Donkey Kong Country Returns coming to 3DS

New version of 2010 Wii platformer arriving for portable this summer in North America and Europe.

Donkey Kong Country Returns is making a comeback. Today during a Nintendo Direct video presentation, Nintendo announced Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D for a launch on the 3DS this summer in North America and Europe.

A 3D video of Donkey Kong Country Returns is available to download now in the 3DS eShop.

The game originally launched for the Wii in November 2010 behind a positive critical reception. It was developed by Retro Studios and sold nearly 5 million units as of April 2011.

Other highlights of Nintendo's presentation today included the 3DS game Animal Crossing: New Leaf receiving a June release date and the announcement of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. Check back later for more news and announcements from Nintendo Direct.

It's awesome that Donkey Kong is being made for the 3ds! I do wish that the original SNES version could be made for it as well, but either way, it's such a fun game and I'm excited to take it places!! =D

Imagine a new Star Tropics in the vein of Uncharted. That would work, people will cry rip-off, but Star Tropics did archaeological puzzle like Zelda games way before, lol.

DKC:R was a good game, but Nintendo and Retro had over 2.5 years to do a completely new game. Not worth the full price of admission in my opinion. I don't want to see a series milked and a new one year after year. This is evident with the way shooters are now plus the Mega man formula from the NES days, they lost interest with each new game as they were becoming stale. Not bad games, but no innovations. That or revive some other franchises. Not to beat a dead horse, but EarthBound nor the other two games in the Mother series have been released yet (not holding my breath) and what about Star Tropics? Variety is what keeps games fresh, both innovating in a series and giving them a break every now and then. With their current practice of over-saturating the market with Mario, Zelda, Kirby, etc. It was nice to play a new Pilotwings game in 2011, would be nice to have a new Star Fox, F-Zero, Advance Wars game. I like their main series, but it gets kinda dull playing the same games over and over. Would like to see some variety in the line up. Sorry for the novel, but just my 2 cents.

ah yes Nintendo is good for making remakes for every thing they made and resell them in full pop.

I'm a little disappointed it's not a donkey kong 64 remake instead simply because even though I absolutely hated that the Wii dkcr forced you to use motion controls the game was just too damn good not to play because of that. I did everything to do in the game and have no desire to do all of that over again. This is still awesome news for people who haven't played dkcr though.

supermarioooooo

why in these days nintendo tries to make money from remakes??

we all know this game from wii.. JUST CREATE A NEW GAME.. İN THİS WAY (REMAKES) YOU DEVALUE 3DS!!!

I would rather prefer an original game, but this game was still epic and I only played through it once on the wii due to the difficulty XD but I bet it will be great on the 3ds and I have been wanting to re buy it for the wii since I sold it awhile back.. now I can wait for this version :) in 3d!

ADO300

this is so fucking lame xD why didn't they think about doing a remake of the original DKC trilogy or a remake of donkey kong 64, if people who want to play DKC:R just buy a wii or wii-u and play it there.... but since this is nintendo it will sell well, and i also might pick this one up if the 3D will work well

Sakarnen

Not that I'm necessarily complaining, but wouldn't the audience for this (people who own 3ds's and don't own wiis) be very, very narrow? I suppose this would work, but I don't see much of a point

Still haven't played this. Sort of glad as the 3ds version will rid itself of the pointless waggle.

Is it a new DKC or just a port of DKC:R?

Meta-Gnostic

And still Nintendo gives no explanation for why DKC 1-3 were removed from the Virtual Console. Was it so they could milk DKC Returns on 3DS?

Why would they waste their time with this. The Wii U needs games NOW and they just aren't making them.

I love Nintendo, I really do. But do I really wanna buy a port of a game that I can still play?

I was hoping for something more like "Donkey Kong Land Returns", like they did when the original DKC trilogy was being released.  I'm kind of tired of buying games that just get ported to portables later on, and hyped up like it's a super big deal.  Cool, it's in 3D now, and on a portable.  Who cares?

EasyComeEasyGo
EasyComeEasyGo

I never play Donkey Kong Return because I didn't own a Wii but since I have a 3DS XL now I can see what have I been missing. Honestly I wish Donkey Kong Country 2 Diddy Kong Quest would get the same treatment on 3DS.

Tsuchikage
Tsuchikage

I was kind of hoping for an all-new Donkey Kong Country game on 3DS, but Donkey Kong Country Returns is the best 2D platformer out there so it's not that big a deal.  The Wii's best game is soon going to be portable!

So a port is immediately a rehash now? I don't see how many versions of DKCR we had since the original on Wii.

leeko_link

@Meta-Gnostic

It could also be reference conflicts, some of the DKC games on Super NES had reference or cameos from other Rare games on them like Banjo-Kazooie, Killer Instinct, and Perfect Dark. There's also reference to other 3rd party mascots like Earthworm Jim, Frogger, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Clay Fighter. The "Nuts 'N' Bolts" song in DKC3 was probably another reason why it was taken down, Microsoft trademarked the Banjo-Kazooie title "Nuts 'N' Bolts" so Nintendo had to take down the game due to that reference.

thetravman

@Meta-Gnostic I imagine it has something to do with Rare. I wondered why there were in there in the first place since none of the other Rare titles made an appearance. Shame, cause half of the good games on N64 were made by them.

@ziproy

You were probably the few who missed Nintendo's last Nintendo Direct. If you had notice Wind Waker HD, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, a new yarn Yoshi game, a new RPG by Monolith, and Shin Megami Tensei X Fire Emblem are all coming to Wii U. We already got our Wii U news, not to mention we got a few with the ones on this Valentines Day too.

superbuuman

@ziproy They rushed the WiiU out, & they're paying for it. Expect a price cut soon.

The_Dragon_Born
The_Dragon_Born

@ziproy They have a lot of Wii U games in the pipeline but they take time. They thought the Wii U would sell better than it is and 3rd parties would fill in the gaps better than they are currently...its a race to catch up. Where as the 3ds now hitting its stride

The_Dragon_Born
The_Dragon_Born

@firstclassgamer I tried it on the wii and didn't make it past the first world because I couldn't hack the wii controls. I really like my 3ds and the DKC series so I'm excited to give it another go on 3ds.

@Seis_Siete they did say they built the game from the ground just for nintendo 3ds, but its still not a new game though

@superbuuman @ziproy Actually it is the other way around the Wii U is about 3 years late. They waited too long and the momentum from the Wii completely died then they release a new Wii. They should have released a "Wii HD" in 2010 with out the gamepad just a power boost(over the current Wii U) and Wii motion plus.

@The_Dragon_Born the game is satisfying first run through is pretty challenging but worth every penny I stil miss King K. Rool as the antagonist

@chipwithdip @alenth You gotta be shitting me.

Most shooters are different from the last, NEW characters, NEW story lines. Not ALL, but most. (Except for COD, and other similar titles.)

And if that wasn't enough, you can vary it with RPG's, and all the other genres that have NEW characters and NEW storylines.

Why do I make emphasis on NEW?

Because I really doubt that you Nintendo maggots know that word.

Same characters, same stories year after year.

LOL

Good deal. I'm not mad they're doing a port since I never played the other. Too bad about K Rool. He'd have made it feel more genuine like old times with Rare.

@RetroGaming1990  Most of the Nintendo games actually have good writing though, so it doesn't matter if they reuse characters.  Shooters are known for terrible stories and generic, stereotypical characters...

For the record, I like all systems and almost all genres.. why always the hate!?

alenth

@chipwithdip @alenth who the hell is talking about microsoft? you think all gamers that don't play on nintendo platforms only play on X360 and only play shooters all the time? try again.

chipwithdip

@alenth @chipwithdip You said Nintendo does nothing but games involving classic chars, I'm saying Microsoft does nothing but shooters. Funny thing is that doing nothing but shooters gives less variety anyway.

@hitman047m4 @alenth Nice to hear reasonable comments in a good manner, i wasn't a good example this time, i was kidding anyways, i am going to get this game, tried DK on the WII and i think it was a fun challenge, i'm getting this game on time, and of course you are right about that, just my own taste i think is good to have options for everyone.

hitman047m4
hitman047m4

@alenth No offense but I think you were looking for some kind of reaction with your original comment.... and I guess you found it.

Not hard to get those reactions with comments like yours... but anyways, like I said before, not all Mario games are the same. Just because Nintendo adds the name to the game does not means it is just another Mario game ;).

your comment would have made more sense if you wrote it like the following:

Mario Kart, Zelda Top Down, Mario Tennis, Zelda 3D, Mario Golf, DKC N, Mario 2D, Pokemon N, Mario 3D, Kirby N, Mario Puzzler, Yoshi N, and so on.

And on top of that, there are more games than just "the Mario games" (or the franchises you mention) on the Nintendo platforms. But I guess people only see what they want to see.
