The PlayStation 3 broke sales records this weekend by selling 165,000 units in the UK in two days, but Nintendo also has something to celebrate.

The Nintendo DS and DS Lite combined have now sold more than 3 million units in the UK, and the DS is also taking the lion's share of the 2007 handheld console market so far, with 68 percent of sales.

The company attributes the format's success to games and other software that have been designed to appeal to a wide range of people, including nongamers. Games in the Touch! Generations range include Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training (Brain Age in the US), Nintendogs, Electroplankton, and Sudoku Master.

Nintendo UK's general manager, David Yarnton, commented, "It's a great testament to the strength of the DS hardware and software range available."
