Drew Brees lands Madden NFL 11 cover gig

New Orleans Saints QB and Super Bowl XLIV MVP will grace box of EA Sports' NFL-authorized football sim, due out in August on the PS2, PS3, PSP, 360, Wii, and iPhone.

by

It's safe to say that 2010 has been a good year for Drew Brees. The NFL quarterback led his team, the New Orleans Saints, to victory in Super Bowl XLIV in February, completing 32 of 39 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns. As a result, the Saints--who were displaced for a season following Hurricane Katrina in 2005--earned a first-ever Super Bowl victory, with Brees himself named the game's MVP.

Drew Brees is having a good 2010…until he's hit by the Madden Curse.

Now, Brees has earned another accolade--in the game world. This morning, EA Sports announced that the Purdue University alum will be the cover athlete for Madden NFL 11. He was chosen over Minnesota Vikings defensive end Jared Allen and Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne in an online vote conducted by EA Sports. Electronic Arts' sports division will also be using its Web site to allow voters to rate rookie players during the NFL Draft, which begins today at 4:30 p.m. PDT/7:30 p.m. EDT.

Madden NFL 11 is set for release this August on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Wii, PSP, and iPhone. Developed by Orlando, Florida-based EA Tiburon, the game will introduce GameFlow, a new coaching system that lets players call more realistic, situational plays in less time. It will also feature an overhauled presentation with new audio and broadcast flourishes, as well as revised animations and online features.

The Madden NFL 11 cover adds to Brees' 2010 triumphs, which come five years after his career was almost ended following a shoulder injury in the last game of his 2005 season with the San Diego Chargers. Such mishaps will certainly be on the minds of his fans, due to the so-called "Madden Curse" that has afflicted many players chosen to cover a game in the 21-year-old series. Most recently, one of Madden NFL 10's cover athletes, Pittsburgh Steelers Pro Bowl safety Troy Polamalu, suffered a knee injury in the second quarter of last season's opening game.

He wasn't the only one. Madden NFL 2008's cover athlete, Vince Young, received a knee injury that caused his backup quarterback, Kerry Collins, to start most of the 2008 season. After a string of injuries, 2007 cover star Shaun Alexander went from being the NFL's Most Valuable Player to being a backup running back in just two years. Madden NFL 06 cover athlete Donovan McNabb suffered a season-ending sports hernia halfway through the season after he was named cover athlete. Also, 2004 cover athlete Michael Vick missed most of the 2004 season after breaking his leg--and was incarcerated after being convicted on a series of gambling and dogfighting-related felonies in 2007.

@reeree746 here you go, 10 Troy was injury and out for most of the season. The other half Larry was ok, so it effects somebody. 09 Was suppose to be Favre retirement but it became a circus when he joined the jets. But he is wearing a PAckers' uniform on Maddon, but played for the Jets. Packers' fan hating. 08 Vince Young would lose his starting job to Collin a year later in 08 (he had a bad sophomore season 07 and people question him at the end of the season and lost this job in 08 ) 07 Shawn Alexander was a bust, got hurt and was never the same. First year of his decline too. 06 NcNabb only played in 9 on 05 and 10 in 06, one of the worst stat in his career 05 Ray Lewis got hurt and played his lowest amount of games: 5 04 is Vick, later on he would be known as the dog abuser 03 Marshall Faulk first year on the decline of 02-03 (NFL season 02-03 to Madden which is 03), not sure why they got an old guy here. It seem to effect a player a year or two. IF it is a running back it seem to be a decline year. This is like the Campbell soup's curse with Terrell Davis of the Broncos.

the curse did happen last year with Troy P. getting hurt. If Brees have a down year the curse lives.

I think the curse was broken last year halfway, Fitz had a good year with no injuries or off the field issues. Hopefully Brees can fully break the curse this year.

I can understand how accidents and injuries could be considered as a 'Madden Curse' but as for Vick's gambling and dog fighting...that was years later and purely his own doing.

For the people who say that New Orleans should stop using Katrina as an excuse, have you guys been there lately. 5 years later & there's still areas that look like Katrina just hit them yesterday. They still need help. I guess we should just let them be, forget that people are still misplaced & haven't been able to move on cause they have no home. And yes, that are other places that's been hit by natural disasters that should also shed light on. Some of you guys must have it real good....

reeree746
reeree746

They should just have the entire line-up of the Detroit Lions on the cover....all the way...

So the Vikings play dem Saints in the opener. I suppose this means he will be out by halftime? That's alright with me. Because apparently I'm one of the only people who actually hates the 'Aints.

Any bets on what his curse will be? :D I bet he falls down the stairs and breaks both legs! Seriously, though, why not just put Madden on the cover again. It would end all this "curse" nonsense.

My comment was not to insuinuate that Brees is not deserving, im just saying generally, Peyton has been a star almost as long as they have been doing this madden cover with players on the cover, and has not been on it once, despite in the long probably being in the top 3 qbs of all time, something the rivers will probably never boast. For that matter I do not believe Brady has been on it, Moss, arguably the best reciever of the era, etc. , clearly the cover at least to EA is not for the best player in the game. Look Brees is a great guy, I love when he stuck it to San Diego and that prick Rivers, whom SD kept and traded Brees, but you people need to get over this Katrina thing, New Orleans is not the only city to be devastated by a natural disaster, and that should have no relevance to sport. Lets not also forget its the most ingenious city ever built, 33 feet below sea level, bordered on three sides by the gulf, a lake, and the largest river in the US; bravo.

With all the voodoo they got in New Orleans, I'm sure they'll figure out a way to ward off a curse!

Good luck to him avoiding the curse. I like Drew Brees, and hopefully whatever happens doesn't screw him up too badly.

Ignorance is staying in a city that is below sea level when a hurricane is fixing to hit. Ignorance is a city, the NFL, major news outlets and all the marketers using a 5 year old natural disasters to make a profit. How many cities in this great country face natural disasters every year? I don't see them using a sports team to promote healing. I live on the eastern seaboard, above sea level and every time we have a hurricane warning we board up, leave, come back and rebuild without the help of the NFL and all it's marketers. I like Drew Brees. I wish he had beaten Marino's record and I love Marino, but don't get mad when people who have faced a natural disaster don't like another one being hyped 5 years after it happened. Man up, move on and live in the future. Go Madden! PS - I don't like the Colts either.

Good. I hope ,...sorry to say this to all the New Orleans fan, but I hope he falls victim to the curse, so when my Niners play them in the third week it might actually help give us a win!JK. Drew is a great quarterback and deserves to be on the cover, although I am shocked he took the offer, especially with more and more NFL stars deciding against it because of the so-called curse.

Drew's already gone on record as saying he doesn't believe in curses. He's played his rear off the last 4 seasons with the black and gold. Whether they repeat this year or not, they'll still be a contender.

Hopefuly the curse will kick in before the Saints come to Baltimore on Dec.19,.......LOL!.....JK But it's good to see the Wii getting a real Madden this year not some gimmick crap. The thing is EA needs to say to Nintendo fans use the classic controller I also don't see no Nintendo Wi-Fi

wow.... just wow at some of these asinine, mentally challenged statements about new orleans, and this team. we won. the colts didn't lose it, the saints won it. we out-played almost all of our opponents for the first time ever. And for those of you who still don't understand Katrina (and probably never will), please keep your ignorance to yourself. America almost lost it's most cultured city (and it still isn't recovered)

Haha, I'm pretty sure the reason the 'Madden Curse' exists is to show these guys that greed will get them nowhere. Keep taking that extra money you don't need for your advertising market, and we'll break your knee. Muahhaha.
