Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 First Look

New characters, a refined camera, and an extended story mode are just some of the new features in this intense versus battle game.

by

The Dragon Ball series remains one of the most popular mangas of all time. With Dragon Ball: Raging Blast, you were given the opportunity to take control of your favourite character and lay down ki-infused attacks on the opposition. For the upcoming sequel, Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2, developer Spike Co. Ltd has listened to fan feedback and has made a range of improvements. We sat down with the team to learn about some of the new features and get a brief look at the game in action.

You take control of one of 90 characters from the Dragon Ball universe, 20 of whom are new to the series. The gameplay is standard fighter fare, albeit on a larger scale with heaps of Saiyan powers thrown in. This means you can engage in hand-to-hand combat in midair, fire off a bunch of kamehamehas, and transform into a super Saiyan. Each environment has destructible elements, so you can smash opponents into rocks and create huge craters in the earth using your powers.

Controls remain largely the same, but they have been tweaked to make them easier for newcomers. The often-flaky camera from the previous game has also been reworked, with an emphasis on framing the action, keeping both your character and your opponent in view at all times. There will also be a new combo system, though no details on this were revealed. The story mode has been expanded, allowing you to play through some of your favourite battles from the anime, including famed fights against Vegeta and Freiza. The story is told entirely in battle, and Namco Bandai was keen to point out that there are no cutscenes to take you away from the action. The publisher also mentioned that there would be seven game modes in total, but they are being kept under wraps for the time being.

Other improvements include more-detailed character design and additional unlockables. The original Japanese voices will also be included, and you can switch between them at any time. It's also promised that the game will run at a steady 60 frames per second throughout, which we saw for ourselves when we got a brief look at the game in action. Visually, the game differs little from its predecessor, though we could see additional detail in the hair and facial expressions of the characters. The over-the-top transformations and ki blasts were all present and correct, and the super Saiyan transformation remains as impressive looking as ever.

Dragon Ball: Raging Blast 2 is due for release in the third quarter of this year. Namco Bandai has promised to show more of the game at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, so keep reading GameSpot for more in June.

The best DBZ games ever are Budokai 3 and Tenkaichi 3. That being said I'm probably not going to buy this. Companies repeat themselves. To me it seems like the first game in a new DBZ game series is the introduction, usually lacking a lot. The second game is usually a repackaged version of the first game. And finally the third game, like Budokai 3 and Tenkaichi 3, have all the features you expected the first game to have and more. In conclusion I will be waiting for Raging Blast 3

no cutscenes so we can be kept in the action? wtf why take out the story thats what made dbz is the story they didnt just slap some characters and made a street fighting game. thats why i didnt buy first one cuz no story. loved burst limit but it had no trophies.

@gentou its funny because its true. i hate the way everyone on raging blast just use the same old super vegeta, bardock, goku, and piccolo. i wish people would have more variety. Like ive taken a shine to using android 16 who is quite good :D

Dude Tenkaichi 3 only had 97 characters the transformations don't count and I don't know why they had 2 have more than one version of Goku, Vegeta and anyone else just a waste of roster space in the end you will find yourself only using 20 percent or less of the roster

"More than 90 characters!"? What a joke... Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 for Wii & PS2 had over 120 and BT3 had more than 150!

@sora364 You put more effort into typing you posts than Namco put into repackaging this game. Hiyo!

@sora at the end of the day its a difference of opinions. you think it would be a waste of money to buy it. i dont. simple as that

lewymorry
lewymorry

@sora the fact i dont atall think im write and your wrong. youre the one writing full on essays on a website. if you look back i dont have my fangs drawn atall. i stated i think you should stop complaining on a website about a game no one is making you buy. oh and bragging that this game exists because of you is stupid too, because if it didnt exist, how could i be sad it didnt exists in the first place.

sora364
sora364

I have little interest in belaboring my point with you any further. Apparently, you possess that whiny "I'm right. You're wrong." mentality. This "debate" is meaningless, as you clearly have NO CLUE or the faintest empathy for those who, believe it or not, are THE REASON you can play this game. Yep, it's "My fault" this game even exists. Yes, millions of idiots like me who supported them since inception just because: "OMG! It's a Dragon Ball Game!" And as a veteran of this, I'm through. lewymorry, snowycomet, you both need to grow up and stop bickering at those who do not share the same opinion as you. This is the internet. Get over it.

2. Being a former "die hard" advocate of this series (Tenkaichi/Budokai) apparently MUCH longer than you means I have had a great deal more exposure to it. ...And somehow...I'm AT FAULT for finally wanting something different? Because I want this series to *evolve* and *advance* into a truly worthy Dragon Ball game that isn't rehashed effortless crap that we've already played 1000 times and slapped on a disc? Oh, yes. I'M the criminal, right? Your logic is broken beyond all repair. So, we should all be content with relishing in the same games repeatedly until Spike/Bamco goes out of business? Fine, settle for less if you want. Have fun giving them 60 dollars every year, knowing they will make an identical sequel with more characters, environments, and a presumably more crappy story mode. When RB2 hits shelves, your copy of RG1 will start collecting dust. When RG3 releases, guess who is so blindly defending RB2 right now is never going to look at it again?

sora364
sora364

@ lewymorry Listen, this is hardly beneficial to your perspective. At all. 1. Yes, it was my personal decision to purchase these games. That fact goes undisputed. Simultaneously, you my friend, are lunging at me with your claws and fangs drawn as if you yourself are comparable to me in this matter. In short: (since you undermine "big long fancy words" so much) I've BEEN THERE and DONE THAT. Guess who hasn't? You excoriating me is pointless when you don't have your facts straight. Saying it's "your fault" is barely admissible and can't even be taken seriously as a counter argument. I can do the same thing: "It's your fault for not buying the other games and not realizing it's cheapened, recycled garbage that we've been playing for years, and thus ignorant of my standpoint and have no right to assert your uneducated opinion of this on me." See what I did there? :)

lewymorry
lewymorry

also you said it yourself. it took you seven years to realise you're buying the exact same game over an over again. thats no ones fault but yours

lewymorry
lewymorry

@sora364 you're not aiding yourself by using big long fancy wors you know. and at the end of the day you say you have a right to complain, but who made the choice to buy each game every time? and like Snowycomet said. no one is making you buy the game, and i highly doubt the creators will take notice of any of people complaining.

sora364
sora364

@lewymorry. "Shut up?" "Stop complaining?" I love how you can be so blatantly rambunctious and self righteous when you don't have the slightest idea of what you are talking about. Listen to what you just said: "or even for people like me that has only ever had raging blast 1 and no other games." If I misconstrued your post, forgive me. But if that statement is true, I cannot possibly give your arguement any merit. Our experiences with DB games are as transparent as NIGHT and DAY. Polar opposites. I've played nearly every Dragon Ball game to release on the face of the planet(Yes, this includes Japanese only releases), limited only to arcade nuances. I have every RIGHT to vocalize my criticisms about what current developers/publishers are doing with the franchise. When I have been forking my money to these fiscal ravenous pigs for YEARS, I can do whatever the hell I want. I have been supporting Dragon Ball games since day 1, even importing classics such as Hyper Dimension. Please, don't make my complaining sound as if I loathe DB games, I DO NOT. What I dislike, is how developers are creating substandard sequels only by incorporating additional characters to the rosters and several insignificant graphical adjustments. It's the same substance only with slightly different presentation. Since this is apparently your 2nd Dragon Ball game, I don't expect you to understand. But all former hardcore DB game collectors will see where I'm coming from.

lewymorry
lewymorry

@sora364 or maybe you'll shut up and stop complaining. tweaking graphics might be reason enough to buy it for some people. or even for people like me that has only ever had raging blast 1 and no other games.

SnowyComet
SnowyComet

@sora364 Nobody's making you buy the game.

sora364
sora364

No. I refuse to purchase this. Ordinarily, I would have rushed to purchase any DBZ game without the slightest inkling of hesitation. When I was younger, I bought all three Budokais and all three Tenkaichis. Presently, I only play Budokai 3 and Tenkaichi 3. The aforementioned are just collecting dust. It took me seven full years to realize, but I have been buying the *exact* same ******* game repeatedly only with more characters. That is Bamco's marketing strategy, and I won't fall for it anymore. I can't possibly see how any one is hyped by any of the trailers. Really...they are recycling the *exact* same animations...the *exact* same movesets...but wait! They tweaked the graphics a bit and added 20+ characters they could have EASILY annexed in the original Raging Blast. All of a sudden, it's a "must buy" for half of you. I just...don't understand. If you want Dragon Ball games that aren't the complete total recycled garbage that you've been playing for the past 8 years, boycott. Maybe Bamco will realize that rehashing more of the same is more a detriment to them than a benefactor. We've supported them for years, and they insult our intelligence by making us buy the same damn game. Wake up and smell the coffee, people!

anime_gamer007

I wish for once, AT LEAST once, they would take 2-3 years, sit down and make a damn good DBZ game. This crap they're pushing out each year is insulting, how do they have the money to keep making these games? They can't sell that well especially since the last two were basically just HD remixes of the PS2 games. The closest thing to a true DBZ game is probably Tenkaichi 3, that was 3 years and nothing has improve. I guess they don't realize as your tools get better so does your standards.

I have a question? I use to have a playstation 2. I had all the dragon ball z games. but when i sold my playstation 2 and all of my games to get an xbox 360 and a playstation 3 i lost all of my dragon ball z games. When i got my xbox 360 i got dragon ball z burst limit. it was okey. i then later got raging blast which i thought was missing a lot of good things from previous games. in other words it sucked ass. should i get raging blast 2 when it comes out? or should i buy it and crack the disc in half. leave a comment.

You kno wat i dont think there doin it for the true DBZ fans anymore. Why?Because they put the show on nickoloen how ever you spell that garbage.. anyway it seems to me that they are targeting you real young generation because yes we all kno DBZ to its greatest Depth and they dont wanna listen. they kno the parents will buy their 6 to 12yr old a dbz game for a special occasion of some sort. So jus keep all the dbz games you got and dont buy anymore New DBZ games until they start Improving The End. jus get over the annoying load time in DBZBAR and be happy cuz in my opinion, they kept the style type of gameplay from DBZB3 and and improved it, it was awsome i just wish there were cut scenes and more characters lol

Transformations should be organized as well like having capsules to limit the transformations but so much like taking seven places for seven transformations in Budokai 3 which is annoying. Adventure Mode should also be 3d world like Naruto Ninja Storm where you can have platforming levels and fighting bosses and visiting Bulma or Master Roshi for example to get stronger or to simply fill up the stomach in Chi Chi house. It should also have flying mode and the world should at least 100 times bigger than the one featured in Budokai 3 with incredible details. We want an epic DBZ which we can do anything without having those annoying battle cutscenes. Oh Yeah the finishing cutscenes and special event cutscenes should be epic like Burst Limit but about 10 times better. If the developer can do everything I mentioned, I will buy that game 20 times. I promise. I know DBZ fans will agree and give the developer more ideas like I do.

khant1
khant1

charging up the super blast. The super blast should be epic like giving them a time to charge up and release to hit and then the opponent should have a number choices (strategies) to block, dodge or smash the blast right back to its user. Evade and dodging the combos like Budokai 3 (while tapping X) are very important since it is very annoying when the characters unleash an unstoppable combo and it is very annoying. Sonic Sway in Budokai Tenkaichi 3 was very annoying too. I like Budokai 3 dodging better. Again Evading by timing and pressing guard button should be included. I really recommend having a limited amount of Ki Level where you will charge up to use or but to use it wisely which means limiting the annoying unleashment of Kamehamehas all the time while the opponent is beaten. And also like transformations use Ki Levels. Even super saiyan 4 goku must give up to Super 17 when he used a lot of Ki power and Super 17 got considerably stronger than SS4. This is one of the example to have that Limiting Ki Mode. You could still charge but it is limited and it improves a lot of strategies. Basically SS4 Gogeta can charge up a huge Big Band Kamehameha while Kid Goku gets angry when he fire a few inches tall Kamehameha.

khant1
khant1

Hyper Mode or Aura Spark like in Burst Limit should be included beside Max Power Mode. Hyper Modes should be a quick strategy to unleash full power mode and increase a brickwall like in Infinite world however Max Power mode should be longer and increase even more power and use even more Ki which are available. Use original soundtracks like Vegeta Knows His Son in vegeta and buu battles. It would make it more fluid and kick the action. And let the players to use any soundtracks. Mass Destruction like how Universal Spirit Bomb cut through the whole sea after obliterating the whole Omega Shenron. Must include all the characters even Budo from Bojack Unbound and it should be about over 200 characters. However everybody should have unique epic skills and different combos and experience. Basically the game play mechanics should just inspire what had perfectly done before like Budokai 3, Infinite world cut scenes, Budokai Tenkaichi 2 and 3 character skills and super air combos. One really annoying thing is battle cut scenes and when opponent smashed you while charging up the super blast.

khant1

We all are tired of DBZ games. And i strongly believe that producers and bandai should do a original fighting game. I have all the DBZ games and instead they get better on each new version it happens exactly the opposite. Raging blast 1 is even worse than tenkaichi 1. Why they have guts to lauch this terrible game? DBZ developers, please, read these following comments! The formula is this: Keep the controls like tenkaichi 2, personalize each character - why have 1000 characters if they seem the same? - Change grab, punch and blasts for each character. Imput cut scenes like budokai series. Improve massive blasts... yes we want to cause huge destruction! Balance the characters powers. Like a weak character cannot kill a strong 4thlevel character without a huge effort - kicks and punch. Blasts must cause a lot damage but it must exist many ways of avoid and reflect them - like budokai. It couldexist more grab combos.. not just rotating and thrown. More incisive and violent sequences... The oozaru forms should have a complete different way of play and massive action. TRY something new... DBZ are not a kids game.. most ofthe fans have more than 25yo! Already charged Ki Level like when it run out the character completely out of power and useless and it forms a great strategy. Great Animated Long Cutscenes in the Adventure Mode like in Infinite World should not be missed out ever. Must have support items like Senzu Beans like in Budokai 3 which are yellow capsules.

I have to agree with "samwe",Budokai 3 and Tenkaichi 2 were easily the best DBZ games.I feel that the DBZ games are the same thing over and over, however I may get this having never played the Raging Blast Version. Anybody know if you fight from the rear of the character like Tenkaichi or if its that rubbish side view stuff?

nomailx
nomailx

I will only by this game if these questions are answered correctly: Did they fix the spam? (too easy use of rushing special attacks). Did they balanced characters? (everyone in RB was playing teen gohan, and goku. All other characters were useless). Did they fix the disconnection problem. (The ladder was so full of disconnectors that Gamespot did even wrote about it in it's review. Disc should be counted as a loss). Did they fix broken characters? (kid buu and gogeta and some other characters had unstopable combos. you just had to quit the match if u saw the combo started, since u had no chance to evade). Did they add the evade on square attack? (In DBZBT3 u were able to evade on any attack. In DBZ RB u can't evade not charged square attacks. U should). And finally did they fix the camera.

goku and all the crew were here... I just remember how amazing the story mode was... I mean wow the fact that they had the characters talking in the same time of the fight was just awesome... everything was here... but bandai had to go backwards... ask me why ? I'd say it's there marketing strategy to increase sales, and push people to buy their games... i think it's too bad. it's because of this strategy that i'm not willing to buy anymore dbz games. I have had enough dbz. for me the only 3 dbz games were budokai 1, budokai3, and the best one tenkaichi 3. STOP ! after that no more dbz games. I played raging blast and i got upset.I use to play DBZ everyday when i had the ps2, untill i bought the xbox and play burst limit, and the raging blast.. i bought these games, played them for one week, and now they're on my office... i just think they re boring.... sorry, and whoever tells me raging blast was good, please, play tenkaichi 3 first then we\ll talk. ENOUGH DBZ !!!!!ENOUGH MARKETING !!!! ENOUGH PROFITS ON DBZ FANS !!!!!!! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH !!!! YOU JUST DESTROYED THE FRANCHISE !!!!! YOU HAD A JEWEL IN YOU RE HANDS AND INSTEAD OF TAKING CARE OF IT YOU USE IT TO RIPP OFF FANS !!!!

samwe

no seriously this is it. stop ! please. the best dbz game was tenkaichi 3 and that's it. everytime bandai scores big they have to go backwards and bring 2 games that suck and the 3rd is just amazing. no stop it. enough, plus this is just like playing the same game over and over and over and over. it's not interesting anymore. tenkaichi 3 was a masterpiece in every meaning of the word. it was just it. crazy blasts/ combos in the hyper mode, mass destruction, amazing ultras, the transformations were just perfect, and the japanese version had the original soundtrack of dbz... I was going to cry the day I played that game... it was just too good. I had finally felt that I played DBZ. i felt the power of each characters. it was just too good to be real. the only downside of the game that I found (which are very minor details is that the cutscenes specially combat ones were really bad, because they felt like it was just robots having a pillow fights. the best cutscenes were in Budokai 1, but that's it ! that was the only weak point, but that was really minor because the soul was here. dbz was here.

yondaime3000
yondaime3000

bandai made tenkaichi 1 with the soul...and it was the best on the other hand namcobandai made the other parts with technology but no soul....and still tenkaichi 1 is the best
