During TGS 2016, Koei Tecmo showed off new gameplay from Nioh, it's upcoming Dark Souls-like action game. During a stream, company president Yoichi Erikawa sliced and diced his way through a spider-infested area of the game, offering a look at some of the samurai skills and abilities players will have at their disposal.

The gameplay session culminates in a fight with a Yokai called Jorogumo. According to Japanese mythology, Jorogumo is a giant spider that can change into the form of a woman. In Nioh, however, it doesn't do much shape-shifting, and is instead a part-woman, mostly-spider monstrosity. Naturally, Erikawa doesn't last very long.

Koei Tecmo has confirmed the Nioh release date as February 9, 2017 for the PlayStation 4. The news was also revealed at Tokyo Game Show. A beta for the game was completed recently, with developers Team Ninja implementing feedback from fans into the final game.

Nioh follows William Adams, a man that journeys to Japan to become a samurai.

"Players will discover a deep and enticing world that blends history and Japanese folklore. The tough gameplay pits players against daunting and overpowering creatures, and encourages them to learn their enemies’ tactics to gain the advantage in battle," Team Ninja has said about the game.

"The protagonist, William, is not alone against the perilous Yokai, as he will be accompanied by a diverse cast of characters who will aid him on his travels across Japan. Hanzo Hattori, the head of a famous ninja clan, is William’s guide through the country. Ginchiyo Tachibana (wife of Muneshige, the head of the Tachibana clan) will also help William on his quest with her skilled fighting abilities."
