Doom 4 developer responds to leaked images

id Software design director Matthew Hooper says images have "nothing to do" with what gamers will find in upcoming shooter.

The pile of supposed Doom 4 artwork posted earlier this week is not representative of the developer's new shooter, id Software has confirmed.

Hooper says this shot has "nothing to do" with Doom 4.

Today, id Software design director Matthew Hooper took to Twitter to respond to the artwork. He did not directly refute the authenticity of the images but noted they don't represent what gamers will find in Doom 4.

"Those images have nothing to do with what you're gonna see in Doom 4," he said.

Accompanying the images was a rumor that Doom 4 had been cancelled. Parent publisher Bethesda debunked this speculation, saying, "Doom 4 is not cancelled. When we are ready to talk about it, we'll let folks know."

That wasn't the first time Doom 4 was rumored to be shut down. Last October, word spread that Doom 4 was "indefinitely postponed," but Bethesda was quick to quiet that talk, saying, "Games are done when they are done, and no title under development at id has been postponed--indefinitely or otherwise."

As for Doom 4, the game's existence was first acknowledged in May 2008, when the developer sent out a press release stating that production had begun on the game. At the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo, id Software head of technology John Carmack said the core team on Rage would move to Doom 4 development following the release of its latest shooter. He also said a sequel to Rage was planned to launch after Doom 4.

Only one way to know what the next game is going to be like and that's play it your self. It can't be as boring as reading all these whinging posts about Rage.

note to id: check the doom wads and learn why doom was able to stick around for so long .Keep what woks and throw away all the flash ... We want game-play..... A screen shot is just a screen shot ..and please don't leak images again ! Just show us what the game is really about. Back to basics still works nobody did it like u , don't think anybody can !

If it's by the Rage team, they should just cancel it now. Let's just leave it at Doom 3, which I thought was pretty damn good. Rage though, was a bitter disappointment. If the Rage devs create Doom 4, they're just gonna ruin the franchise. Lately I played through Wolfenstein (2009) - that uses id Tech 4 and looks better and plays better than Rage.

My demon senses are tingling... This game will be epic. Just hope I don't get bad texture pop. Aside from that, idTech5 seems to do amazing things.

Rage is the nuts, still can't bind numpad 5 but other than that I think it's awesome and can't wait to see what ID have up the sleeve for future games

i remember an interview saying since people were talking so bad about Rage and were so unimpressed by it that they may just not release Doom 4. the way it was phrased though seemed more like, "fine you wanna talk sh*t, we'll take away Doom 4." by the way, after fixes Rage is one of the best modern games. i just started a new game last week and it's even better than i remembered.

Better hope it's better than Doom 3. That game was a snoozefest.

In Doom 3 it was freakin 2145, we had space bases in Mars and we couldn't make a good night-vision goggles. Just kidding, but still sometimes the pitch black got to your nerves a bit and not in a good way. Anyway, I hope Doom 4 will have the same chilling "atmosphere" as Doom 3. Though, I don't see it coming out any time soon.

I thought I heard a rumor that Doom 4 was a remake of Doom 2 (like how Doom 3 was a remake of Doom1) and honestly this looks like hell on Earth.

Just do us, the gamers, a favor and focus more on story/gameplay than graphics, ok? Please? I'm tired of seeing flashy games with no substance in them.

I like Id games a lot even rage which in my opinion was there weakest effort. If given enough time doom 4 will be a fantastic game. also please market and release the game in proper fashion i mean when you put a game like rage in the ring with battlefield, cod and skyrim what do you think is going to happen.

as long as its not rushed its gonna be a good game hopefully id doesnt try to put new things into it just leave doom the way it is and doom 4 is gonna be good would be awesome to get doom 1 free for download with buying this game but hey im adding something that wont happen keeping my fingers crossed

If it's typical DOOM style of FPS it's way outdated. Running around maze like levels, get key, open door, get key, open door, Boss fight...etc I won't be buying it. I could barely last through 3. I think they should just throw in the towel. Or at least make a freakin gun with a flashlight on it!

What happened to id software? They have Doom and Quake. 2 what use to be staples of PC gaming! I remember when Quake 3 came out and it was HUGE! That was THE game to get and after that poof id is gone. What happened? Unreal Tournamet and Quake were the pillars of PC gaming back in the day. Unreal Tournament fell a bit but atleast we they have Unreal Engine. Boy PC gaming has changed big time in the last 10 years

@Lazy_Marine Your not kidding... Those were the days. That time was a huge push in graphics and Doom 3 and Half Life 2 were the games to do it. It would be interesting to see how much of a spike in gaming computer sales there were in that time. I remember dragging my mom to the mall saying I needed a new computer for college. Ha, dupped her into getting me a $500 graphics card. Ha! Those were the days... when PC actually had exclusives.

@thewastedyouth you went to hell only in the stage HELL....retrieved the soul cube, that betruger had hid in HELL with that guardian......then you came out of the hell...and went looking for the HELL OPENING or PORTAL or HELL GATE (which could only be closed by the cube)...that was like a giant teleporting gate that linked hell to mars protected by that last minotaur with launchers kinda boss. The rocket launchers and stuff never belonged to hell people...they probably borrowed it from Mars and attached to their asses.....true hell being was that fatass hell knight.....I still remember, bastard scared the **** outta me the first time i had to fight it......*goose bumps* The game was epic....haters gonna hate, but the game kicked serious ass!! there's a reason we're still talking about it! there'll never be another doom 3 *sigh*

i loved Doom 3 , any long time PC gamer will remember the revolution it created for the gaming world upon its release, especially in graphics & physics technology. Carmack was the first to push the limits, and pretty much everyone was shelling out $1000+ to upgrade their systems. Those were good days :P . Despite the bad press doom3 received i do think it was a masterpiece, and I do hope Doom4 comes out soon and not later, with another major technology push by Carmack.

@inaka_rob - I liked the feel of Doom 1 & 2. Doom 3 I didn't like the feel to and because it's sole purpose was to teleport monsters behind you to scare you. The game went on...and on...and on...I just wanted the game to end. The mods did help it later though... I agree, ahead in terms of graphics and models, but not in gameplay. The gameplay spoiled Doom 3 for me. Sorry about the Quake 4 reference, forgot Raven Software did that one. :)

@Elann2008 Everything you said is a matter of opinion. Doom 4 is not vaporware. It will be released, eventually. Rage was NOT bad. I'm not saying it was incredible but I may go as far to say it was "great". It was more of a tech demo. id Software was hard at work on the tech 5 engine while developing the game so it is understandable that it would be incomplete. Yes, it shouldn't have been priced $60 at launch in that case, but that's what rentals are for.

Elann2008
Elann2008

Also, at this point, Doom 4 to me is vaporware. I don't like it when these games go in limbo and take YEARS to develop and finish. And then the developer is like "Here you go!" after 5+ years. A game in development for that long USUALLY spells trouble. I couldn't care less. There are far more interesting and better games that have come out and are going to come out in 2012 to even pay attention to the mess that was Rage, and whatever this Doom 4 game will be like..

Elann2008
Elann2008

Rage was nothing like Borderlands.. If it was anything like Borderlands, it would have been good... Rage was a huge disappointment. Sales reflected it, and many professional and user based opinions also disliked the game for many reasons. Rage was boring, it had horrible pacing, and the characters you encountered were uninteresting, to say the least. There wasn't a singular aspect about the game that drew me into the game deeper. The combat and gunplay, although solid, was nothing special, that had been done many years ago, and done better than Rage. Not a horrible game, just not worth $20, 30, 40, 50, or 60..

nate3031
nate3031

rage was way too much like borderlands I thought. sure it had its perks and what not, but too many developers out there focus too hard on copy cat ideas for any new FPS these times, and I for one simply dont dig the whole cartoonish concept. doom 3 for the xbox and pc had its own realism and interactive content that had me hooked for hours, cheats or not. ID completely screwed up duke, man I hope they dont do the same for D4. and please dont let renimax or obsidian team it either, cuz it just wouldnt be Doom, least at its roots anyway. just my opinion though.

So another 3-4yrs for a Rage, at the earliest sequel? That game had such potential, buccomatic seemed to cover all the good and bad of that game.

RO-nIn187

i hope it will be "better" than rage... i loved rage as long as i played it but i hated it after that weak ending... and i hope that doom 4 will have some good bosses, rage had only one and that one was way too easy!

id is finished as far as I'm concerned. Doom 3 was the last id in-studio production worth its salt. When Rage first came out all I wanted to do is cry as the LOD started popping in. Now we are stuck only with Valve. Its a shame their games all feel and play exactly the same. That's alright with me, though. Valve started out with an acceptable formula and they still play test on PC. If you are looking for FPS with an older feel, try out Hard Reset. The cut scenes are almost unbearably stupid (thank you Poland) , but it is a really amazing thing to play through. My heart almost stopped when I saw I had a health bar for the first time. warning : does contain Steam cancer

@d-rtyboy - Personally, I didn't like Duke Nukem because I found it to be terrible. It was a chore just to get through the demo. I can somewhat see your point though. I'm all for old school feel but I don't want old school flaws. Not everything about old school games was great. My memories, in many cases, far outshine the reality of actually playing some old games. Duke Nukem however, seemed to blend flaws from every school of gaming.
