Dragon Age character creator now live

Free utility will allow PC players to get a head start on BioWare's upcoming RPG, upload avatar to developer's new "social network."

by

With Dragon Age taking flight the first week of November, BioWare and Electronic Arts are giving prospective players a chance to tool around with the role-playing game's character creation process. A new Dragon Age: Origins Character Creator utility was made available to North American and European PC owners today from the game's official Web site.

Maybe a little makeup is in order.

As the name suggests, the Character Creator will allow players to build their own protagonist for the game, one they will be able to export into the full PC version of Dragon Age when it launches. Players will also be able to upload them to the BioWare Social Network, an online repository of user characters, blogs, screenshots, and forums.

This isn't the first time EA has hyped a game's release by giving players a sneak peek at its character creation tools. The publisher released Spore Creature Creator in advance of Will Wright's Spore, as a free download (with limited features) and as a $5 retail package.

Dragon Age: Origins ships on November 3 for the PC and Xbox 360 (November 6 in Europe), with the PlayStation 3 edition arriving later in the month. For more information on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

I'm rather disappointed with the Character Creator demo, and not only because you can't do anything with the character right away. The body types look wrong, no matter what gender or race you choose, and you can't select a body build. If you want your character to be skinny, nimble rogue or a muscled warrior, you can't do it, because they all look the same. Also, the rules system seems really similar to DnD, which is a Bad Thing. I had high hopes for the game, but this "demo" knocked them down a notch. Still, I really, really hope I'm wrong, and the game will be similar to Baldur's Gate or Mass Effect in depth.

Anybody else have problems getting the damned thing to work? I tried it from the official site as well as Atomic Gamer and Fileplanet and all three times gave me errors opening up the files to install the creator.

Dexterity typically refers to nimbleness and coordination. Perhaps they are fast but not nimble?

Faces are definitely prettier here than in Mass Effect. Agree with previous comments about arm proportion, though. Also, am I the only one who thinks it's weird that Elves are the only race that DOESN'T get a dexterity bonus?

I agree that people who cry about PC compatability issues have no clue what they are doing ona computer beyond surfing the internet... i have Vista 64- Bit ultimate... love it never had a problem with it, thats because i downloaded the correct drivers for all of my hardware. also PC building is more of an Art than it is for just sheer gaming, gaming power is just the bonus we get for giving life to a god like rig. i disagree with having a PC connected to a TV though i have a full HDTV and i would much rather run my games on my 24" widescreen Acer @ 1900 x 1200. refresh rate is 2 ms ... although the new LCD tvs are amazing just really expensive

video is cool - "free utility" is kind of worthless - you get to create and upload your character? - it takes about 1 minute - and then you can't do anything with it - a playable demo would be a much better present...

Character creation is decent, not super special, but just decent. It allows you to create a reasonably unique character. I'm just hoping for mod support in the future so this can be expanded like in Oblivion etc. The arm/leg ratio looks a bit off on first glance, but it's actually not too unrealistic (the way they stand makes it look worse imo).

Am I seriously the only one who thinks these character models look beyond awful? You can make a decent looking face, but then you have to endure the hideous hands and feet (Seriously, clown-sized, I'm not kidding. Look at the mage), the absurdly long arms and shortened legs--hey, Bioware 3D modeler, here's a protip: arms are not longer than legs--and the bland and lifeless looking poses. I understand being loyal to Bioware. They are awesome. I love them. I have preo-ordered this game and I'm sure the rp elements and story-line are going to be fantastic...but is it unreasonable to expect that the 3D models conform somewhat to anatomical standards!? These models are so freaking bad. For god's sake. Also, to the person who thought the blood looked so cooool...it looks ridiculous. It looks retarded. It looks like pixelated chickenpox spattered on every surface. I think they came up with that to try and hide how horrible the modeling was.

I think the lack of options has to do with the DLC plans for Dragon Age. There's going to be a lot of content coming - I bet that packages that add more styles of hair and so forth to the creator will show up soon.

@AllHailTheSith what i really wanted to say is, even if they announced it 5 years ago, but started development 3 years ago, it's a long time to make a good game..

@Chronikas I don't think that anybody would say that consoles are more powerful than a top tier PC. It is just annoying when people talk about their rig and then say that consoles have no redeeming qualities. (exclusives, PRICE, different styles of games, etc.) Now to the real point. After reading some of the comments there seems to be a common thread here. The customization is serviceable but not great. I think that if you are going to release a part of your game early then you should only do so if it is amazing. Granted that most of the people that downloaded this already plan on getting the game, but it just doesn't make much sense to release a part of your game unless it is pretty amazing.

i was pretty disappointed with the limited hair styles and no clothing options but this game will be good i know it.

I was rather disappointed in the lack of customization options. It is a bioware game though, and i know this game is going to be great.

Demons Souls looks awesome, I wish I had a PS3 for it. The character creation is awful on Dragon Age. You barely get any options. It's about on par with Mass Effect, except I didn't expect much going into ME, since it was Sci-Fi and all. Why do you only get like eight hair colors, five complexions, and twelve hair styles for each GENDER (not race)? That's.. a pathetic amount of customization.. and to think I thought Oblivion was sparse when it came out. What do RPGs have against letting you actually customize your characters these days?

I thought we'd at least get to see some opening cutscenes featuring our character. Too much to hope for. I enjoyed the Spore Creature Creator much more, but hey this was a nice look at the skills and graphics.

Sorry guys, even though he is being a total douche I have to agree with earlthecannibal to some extent. From a sheer performance standpoint, PCs completely dominate the field. Some people complain about compatibility issues and whatnot but I think most of that has to do with your intelligence and technological knowledge. The only benefit I get from consoles are exclusives. Some great games for sure, but I would enjoy those exclusives much more if they looked nearly as good on my TV as their pc counterparts. Having a strong PC hooked up to a nice TV certainly nice to have, but as you can see we're not all dicks about it like earl.

Great in-depth customization, gives even more manoeuvrability then oblivion's character creator witch was awesome, and juicy sneak-peek at skills and abilities, can't wait to play this game!!!

@ Vasot I think that should be your opinion because i checked your Home Page and recent Reviews and you rated - KILL ZONE :7.5 ASSASSINS CREED :7.0 METAL GEAR SOLID 4"GUNS OF THE PATROIT" :7.5 GRAND THEFT AUTO IV :8.0 BIOSHOCK :7.5 I haven't seen anyone rate Metal Gear Solid 4:Guns of the Patroit a 7.5 ever since it was released...... Nothing is wrong with Demon Souls,....i believe your Opinion shows your Taste and Preference which i can't really understand.

ya demon's souls is such a good game im glad i bought it. what makes it so awsome is the fact it is really hard and provides you the challenge. Dragon age is going to be awsome as well but i dont think its going to be very challenging.

MNBeta03

@Vasot Demon's Souls is sweet. It got a unique and innovative game concept and there is no other RPG like it. It does take more patience than most games as there is little instant gratification. I find it totally addictive. My only critisism is the level are a little too linear. That said, it doesn't mean I wont get Dragon Age. In fact I said I'm pretty certain I will... it just a matter of when. If I wait 9 months and save $50 on DLC it might be worth it... assuming the other games can keep me busy.

Vasot

@MNBeta03...forget that trash Demon Souls !!! DRAGON AGE ORIGINS WILL BE THE BEST RPG OF THE YEAR !! :D

MNBeta03
MNBeta03

I will probably end up getting this game eventually. I'm trying to decide if the pre-order bonuses are worth it. I just got Demon's Souls and I think that it will keep me busy for a while... plus if there is any chance this finds itself in a GOY edition in 9-12 months... I think there are enough good games on the horizon, I may be able to hold out. Tough to decide!

Why do you always say, Oh Gamespot, that the 360 and PC versions drop November 3rd, then follow that immediately with "the PS3 version comes out sometime later that month"? We also have a release date, for anyone who doesn't already know: November 17th. Stop hating!! But back on topic, I'd love to be able to create and import a character on the console version...

Most games looks great from the adverts, traillers, teasers, demos, interviews and previews we get from various Media. But after purchase,....we sometimes get this "After-Purchase Dissapointment". Because, maybe the game didn't draw us in as we expected like in Fable 2,Prototype,Resident evil 5,Quantum of solace,Need for Speed undercover(not even close to mostwanted),etc. This games didn't live up to the hype from the various Media. So we get dissapointed and wish we had used the money for a game like the upcomming Assassins Creed 2 and Heavy Rain:The origami Killer. I have gotten this "After-purchase dissapointments" alot and i don't normally complete or end those games that didn't live up to my expectation or the Hype made by the various media houses. Also,i don't sell my games after purchase,i keep them as collections,.....so am very carefull about what i buy now,i don't want to make further mistakes concerning my collection. It's also not easy getting the money to get every good game upon release.

Character creator wasn't that in depth, but serviceable, I was hoping to be able to fiddle around more with skills, but that comes with leveling I guess. Looking forward to making a city elf rogue. The initial storyline seems rather interesting.

shawn_mitchel

Game Informer rated this a 9.0, i don't know if it's over rated..... So am waiting for Game spot Editors to rate this game, then i could finally make my decision about buying it or not. If it doesn't make a 9.0 or above when Gamespot rates it,.....i'll have to stick with my Elders Scrolls IV :Oblivion. My reason is that i've got Fifa 10,Demon souls,Uncharted 2 and the upcoming Assassins Creed 2 to get for this year,.........And i've not even got my Gears of war 2 yet ! Just my PREFERENCE,......am not saying Dragon Age would be terrible and not good for purchasing if it gets a Review of 8.5.

And what a rip-off that was. A pay demo. What was sad about that is it was the only moderately enjoyable part of the game. I could have saved $55 and just bought the creature creator.

Balaji1212

I expected it to have much more depth than this,it just took me a few min to create my character, add to that there being no ability to change your body shape and even with the face i wasn't able to do much at all. Off to a disappointing start,i am afraid.

dammit the sooner I get a purpose built gaming PC built this month the better ON THE OTHER HAND Only a couple of week until the full game is available

I think that's the point, fubbal. They don't want us to have to spend 10+ minutes trying to get a character we like the look of. (Oblivion, anyone?) Which isn't to say that you can't spend more time getting the look of your character perfect. That said, I confess, some ability to change the body type of your character would have been nice, but I'm not going to be too upset about it. As for character abilities and special attacks, there's a fair bit of customizability there, it's just not immediately available.

fubbal

I know i'm asking for it here but still its not as robust as I would like it.The most robust part of it is messing with the face and portrait of your character.I had a feeling it would be like this. Why did this generation do away with all the depth ?It took me maybe like 2-3 minutes to make my guy.
