DriveClub PS Plus Edition revealed

New version of racing game will be available for subscribers when PS4 launches later this year.

Tonight during Sony's E3 2013 briefing, the company announced DriveClub PlayStation Plus Edition.

The game, described by SCEA president Jack Tretton as a "huge AAA title," will be available to PlayStation Plus subscribers when the PlayStation 4 launches later this year.

In addition, Sony confirmed more details concerning PS Plus for the PS4. Tretton explained that new titles will be available for subscribers every month, including Don't Starve, Outlast, and Secret Ponchos.

Tretton also confirmed that the PS Plus memberships PlayStation 3 subscribers already have will work on the PS4. In a similar fashion, Xbox Live memberships for the Xbox 360 will carry over to the Xbox One.

What's all this crap about having to have PS Plus for online multiplayer? They didn't say that, did they?

M$ is giving 2 5-years old games. Sony is already giving you PS4 games for free.

I'm curious to know what "PS Plus edition" actually means.
Something will probably be left out.

@AvatarMan96 It was added to the list of things you get with Playstation Plus...but might only be that way for PS4.

@AvatarMan96 i bet you never own a ps3 lol. you just confused.

 ps3 owners have an option to play online free.... or if they pay they will have loads of AAA games to play for free as long as you a subscriber. and you can also play hundreds of full game for 1hour without paying a penny!

now for what they saying in this article is..... if you are a subscriber to ps plus you will get to play drive club FREE!

@Halloll I'm gonna' go ahead and say they either moved it to Ps4 and it's too early to really say anything about it-- or it's just gone.  Let it go for now.  Enjoy what is out there and what is coming now.

@combigotes Yes, but honestly, they give you free games every month and countless discounts, anyway, so it's still better than Live.

@combigotes Yes, you need plus now. If you watched the PS+ part of the presentation one of the bullet points said. Multiplayer online access.

@agpickle Me Too. It sounds like you don't get the full game, or you can only play against other people that have that same edition

@BillJr106 People who don't like hardcore simulation type driving games. This game might fill the Project Gotham sized hole with a few twists in it. Could be really good, will wait until it launches and I get my grubby mitts on it.

@AskanTale @AvatarMan96 AHEM...  Drive Club "Playstation Plus Edition" not the full game.  You have the option to buy the full selection of cars and tracks, but get an undisclosed percentage in the free edition.  That's right, PS Plus just went free to play methodology the Diablo III way, by not being free!  xD

@AskanTale @AvatarMan96 To play online you have to be a plus member. To use online music, video etc services is free. Seriously though PS plus is a great deal. It pays for itself in the first month

@AskanTale @AvatarMan96 No they said you do in fact need online for multiplayer on the PS4 as a compulsory measure. Likely due to the cost of running all the new servers.

@Shango4 @combigotes it is not free anymore.  If you listen to what tretton says, he basically tells you what non ps plus members will be able to do and thats no online play.  No biggie, I own ps plus anyway.

@carbonFibreOpti @AskanTale @AvatarMan96 Nm, I found it. Bad move on Sony's part, but if they didn't do something they'd never sell a single copy of Drive Club since Plus is now required for Online. Give it time and the free goodness will flow.

@AskanTale I'm guessing they are probably using PS+ to subsizize the PS4 lower price, that GDDR5 ain't cheap and the better GPU to boot. I still wonder how they managed that $399 price tag, I'm guessing PS+ subs might be footing that bill. I'm a bit gutted but I had PS+ and it's really good discounts and free games more than make up for the entrance fee. Well neither system has free online play, there is always PC for free online. At least you can still play PS4 no matter how long your internet goes down or should you hit a rough patch and had to cut the internet. That is going to hurt some people, big time.

@Atomic_Gumshoe @AskanTale @AvatarMan96 yeah i like ps plus too. i got a free trial before and it is amazing! especially hundreds of full games you can try out for 1hour is the main epicness for me. i can get my hands on full game and try it out befor buying it. thats the real reason ps plus so awesome! oh and theres always new free AAA every few months and each time like 3,4 AAA games, greedbox owners should check it out. pay xbox live and get shiet!

but still sucks if ps4 opted out from ps3's free online though.

@gamespotgunners @AskanTale @AvatarMan96 To anyone's knowledge, Sony doesn't have ANY multiplayer handling or matchmaking servers available to third parties nor have they bought any new ones.  Microsoft can justify their fee because they do all matchmaking for all games, as well as do all quality testing for updates and content, and as far as I know even build and maintain third party apps like Netflix.  In fact, they re-encoded 105 additional quality levels for Netflix movies and host it themselves to give better playback.  Your fee goes to that on 360...  and apparently just goes into someone's pocket on PS4.

They need to clarify exactly why you need to suddenly pay.  If they are indeed doing their own matchmaking, I'll be happy.  the one thing that killed the PS3 for me was 1990's level multiplayer lobbies or broken developer-hosted matchmaking (CoD I'm looking at you).

AskanTale
AskanTale

@gamespotgunners @AskanTale @AvatarMan96 yeah its pretty still not clear. it would not be good if ps4 gotta pay for online though. still be gaming hard on ps3!!!!!!

 and if every console trying to act like microsoft about the online fee then no mo gaming!

@AtheistPreacher @Maximaboi @Shango4 @combigotes

^ these folks are correct...he should have just said it though...why hide it and make people confirm? with all the good news they shared via used games/no online checkups and the price tag people would have just rolled with it...already pre-ordered...

@Maximaboi @Shango4 @combigotes

Yep.  They were careful not to actually come out and say it directly, but it very much sounds like PS+ will be required for online play this time around.

Disappointing.  I had hoped that Sony would continue to be the good guys on this.  But it wasn't to be.  I'll still be getting a PS3.  And same as the above commenter, I already have PS+ anyway.
