DS tops Japan's 2007 sales charts

Nintendo's dual-screen portable sells more than 7.1 million last year in island nation; Wii Sports is number-one software with 1.9 million units sold.

After three years and one complete redesign, the Nintendo DS is still one of the world's most sought-after gaming devices. The Associated Press reports that Nintendo's dual-screen portable was the best-selling hardware device for gaming in Japan, citing numbers issued earlier this week from Famitsu publisher and Japanese industry stat-tracker Enterbrain. According to Enterbrain's figures, the Nintendo DS reportedly sold 7.1 million units last year, bringing its lifetime-to-date total to 21 million in Japan alone.

At a little more than half of the DS's total, Nintendo's Wii took the runner-up slot in Japan's yearly hardware charts, shifting 3.6 million units in 2007. However, those numbers were undoubtedly impacted by Nintendo's inability to keep up with the insatiable demand for its console, which has seen supply constraints across the globe since launching in late 2006. To date, the Wii has sold 4.6 million in Japan.

Nintendo archrival Sony held the third and fourth slots for the year. In 2007, Sony reportedly sold 3 million PlayStation Portables and 1.2 million PlayStation 3s in Japan. Microsoft, which continues to struggle to gain footing in the Japanese market, fared far worse in the island nation, selling only 257,800 Xbox 360s in 2007 according to Enterbrain's numbers.

Unsurprisingly to those who follow Japan's weekly sales charts, Nintendo's Wii Sports took the 2007 software crown in Japan with sales of 1.9 million, reports the AP. Unlike most regions, Japanese gamers have been required to purchase the crowd-pleasing minigame compilation separately rather than receiving it packed in free with the Wii.

Citing Enterbrain's numbers, the AP reports that the Japanese gaming industry grew by 10 percent to 687.76 billion yen ($6.3 billion) in 2007.

bjmage - you miss the point. Everyone is trying to get a Wii in their house, regardless if they have other systems. People who don't even PLAY games want one, because they see how different it is. Its no longer a fad, its a social buzz. Its officially TRENDY to have a Wii now, like a home fashion statement. Watch how much larger the market for the Wii grows.

nvfigueiredo - good points made, but talking about katamari and okami, Im not talking about the consoles, but the developers who made them (Namco and Capcom). The console the game is/was on isnt the subject, but the originality being produced by the developers. Also, to answer your question, the Wii has set itself as a well-known item amongst a broad market, most people know how it works even if they have not played it yet. If Sony or Microsoft were to release a similar device, the public would roll their eyes and see it as a knock-off brand, and actually push away from the consoles more. In the end, the marketing staff at MS and Sony know this. In turn, it will not happen. They will try to find some other way, liek MS talked about using a videocamera to detect movements and use those to control your character. But don't expect to see an X-mote coming out on the next Xbox system. Nintendo's locked their tech into their image, and no one will be able to take that away from them.

Eventually, I'll own a Wii, a PS3 and a XBox360. I'm, personally, more of a XBox360 man. The PS3 has potential, but I'm waiting for the price to become more reasonably. The Wii is more, or less, for my 'Old School' fix. The 360 has some issues: titles like Unreal Tournament 3 being pushed back to 08/2008-simply to thin Halo 3s' competition! As well as the fact that most original XBox FPSs (my fav genre) aren't going to have an emulator-again, Microsoft sucking up to Bungie! Thus, upon the Wii becoming available, I may trade my 360 in towards a Wii. The PS3 will eventually be my true next-gen console. The Wii will be my Old School machine. The 360 will simply get me by for the time being. Microsofts cronyism/corporate polotics is ruining their relationship with me.

Hi BardKieran... "Games like Okami, Katamari Damacri, Wii Sports all offer new innovation in gaming, thinking outside the box. " Okami and Katamari Damaci are PS originals... Wii Sports is original, but just "OK" as a game. I still play one or two tennis matches per month, but that's pretty much it. I didn't play more than 1 boxing, bowling or baseball match. And 9 golf holes are just way too few. Wii Sports is a nice and extremely popular concept... poorly executed. Super Mario Galaxy is a great game, as was Super Mario 64. But It IS the same game, just with "upside-down" levels and a repetitve Wiimote-as-a-mouse Gimmick. The only original AND well executed game on the Wii is Metroid Prime. Still the same game, but a revolutionary (and working) interface. IMHO, 2 things most be observed: - The Wiimote is revolutionary and an excelent concept for "future" interfaces - The Wii - apart from the Wiimote - is a standard "legacy" console, on par with the... PS2 (God of War 2 as production values that no Wii game, up to now, has shown). And I still believe that the Wii should have, as standard, a "regular" controller and a Nunchaku/Wiimote... My question is, as allways has been since the Wii 1st day: What will happen to the Wii IF Sony or Microsoft launch a similar controller to the Wiimote? (probably the question is: "WHEN Sony or Microsoft launch it)

"This is no surprize, by the end of 2008, Wii systems will be as common of a household item as a dvd player." - bardkieran Uh, no they won't. DVDs are far more popular with a far larger population. DVDs and players will outnumber Wiis everywhere by a very large margin.

bardkieran
bardkieran

Nice. This is no surprize, by the end of 2008, Wii systems will be as common of a household item as a dvd player. Everyone out there is trying to get one. The Wii is slated to bypass XB360 in sales in America by June, more developers are making games for the system. It's pretty funny how some anti-Nintendo kids say that Nintendo keeps releasing the same games over and over, when games on other systems do the same thing. Halo 2 and 3 were just touched up versions of Halo using new processors, GTA 3 and on was pretty much the same game with new maps, Metal Gear Solid was pretty much the same game with new maps. Funny how Nintendo gets the accusation when everyone else is doing the same things.

Games like Okami, Katamari Damacri, Wii Sports all offer new innovation in gaming, thinking outside the box.

If you want to fight the lack of originality, stop buying games from Rockstar, EA, Activision, Blizzard, Epic, Ubisoft, Konami, Bungie, as well as Nintendo and Sega. Of course, if you do that, you'll find your selection VERY limited.

Bottom line is, similar games come out because people LIKE playing those games. So quit complaining about it.

sony and microsoft are at war not nintendo. Nintendo Wii is not in the same bracket as PS3/360. It's alot cheaper and more of a party system. Most mommies get this system for their kids or selves. When sony and nintendo were at war it was with gamecube/ps2 and ps2 murdered it. PSP vs Nintendo DS. DS also used to be a much cheaper system, now only a 70 dollar difference were and are at war and nintendo is beating them.

I would be very interested to know exactly how many Wii sales were an investment to protect ones Gamecube software library should said Gamecube ever breakdown. Im going to list the prices we pay for our consoles: PS3 - NZ$774.95 360 - NZ$599.95 (includes a copy for Forza 2, Viva Pinata - and this is the Harddrive version of teh 360, it's the full shebang). Wii - NZ$499.95 (includes Wii sports) Gamecube - NZ$149.95 (no longer available for sale) PS2 - NZ$249.95 (available as a Singstar or Buzz bundle, although when I bought mine it had GT4 and Ghost Recon 2 included). So, if you are in the market for a console with so-so graphics capabilities the PS2 would be the best choice. Pay an extra $250 and you can get so-so graphics with a new style of controller - basically you are paying $250 for the Wii remote & nunchuck, which is really expensive as far as controller peripherals go. Pay an extra $100 on top of that and you get a current gen console with the classic control style and 2 awesome games. Finally pay an extra $175 on top of all that to get a "future-proof" current gen console. Take your pick.

Good job Nintendo, your fighting this war well. Good job to you too Sony. 360, although you struggle I can see your sales getting better in the future, and Ace Cmbat 6 helped you out a lot last year, and us 360 owners in America salute AC6 for its help in helping you grow more in Japan. 2007 was definately a great year for gaming indeed!

While I enjoy playing games on every system with friends that have them, I have to agree. I still side with my childhood.

I am a nintendo fan, but I agree with some of what juggleJUGGLER has to say.Nintendo needs to get some new hit titles out there, and try to minimize the third party duds that are flooding the system. You cannot rely on Mario and Link alone...

I'm not surprise, the DS is a good console and it has a lot of good games as well. When it comes to the Wii it seems to be a very good console and what i have notice it also has some interesting games and there are more to come in the future. I don't have a Wii at the moment but i'm thinking of buying one. I have a DS but don't have any games for it at the moment. I'm one of them who trades a lot, but i still like it. I also have a xbox 360 and a PS3 and i like them both as well. -I'm not a fan-boy, i'm a Gamer-

I think the GameCube failed to really take off because it didn't offer anything unique over the PS2 or the Xbox. The Wii may be an overclocked GameCube, but it offers people a different way to play games just like the DS. I personally prefer the Xbox 360 over the Wii, but I can't deny the fact that Nintendo has become a force to be reckoned with.

the wii and ds can't keep with the 360 or ps3 with little mini games. if Nintendo didn't have such a loyal following it wouldn't be around. the rings of death is last year news so you can shut up about. my point is games and Nintendo has been making the same games over and over again. i like Mario don't get me wrong but i would like to go mortal kombat on his butt. Nintendo milks their popular characters to the fullest. wii has sold less games than the 360. to put it all in perspective Nintendo will dominate japan because japan is a slave to Nintendo and always will be. in America though Nintendo will eventually and soon maybe be over taken by the 360.

The Xbox 360 fails in Japan because of a variety of reasons. 1. Localization is not well done. A high percentage of games I've played on the Jbox360 has been translated from English into very incorrect and strange Japanese, or the English has just been rewritten into Japanese characters. 2. There are only two high profile RPG's on the system. One of them was mediocre, the other remains to be seen. 3. Online play is not enjoyable due to the English dominated, rude and offensive American players that dominate the Xbox 360's biggest online games 4. Most of the biggest games, such as Oblivion and Call of Duty 4 have yet to be released in Japan....yet Sony has them out on the PS3, properly translated too. 5. The Red Rings of Death problem is just as prevalent in Japan as it is the US. Every other system on the market has a much lower failure rate. Japanese don't tend to take risks in this regard. Microsoft can succeed in Japan, if they'd quit screwing up...remember, Japanese PC owners prefer Windows over all other operation systems, even those developed in Japan designed specifically for their language and tastes. Anyone calling the Japanese "racist" or "biased" really doesn't know much about what they're talking about. But what can you expect from a bunch of broke fanboys? Anyway Congrats Nintendo. The gaming market is once again in your hands.

360 sucks, get over it people. its also an embarrassment. i bet they laugh at us over there because we can't put a game machine together that works properly. the 360 is NOT an example of american technological achievement. we apologize to the world

Well, I'm not surprised by the DS numbers, but I assume the Wii numbers would be going down soon. Everybody tried Wii Sports by now. Then what? A lame online service, no downloadable content of any significant size, lame performance & graphics, and NO GAMES(!). Such a thing can't last very long. Not even in Japan!

nintendo seems to be doing well world wide juggler compare this to gamecube era. youll see a big difference ps2 was king last gen only due to its big luckluster library and cheap start price amung other things,,, ps3 started with limited number of aaa titles unlike ps2 that continues now ... and the way sony is doing things this gen is different from last,,, remember they used to drop the price not the value to drop the price,,, that is thier mistake well one of them the second is to make up for its short comings by putting charger cables,, with each controller we buy its not good when you only have 1 cord and 6 other dead controllers,,, same mistake is being made by microsoft is using only 3 usbs and able to have 4 wireless controllers what happens when all 4 are dead is a good question

juggleJUGGLER

this only happened because japan is a slave to nintendo and nintrndo is a slave to japan. the bigger story is why can nintendo sell systems but not games.

the 360 will never sell very well in japan much like it's predecessor due to the fact that they don't have any RPGs. Sure they have that windwalker studio cranking out a whole 2 games for them, but looking at the sales of Blue Dragon, the 360 is still a non-contender in the land of the rising sun.

kejigoto, Japan is small...geographically. Population wise the country is about half as big as the United States. Japan is gamer central, gaming HQ, w/e you wanna call it. The United States has its fair share of gamers, but I would say there are more gamers in Japan and South Korea than anywhere else in the world.
