just use my 360 controller until the X1 is compatible. That being said, this is still really awesome. Keep up the good work Sony!

@tightwad34 I do, but I found PoP: The Forgotten Sands to be unplayable with mouse-n-keyboard. I don't remember why I got it on the PC though, probably price.

d3ejmz

@tightwad34 WASD is for guys without carpal tunnel. I have it, so XB360 gamepad works well for me. You hold your hands in a much more neutral position when using a gamepad. It's for this reason I was never able to get into Bioshock 2. Actually, any game where you need to sneak needs the analog sticks to work right, or have an awful acceleration algorithm attached to WASD, but I digress.

@HailHellfire

I like the 360 triggers better, and the thumb sticks. I also like the colored buttons over the black ones.

But I like everything else better about the PS3 controller, including the d-pad and analog stick placement. Really, if the PS3 controller had better triggers, it would be basically perfect.

rarson
rarson

@bbq_R0ADK1LL

Sounds like you're like me, I like the sticks on the 360 and the triggers, but I like the d-pad and layout of the PS3 better.

I do hate that the PS3 buttons themselves are not color-coded. It would make button identification a lot easier if they were.

Ayato_Kamina_1

@Printul_Noptii Rather have that than some big ass AA batteries in it :p My PS3 pad still works fine, even after 6 years.

@lion2447 Never use Motionjoy. lol it overwrote a lot of key files on my PC. I found another workaround that was a lot better, though in the end I still used the 360 controller. At least I know I can do the PS3 controller, though. But, yeah, stay away from MotionJoy. People don't realize what it's doing to their computer.

bbq_R0ADK1LL
bbq_R0ADK1LL

@lion2447 Did motioninjoy not work for you? I was using that for quite a while before I finally gave in & bought a wired 360 controller.

HailHellfire
HailHellfire

@rarson @HailHellfire

it will be the PS4 controller, not the PS3. so there is hope for you yet, that they make the triggers the way you like them, when this comes out. the thumb sticks for the PS4 look like they have more grip to them & arent dome shaped like the PS3 controller was. so you might also like that feature, more. but that is just from me looking at the picture. we all wont know until we see & hold it in RL.

Ayato_Kamina_1
Ayato_Kamina_1

@rarson @bbq_R0ADK1LL Well strictly speaking they are colour coded. Blue cross, red circle, green triangle, pink square.

And if you fancy doing a bit of engineering, you can buy custom buttons off eBay and put them in yourself.
