Dragon's Dogma getting 'major expansion' in 2013

Dark Arisen content hitting Capcom's role-playing game next year; free updates Speedrun and Hard mode arriving by end of the year.

by

Dragon's Dogma will expand in 2013. Capcom today announced the Dark Arisen downloadable content for May's well-received multiplatform role-playing game. The content is due out next year and is described as a "full-blown major expansion."

Dark Arisen rises next year for Dragon's Dogma.

For now, concrete details on Dark Arisen are light, but Capcom did share a teaser trailer for the DLC (below). It spans 45 seconds and teases that "An epitaph speaks of another's demise" before fading to black.

Though gamers will need to wait until 2013 for the first major expansion for Dragon's Dogma, two free updates due for release later this year. The first of those is Speedrun mode, which tasks players with moving through the game as quickly as possible, with in-game equipment up for grabs provided certain time objectives are met.

The second free update for Dragon's Dogma is Hard mode. As its name suggests, the mode makes enemies more difficult to vanquish, and also offers up unspecified equipment rewards for players who embark on the challenge.

Capcom did not say exactly when the Speedrun and Hard modes will arrive later this year. For more on Dragon's Dogma, check out GameSpot's review.

Thinking of buying this game, but im wondering if they made any intention to also add a title update with the DLC, possibly addressing the main issues with the game like more accessible fast travel and AI? I really wish they added coop or pvp, it just makes more sense with the pawn system

They need to push the DLC aside and work full steam ahead on DD2.

This game fails at being a skyrim clone.  Capcom tried really hard, i'll give them that, and this is better than most of the crap they are making recently.

If DD2 has a fast travel system with updated AI for the pawns - it'll be an instant hit.

I hope it isn't like zombie-fying all the monsters and/or making the game creepy, because the ending was creepy enough

I wished they made Dragons Dogma 2, made it online like PS2 Everquest OA and added more classes. having expansion is one thing. Creating something better is another thing.

Glad to see more dragon's dogma, got to the point of owning all the ur-dragon earned items (short of 2 of the masks as I kept getting the same mask) and got some decent armour such as the twilight set, abyssinal gear and grisly bone armour but I did stop at that point. If my character from the original can be ported over it'll convince me to farm the ever falls for longer as I was just short of level 150 if I remember.

Glad to hear it!  This game was the "sleeper hit" for me this year.  The combat was so much fun.  I hope this DLC will be more than just a few hours of extra content.

At least they're not abandoning this awesome game! I haven't bought it yet because I don't believe in paying $60 for a game that i'm not going to get more than a few months of enjoyment out of.

@Crimson681

Yes, because Dragon's Dogma totally plays like Skyrim.

Seriously, is every Action-RPG a Skyrim clone to you?

Giantsfan22

@Crimson681 Wow...umm I really don't think so. About the only things they share are dragons and being an RPG. DD is a semi open world. It's world is not nearly as well made as Skyrim and the voice acting and quests feel 10-15 years old. The combat system is NOTHING like Skyrim...it 's actually fun. You can climb monsters, chain combos(kind of), and the entire system feels like it was pulled out of a straight action game. Both are good games but DD actually innovated while Skyrim is basically Oblivion 2 with better graphics and dragons. These ARE my opinions and are not to be taken as fact :)

 @Crimson681

They released in less a year of each other really unless capcom has a time machine or just godly at making games there really is no way it could be a clone of Skyrim.

@Mikrokosmik Dark Souls is one of my top favorite games, but I actually think it could learn a few things from Dragon's Dogma.  A blend of the two without the many annoyance of Dragon's Dogma would be excellent, but as it stands Dark Souls reigns supreme.

@TrueGB DD is still worth $50, if you ask me. Considering all the hours and fun I got out of it, the price is justifiable.

Pyrosa
Pyrosa

@TrueGB It's not quite big enough to warrant a loss-leader sale, yet it's successful enough that it's still  full-retail.

Sigil-otaku

@whitejackel You mean you got to the beginning of the game then? I wonder why the beginning of a game would be easy. Anyway the game can be a tad easy if you're the type to farm and gear up a lot but overall the first time you enter the everfalls and some other key moments like first dragon fights should provide some challenge and with hard mode hopefully you'll get back into it.

Giantsfan22
Giantsfan22

@Crimson681 With all due respect, not really. Dark Souls isn'tthe same type open world and the combat systems are very different. Dark Souls rewards patience and timing while DD is like an action game with heavy doses of RPG.DD's world also feels alive. DS was AMAZING but towards the end of my run, I kept thinking "Why doesn't anyone move until I get there?" Believe it or not, I really got sucked into the story of DS despite it's extremely subtle nature where as DD forgot it was an RPG and had horrible quests and even worse voice acting. Both sequels will fight for RPG(and game) of the year IMO when they release.

@Digitalghosty @Crimson681 And if you consider both were released less then a year from each other consider both had to be in a development period during the SAME time at one point.

And then there is the fact that both games have very different gameplay and combat systems. The only similarities they have is that there open world exploration in a medieval setting, and there are TONS of games that are open world in a medieval setting.

@Tzardok Actually, I probably would have never even tried this game if there was a Monster Hunter on PS3!

Yomigaeru
Yomigaeru

@TrueGB  @Razer361  @Tzardok Well, technically Monster Hunter IS multiplatorm, ut I question why they are making the next flagship entry for a portable platform (3DS). They moved Tri from PS3 to Wii due to high costs apparently...but then ported Portable 3rd from PSP to PS3. I suppose a port is cheaper than building a game from the ground up.
