Sammy Studios has today announced that it will release Drift Racer: Kaido Battle for the PlayStation 2 in February 2004. The game, which is currently in development at Genki, will feature more than 150 licensed cars and is inspired by the now legitimate sport of drift racing. The sport itself started out as an underground race form where drivers would perform precision powerslides on the treacherous mountain roads of Japan known as the Kaido.

"Drift racing brings together automotive technology and human skill to create a thrilling new form of racing," said Tim Pivnicny, senior VP of sales and marketing at Sammy Studios. "Drift Racer: Kaido Battle captures all the important elements needed to re-create that thrill in a video game. Licensed cars and parts, authentic tracks, and various modes, including a career mode that lets players evolve from the underground into the pro ranks, make this the ultimate experience for all racing-game fans."

Drift Racer: Kaido Battle will feature five gameplay modes in total and will allow players to compete in both official daytime events and illegal nighttime races. All of the cars in the game will be customizable to some degree, and the dozen or so manufacturers represented in the game include Nissan, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Mazda, and Volkswagen. We'll bring you more information on Drift Racer: Kaido Battle as soon as it becomes available.
