DS sells 3 million in UK

Nintendo's two-year-old handheld is leading the 2007 portable market in the UK; company credits success with nongamers.

The PlayStation 3 broke sales records this weekend by selling 165,000 units in the UK in two days, but Nintendo also has something to celebrate.

The Nintendo DS and DS Lite combined have now sold more than 3 million units in the UK, and the DS is also taking the lion's share of the 2007 handheld console market so far, with 68 percent of sales.

The company attributes the format's success to games and other software that have been designed to appeal to a wide range of people, including nongamers. Games in the Touch! Generations range include Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training (Brain Age in the US), Nintendogs, Electroplankton, and Sudoku Master.

Nintendo UK's general manager, David Yarnton, commented, "It's a great testament to the strength of the DS hardware and software range available."

Hell, I sold my PSP with a view to getting a DS. (don't ask why I got a psp in the first place, i saw the ds as a gimick, whoops!)

Besides its success with nongamers, I think the DS has great success with children...at least it does here in the US. I think the easy controls and cute, colorful characters (as well as the Nintendogs) appeal to a younger demographic than most games.

@waleywu_basic I do understand where you are coming from with your argument. Even though the PSP does have some high scoring games on it, there is nothing new and interesting about them (for me). They are basically PS2 games ported over and since I already have a PS2 i don't see the point of the PSP. With the DS, even though some games may also be easily ported over, it is the different way to play them that makes them fun and exciting. This is what has appealed to the mass consumer. If Nintendogs was just played with the D-Pad and buttons it would never have sold as well as it did. In my family alone we have 4 DS Lite's between us and one PSP which is gathering dust. I think this is the reality accross the world (this is a guess of course).

Good news for nintendo but how many of those sales went to gamers and not casuals? Mobile phone games are even bigger but they are not played by gamers. Its good Nintendo attracts more people to play their games and makes the industry bigger but I feel Nintendo neglets the gamers who pt the industry where it is today.

When my sister who has 5 kids and who has not touched a game device in her life....okay not completely true..she was addictive with game and watch in the 1980s: Octopus and Parachute and turtle bridge but thats another story... I know that the DS will be a success when she ended up playing Super Mario DS for two straight hours!

The DS is great and I would say that Mario Kart DS is the best game on it.

The DS really does appeal to non-gamers of all stripes. A retired couple saw me playing mine at Denny's, and then they went and decided to get one when they saw how intuitive and fun the stylus touch-interface was.

>But since you can always play older games you might want to check out the top games of all time. take out the 3 identical Nintendogs. you have almost exclusive platform jumping games. Don't get me wrong, I love Mario, but talk about milking an old brand

waleywu_basic> oh really?? go look at gamespot's DS top list and PSP's top list. I guarantee you'd learn something. If you are talking about the most recent top games you might have a point. But since you can always play older games you might want to check out the top games of all time. You'll get a different answer.

>PSP games could always be ported to DS as it has the same button configuration. really? fine, port GTA to DS, or any of the games I mentioned does it have the processor speed? when you buy DS for Brain age or Sudoku, you're obviously not a hardcore gamer.

"waleywu_basic Castlevania and A LOT of Mario games. other than that, very weak with it comes to 'hardcore games' now, you compare that to what PSP offers to hardcore gamers. MGS, Tekken, Syphon Filter, GTA series, in the future, GoW and FF Crisis Core. there's no comparison. but people will continue to buy DS" Define 'hardcore games'... do you mean ultra violent gorey full of swearing games? Because last time I checked, games were for fun, not violence.. that would be movies. PSP is too boring, and if I wanted to play those games, I would get a console system. The DS offers games that are not even possible on the PSP, yet PSP games could always be ported to DS as it has the same button configuration. You're stuck in the past my friend.

As usual the DS is winning again, probably due to the good gaming philosophy backing it and it's games up. waleywu_basic and Jazizzle what makes a game hardcore? I am a gamer and I have been one for a long time and I know. First the games have to be good, something that the PSP hasn't been good at producing. The important thing about a good "hardcore" game isn't seriousness, violence, or flashy graphics. What makes a hardcore game is the deep inner workings of that game: how addictive is it, can you play for hours and hours, is it really really fun? Playing one of those mediocre GTA's on the PSP, or killing people in MGS isn't hardcore. Hardcore is not being able to put a game down because you love it so much. Hardcore is getting every blue coin In Super Mario Sunshine, it is playing Zelda or FF over and over because you loved every second of them, or it is playing Tetris DS for so many hours that you forgot to sleep that night. Hardcore gamers have fun, because hardcore gamers know what makes gaming great.

@ Celor I'm with kavadias1981 on this one, maybe the reason you dont like your ds is cause you only have 2 games for it ...

I really don't understand why the DS is so popular. I purchased one nearly a year ago and I only have two games for it. Needless to say; I don't like it.

waleywu_basic
waleywu_basic

you win and you lose with casual gamer/non-gamer as your target audiences.. you win.... by having your console sold to more people you lose... by having those people who probably only buy 1 games a year if not less... You tell me, how many grandpas who bought Wii for Wiisport, are going to go and buy Zelda and future games?

MoogleDragoon
MoogleDragoon

The only problem I see is if a casual gamer bought the system for sudoku they are not going to make any money of them because lack of software sales. Don't get me wrong that is a great feat for Nintendo I'm proud of them. I was just thinking that when I read it.

Articuno76

You'd think they would have more market share, but I guess most of the PSP's momemtum came from early on and is slowly going to vanish. Not bad given that the UK has typically been Sonyville.

GTCzeero

I like the DS, but I haven't had a proper (non-kids/ non-gamers) game for ages that has the power to tear me away from my PSP. We're still waiting on titles like Hotel Dusk, which is a shame because that looks awesome.

icym
icym

That great news for Nintendo. Its a wide range of games that everybody plays and selling well. Not just the hardcore gamers, but casual gamers too. Tapping into that market isn't easy. So many have tried the portable market and how many have done well since the 80s?

I think the news page summaries say it all: PSP had the biggest launch, but the very next story, the DS is the overall sales winner. No surprise if the consoles happen to follow the same path in a year's time.

waleywu_basic
waleywu_basic

68% of the market share... that's down from 100% before PSP. I mean good for Nintendo, but if your benchmark games are Brain training, Nintendogs, and Sudoku.. you know it's not for serious hardcore gamers. for me, I will stick with my MGS Portable Ops.
