Donkey Kong, Pikmin Super Mario Galaxy 2 cameos nixed

Shigeru Miyamoto shot down guest appearances from iconic Nintendo characters in plaformer sequel, saying they did not have a "functional reason" to be included.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 might have included a supporting cast of iconic Nintendo characters, but legendary designer Shigeru Miyamoto wanted none of it.

Yoshi was a good fit for Super Mario Galaxy 2.

Speaking to Side Mission, Super Mario Galaxy 2 director Koichi Hayashida said Donkey Kong and Pikmin cameos were suggested for inclusion in the game, but ultimately, Miyamoto said these characters were a mismatch for the title.

"We presented this to Mr. Miyamoto, but he came down pretty hard, saying that there has to be a functional reason to include characters of a certain type in a game," he said.

Hayashida did not elaborate as to why Donkey Kong was scrubbed from Super Mario Galaxy 2, but as for Pikmin, he said the decision was made in regard to the characters' body type.

"In the Pikmin games, you'll notice that all the Pikmin are very thin--tall and narrow for their frame," Hayashida said. "Mario enemies tend to be on the short and squat side, and there's a functional reason for that. They're easier to stomp on. They're lower so you can get above them and broader so you can land on them. In that sense, Pikmin are just not well suited for the Mario universe."

Super Mario Galaxy 2 shipped in 2010 to a warm critical reception. For more on the title, check out GameSpot's review.

Would have been nice easter eggs. :-)

I don't recall any cameos in any other main Mario games, so why bother now?

There could always be a cameo for Super Mario Galaxy 3. Just think of a logical functional reason for them

Slightly off subject, but I'm not sure if anyone noticed the Pikmin cameo in the Mario Golf game for the Gamecube. At the course in front of Peach's castle, the last one, when you hit the ball into the flowers on the side of the course, sometimes you hear the Pikmin make a sad or scared sound, and several of them go flying through the air. I thought it was cool to see them there, since I liked them so much.

He has a point. Pikmin probably wouldn't have been a good fit in a Super Mario platformer and it wouldn't make too much business sense. The only times I understood cameos in games are like when Sonic was in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It makes sense because Sonic is mostly on Nintendo systems (and does well there too, unlike some other third party series) and he used to be Mario's rival. Also in the GameCube era when Nintendo worked with Namco for allowing Link in Soul Calibur II.

@JimmeyBurrows Sega makes the 'mario & sonic at the olympic games' games

Yet it didn't stop him putting a fat plumber in the olympics... Clearly sound thinking.

@Sepewrath Yeah! The game is great! I have it. I just don't see why a few pikmins couldn't appear somewhere in the "spaceship" as a cameo. They didn't need to be there to be stomped on. That's why I said the explanation was BS. Still, I don't think they needed to be there. Where can I see the interview with Hayashida?

Can't wait for Super Mario HD on Wii U! Cameos would have been a nice easter egg btw!

Pikmin wouldn't of worked in Mario Galaxy 2. But Donkey Kong definitely could've worked because Mario and Donkey Kong exist in the same universe. Pikmin doesn't exist in the same universe as Mario and Donkey Kong except for in the Super Smash Bros. series.

Why is this important enough to need to be discussed...sounds more like random useless trivia if anything

Super Mario Galaxy 2 is an excellent game. These cameos did not have to be in it.

This was probably the best game this generation. The variety you can find a single level was insane. @mled You would be surprised how little decisions have a great effect on a game. There is a recent interview with Hayashida up, you should check it out and see how they put a lot of thought into seemingly miniscule decisions like that, because the concept encompasses something much larger.

Don't really care about this guy is talking about, but the last DK game was one of the greatest game I ever play (Donkey Kong Returns) better and harder than mario all the way ...

I don't think pikmin should be in Mario (even though they appear in the golf game). But Hayashida's explanation is BS! They didn't need to be enemies to be there...

I think the line was already crossed when they brought Mario into outer space; why can't DK be there for some minor, irrelevant reason? And he really thought Olimar to be out of place in Mario's adventure in space?? lol Or if they're referring to just the Pikmin, I'm sure they could have fit them in, in like a single spot. A group of lost Pikmin who are waiting for their "Commander" to come pick them up?!

lol he's an astronaut, couldn't they have fit him somewhere in there?? Even DK, if they developed some sort of minor backstory that explains their being there.

That's interesting news. I think DK may have fit since Mario got his start in a Donkey Kong game. Pikmin, though? Not so much.

You know... people say that this is a Mario Game... but back in the day Kong and Mario were old rivals. I could EASILY see that and be amused by something similiar. Imagine Donkey Kong like levels in 3D... that would be amusing. Say Bowser brainwashed Donkey Kong or something.. it would work. Pikmin... yea, those don't belong IMO.

I like easter eggs as much as the next guy, but at least they didn't include them just because they could.

I agree, this game isn't meant to be a collaboration. Leave that stuff for Mario Parties and Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, etc. This was a MARIO game
