Doom's Last Expansion Arrives Early, Adds New Maps, Demon, and Grenade Launcher

Bloodfall, the third and final expansion for id Software's Doom, launched today for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. This is ahead of schedule; Bethesda said it's in the festive spirit so it launched the content early as a holiday gift of sorts.

The expansion, which is included with Doom's $40 season pass or can be bought for $15 on its own, adds three new maps, a new grenade launcher, another Demon, and the Cultist armor set.

The new maps are called Empyrian, Boneyard, and Outbreak; here are their official descriptions:

  • Empyrian – Fight in an ageless colosseum held aloft by opposing energies, as the gilded battlements slowly crumble
  • Boneyard – Battle in the outer realm of Hell, where the landscape is made entirely of demon flesh, teeth, and bone
  • Outbreak – Engage in intense combat throughout a UAC facility transformed after underworldly science breaks free from containment

The grenade launcher can bank grenades off walls, while its secondary fire is a smoke grenade that you can use to stay out of sight. The new demon is called Spectre Pinky. "As the fast and heavily armored Pinky demon with Spectre abilities, stalk your enemies with invisibility, or bull rush to insta-gib all in your path," Bethesda said.

Bloodfall also adds new hack modules that include the following:

  • Extra Protection
  • Gain Extra Armor per Health Pickup
  • Augmented Healing
  • Gain Extra Health per Health Pickup
  • Glory Sight
  • Highlight enemies that can be Glory Killed from farther away

There is also new equipment in the form of lateral thrusters that provide a quick boost to your movement to help stay out of your enemy's crosshairs. Finally, there are 15 new customization patterns and colors added with the Bloodfall update. Here's a look at some of what's available:

A double XP weekend event has kicked off to celebrate Bloodfall's release. Players will be doubly rewarded in multiplayer now through Monday, December 19 at 12 PM ET.

Doom's two previous paid expansions are Unto the Evil and Hell Followed. id Software has supported the game with free updates, too, including a recent one that lets you play against bots.
