Dreamcast Hits 300K Mark
Sega announces that presales for the Dreamcast have hit the 300,000 mark.
Sega of America announced Monday that presales of its upcoming Dreamcast system have hit the 300,000 mark in the United States, a new record over the Sony PlayStation's 100,000 presale orders.
Sega estimates that on the first day alone sales will bring in $45 million, and roughly 14,000 copies at $199 each have been presold each week since the program began, though demand increased tremendously after August 2.
Sega also estimates that 400,000 units will be sold in the first month, including launch day on September 9, and the company expects to sell a million units by Christmas.
"Consumer demand for Sega Dreamcast continues to accelerate at an astounding pace," said Chris Gilbert, senior vice president of sales at Sega of America. "The unprecedented 300,000 presell order solidly positions Sega Dreamcast to break every sales record in entertainment history on 9-9-99."
