DualShock 4 touchpad is clickable

Touchpad on DualShock 4 controller can be clicked in, though no gameplay purposes yet revealed.

The DualShock 4's touchpad can be clicked in, GameSpot confirmed on the E3 show floor today. It is unclear how this functionality will be used in games, and a Sony representative declined to go into further detail.

The touchpad is one of the DualShock 4's most noted additions from past iterations of the controller.

Blizzard Entertainment has confirmed that the touchpad will be used for inventory management in Diablo III, but has not gone into further detail on how this will work.

The PlayStation 4 launches this year at $399, a full $100 below the Xbox One.

That actually sounds awesome.  I'm wondering how a game like Starcraft could be adapted to a PS4 controller.  The PS4 might actually be a console that can play RTS games properly; something the PC has had advantage of all this time.  Though, I can't imagine it will play better than the tried-and-true mouse and keyboard.  But a step in the right direction, for sure.

Clickable.  Intriguing.

I'm curious how devs will utilize it.  Because that's what it's all about, the devs using the tools they been given.

Might take a year or more until we actually see innovative use of the touch pad.  Like how it took Resident Evil: Code Veronica to show how to properly use the Dreamcast VMU.

Could it be used in melee sequences?

Funny all the hate for the touchpad. Is it necessary? Probably not, but at least they are doing something different. The Xbox controller looks like the same over-sized piece of shit that it's always been.

I don't like the ps4 controller but it's not like I have any other choice,so I'll deal with it...

I can see it's usefulness in surfing the console's multimedia features with some sort of on-screen pointer. Maybe some use for RTS games as well; sure as shit could have used something like this when I played Supreme Commander.... Anywho, it's still WAY less "gimmicky" that XB1's ridiculous and useless multitasking ability....oh, I'm in the middle of a heated multiplayer firefight, let me just minimize this screen and Google some crap on the side at the same time. Retarded. Trust MS to keep coming up with solutions for which there are no problems to begin with.

wow. we're gonna have to pay a fraction of the controller cost for that garbage?

It could work like a laptop touch pad for right clicking something or just an extra button.

Sony isn't revealing what happens when you click the touch pad.  My guess is that whenever you're playing a game and you click it you are magically transformed into the game (like Tron) where you interact in the virtual world.  You then tap the back of  your kneck twice to return to the real world if you're being hailed to the dinner table.

what a waste.. now that the wii U has bombed sony will never use the touch pad at all ... lol. which sucks because this controller probably added 100 bucks to the ps4 final price tag!!

I think when you push the touchpad down it will bring up the inventory!  :)

I like the fact that Gamespot keeps mentioning the Ps4 is 100$ cheaper than XOne on their news articles. It's funny.

How do you pause the game with no start button...

THey missed a HUGE opportunity to allow undumbed down games. Just imagine a small cheap maybe even a monochromatic display under the pad that would allow pictures of icons- and emulating lots of hotkeys like on a keyboard.

I think ii wouldn't add nearly anything to the cost. Just a 1 color cheap display capable of displaying 1 color icons

@constantterror I hate the 360 controller, I find the joysticks positions so awkward and just doesn't feel right to me and always loved PS controllers, but this is just opinions

VXXXJesterXXXV

@constantterror ummm, personally I've always preferred the 360 controller, mainly due to the placement of the left analog stick and ergonomics.  Also it was designed better, the triggers curved the right way, the analog sticks cupped your finger, and mist importantly the analog sticks felt more responsive.

having said that i am getting a ps4 exclusively this gen and do consider this to at least appear to be an improvement, I really want to get hands on with it.

sanchango

@constantterror I own all 3 current systems, I prefer 360's and wii's controller over ps3's contrroller. I can't say anything about the one's or ps4's controller since i've never physically held it, but I will say it is an upgrade.

@monson21502 3 things for you:

1- I can't understand how the Wii U would come to anyone's mind after seeing the REAL next-gen consoles!

2-Has one company's inventing pads restricted other companies of making their own?!

3-Even with that extra feature! the PS4 is a bargain and worth every dime :P
