Dragon Quest X hits Wii this August in Japan

Subscription fees detailed; Square Enix to host "Kids Time" program for children to play game for free.

After much waiting, Dragon Quest fans in Japan finally have a solid release date for the next game in the series, Dragon Quest X. Publisher Square Enix has announced that the Wii title will be out on shelves on August 2 in Japan.

Dragon Quest fever will hit Japan this early August. Good-bye productivity.

The standard version will be sold for ¥6,980 ($86) while the bundle containing a USB memory card will cost ¥8,980 ($111). If gamers are to buy the standard version, they will need to use their own USB memory card with at least 16GB inside.

Since Dragon Quest X is a subscription-based game, both versions will come with 20 days of free online play. The subscription fee plan is as follows: ¥1,000 ($12) for 30 days, ¥1,950 ($24) for 60 days, and ¥2,900 ($35) for 90 days. Payment can be made either by credit card or by using Wii points via Nintendo points cards. Players will be able to create up to three characters per account.

Square Enix will also host a "Kids Time" program where children can play Dragon Quest X for free for a specific period of time. There is no word on the previously announced Wii U version of the game at this point in time, or North American or European release dates.

Paying money, that's a nono Nintendo, we pay for the game, system, software and the internet and you want us to pay a feed umm that's like Xbox!! I'm just saying.

On-line only?! Monthly fee?!

Yeah, no thanks...I had high hopes for a dragon quest on the wii, pretty foolish of me I suppose since I will never play it :(

At first I thought "yay, a new Dragon Quest!"  but then I read it's for the low-powered Wii...then multiplayer only...then monthly sub.   Wtf?

Might as well forget about this game.

this is going to kill the franchise, i will not be surprised that when this is released that square will see a lynch mob, seeking justice for the violation and murder of a beloved series.  what i don't get is that the biggest calling card of dragon quest is that it has maintained a similar formula over the years i would not be surprised that this will be the last game of the dragon quest series, cause what they have done is try to kill dragon quest because it is now more popular than final fantasy

Hey, Monster Hunter Tri had a subscription fee in Japan but, not for the US. Hopefully this could turn out the same way.....Please?

Wow there is no single player aspect to this? Its subscription based only? I'm a DQ fan but I don't know about this if I have to pay a monthly fee to continue playing?

@ Evenios There will be one for the Wii U as well but either way both are gonna be the same. As much as I love RPG, I never liked the idea of it being online. As a fellow gamer I have had bad history with MMORPGs: EverQuest and Final Fantasy XI being two of them.

@SolanOcard It's like Pokemon. The target age group never changes. Old fans get bored and move in, and new kids move in. That's why it's a franchise that has been going on for over 25 years. Although I will admit, the older games are aimed at an older audience, like DQ4, but anyone who played DQIX will tell you it's clearly a kids game. A kids game with a lot of depth and a lot of grinding, but still a kids game.

Over $100 for a DQ game... or you need a 16 gig memory card... an online fee? I'll just try to live in my little fantasy world where SE made another single-player DQ game as glorious as DQ8 instead, thanks... :(

I think Dragon Quest X is a great game for Wii. The wii never had this kind of feature before. A subscription game is what the wii needed also to expand what their company can do.

oh great another great RPG series ruined by making a main game a MMO (number 11 hint hint) why can't all these MMO's be spin off's

@FlamingFury : DQ fans are the same age as pokemon fans? What are you talking about? I've been a DQ/DW fan since the heydey of the original Nintendo (think late 1980s). How is a franchise over 25 years old enjoyed only by kids?

they should have just made this for the Wii U.

The fan base in Japan is considerably larger so it might fair better there, just like how Monster Hunter has subscription fees there. I'm not too sure how DQ will be received if it has a subscription fee too here. Hopefully it won't like MH3 which would help a lot.

I highly doubt there going to make us pay here in North America, Capcom did this with Monster Hunter Tri.

Hmmm... so if we pretend we're kids, we could play this game online for free for a limited period of time? As much as I love Dragon Quest and hate MMORPGs, this game gear towards the hate route. I don't want to pretend I'm a kindergartener just so to play this game for free. Make the online free for all or just turn this into a regular DQ RPG Square Enix.

@Gelugon_baat Lol, the Nintendumb lineup consists of about half of the games being related to mario...Nintendo needs more variety.

@Gelugon_baat Yeah well, I'm not going to buy a Wii for just a couple of games. They need to use some common sense and stop with the exclusives...

Hellz yeah! Love me some Dragon Quest! Hope they make it easier to pay from abroad than Sony do.

This will either be a colossal failure, or a game changer. Generally, MMO's aren't aimed at children, and this will be one of the first of it's kind (free realms did try, but it wasn't as big a brand). I personally think it's too expensive for most parents, and considering DQ fans are generally the same age as Pokemon fans, I just don't think they'll be able to afford this game.
