Dragonshard arrives in stores

Real-time strategy meets pen-and-paper role-playing in Atari's latest Dungeons & Dragons PC game.

The old dog of role-playing games, Dungeons & Dragons, is learning some new tricks these days. The 2006 release of Stormreach will see the venerable pen-and-paper license enter the massively multiplayer online role-playing game genre for the first time, while today marks its entry into the ever-popular world of real-time strategy with Dragonshard.

Developed by Liquid Entertainment, Dragonshard combines the large-scale battle gameplay of the RTS genre with the small-squad adventuring of the D&D license. The game is set in Eberron, the newest campaign world in the D&D universe, and one that was designed from the ground up with PC games in mind. For the first such game, players will find themselves in the midst of three factions fighting for control of the Heart of Siberys, an artifact of limitless power.

This is not the first time Liquid Entertainment has taken a cherished fantasy world and built a real-time strategy game around it, as the company also developed The Lord of the Rings: War of the Ring game. The company debuted in 2001 with the martial-arts-themed real-time strategy game Battle Realms.

Dragonshard is rated T for Teen and carries a $49.99 price tag. For the final word on the finished product, head on over to GameSpot's full review.
