DualShock 4 can support PlayStation 3 with limited functionality

Video shows DualShock 4 controller playing Urban Trial Freestyle on PS3.

The DualShock 4 controller is somewhat compatible with the PlayStation 3, a YouTube video has shown.

YouTube user Udetto showed the controller in action In his latest episode of his Computer Spiele series, running Urban Trial Freestyle in the process.

The controller only runs with a wired connection, and Udetto adds that the controller's performance varies depending on each game.

Sony has also confirmed that basic features of the DualShock 4 will be compatible with Windows PCs, although the company has not said if it will be publishing its own official drivers to allow compatibility with features such as the touchpad.

The DualShock 4 will be available separately with from the PlayStation 4--in Jet Black, Magma Red, and Wave Blue colours--with an recommended retail price of $59.99

The PlayStation 4 will be released on November 15 in North America and on November 29 in Europe.

"i hope they release a driver for ms-dos so i can play doom shareware with the touchpad or at least a driver for windows3 so i can play reversi"... yeah... they'll surely will... yep. totally legit.

wait... so you can buy PS4 controllers now?... without the system? and why would i want to plug a ps4 controller to play ps3 games?  press "share" to freeze your game... yay!! i so want to plug my ps7 controller to my sony walkman :D because, it's the same brand, they work, don't they?

I REALLY don't see the point. Who will have been holding off on buying an additional DualShock 3 in the hopes the 4 would be compatible to varying degrees?

I've  dropped my ps3 controller over 16 times now. Still works. :D

kinda dumb that the PS3 is forward compatible with the DS4 while the PS4 is not backward compatible with the DS3.

I really hope Sony releases Windows, Linux and Mac drivers for the DS4.

How about Dualshock 3 on the PS4?

So does this means that the PS3 is the first forward compatible console?

well, hope they release an update for the PS3 to support wireless connection to the DS4. If so, its a real opportunity for me to replace my DS3s, I mean all 3 of them randomly keeps pressing buttons by them selves

If touch pad doesn't work then I won't buy it for my PC. As simple as that. I still have several DS3s and I guess I'm just gonna have to stock up on some wired 360 controllers...

The Dualshock 4 looks kind of challenged compared to an XB1 controller... haha

I really hope Sony release official drivers for the PC.

nah i rather have the Xboxone controller

hope the Xbox One controller also works on 360. the 360's cheap, easily breakable controllers are the reason I've been playing my PS3 a lot more recently.

just use an Xbox One controller, and run the 360 through the X1 with HDMI passthrough, and it would be kinda.. sorta.. like having backwards compatibility

Kinda neat. not surprising as it is still a Dualshock controller. Touch panel and share button notwithstanding

Nice.

I'm more excited about the PS Vita remote play with the PS4. I hope is works on "95%" of games as opposed to just some.

Only time will tell.

Cool, wasn't expecting that. Considering I'm keeping my PS3 next to my PS4, this will come in handy :P

I wish it were compatible with all first party PS3 titles, the dualshock 3 is a piece of garbage.

Less than 5 weeks left for the beginning on the next gen consoles

@klonoa53 Nice. My first controller ended up on the far side of the room after it slipped out of my hands while playing Lair. (Bloody SIXAXIS.) It still worked as well though.

@Halloll and how who you play games that utilize the touch pad using a DS3???

@Hvac0120 Don't count on it. Thankfully there will be people making them unofficially.

@marvel456 it's so forward compatible it supports PS5 and PS6 controllers if you have one :D hell if you have a mind-reading device that works with usb, you can use it too!! even control the date in your time machine and print fried potatoes in your fast-food 6D printer  too :D super yay!!

@anfunny you're talking about PC, hopefully there will be a software to enable the touchpad on on the computer, all you need to do is wait

also, i suggest at least one wired 360 controlled, works as a charm on my Steam games =D

@demonkingx5 i rather have a dual shock3 or 360 controller attached to my ultramastersuperiorrace celeron m megamachine.

@Pre_ordered_PS4 I don't think that will be really handy, since you have to pair the controller to one console with a cord. Two controller on the table are more convenient in my opinion...

@freedom01

Nintendo fan boys will be offended.

Ultimately, they have only Nintendo to blame for delivering an out-dated, woefully slow console in the Wii U.

Life goes on. : D

@freedom01 Hard to believe it is almost here. Too bad neither system has any stellar launch titles. Certainly ones worth playing, but hardly anything to get overly excited about.

@Xx_DemonSoul_xX @freedom01 yeah, both have poor launch title..... but that wont stop me from getting it day 1 : )

@Gamer_4_Fun @ZombieGuyGeorge so, official support from sony so people can play with their propietary controllers on a non-propietary environment just for the lulz? i so want to see that. i dont think sony would want their investment used in microsoft games, and i don't think PC native games get programmed with dual shock 4 official support in mind. hell not even controller-supported games would use a touchscreen for input if it needs aditional years of development just fror the .0003% of the population who plug their ps4 controllers to play pc games.... and , say , why using a $59.99 controller if you can buy a $2 mouse with actual support and similar results? ... yep, just for the lulz....

@MusclesJAM PS3 controllers feel lighter because the battery is smaller. Remove the battery pack from a 360 controller and it feels just as light.

While I also prefer the 360's sticks having a bit more tension, they very quickly get worn out from just a small amount of wear and tear and become loose, so that they "wiggle" around their middle point even when you're not providing input. The PS3 sticks don't do that, they always bounce back up to the same place. PS3 sticks also have a smaller dead zone.

@Queuingreturns @robbiejones @dark_jedi79 I agree that the D-pad on the 360 is not well-designed at all.  However, as a person who does not play many fighting games, which is typically where a D-pad is important, the 360 controller is superior (IMO) to the dualshock 3 in every other way.

Analog sticks, placement of triggers, resistance of the triggers, and the weight of the controller are all better on the 360.  I've always felt that PS3 contollers are way too light and feel like toys.  And this is perhaps preference, but I feel that the offset analog sticks are much more comfortable to use.
