Doctor Lautrec makes appointment with 3DS

Konami bringing new puzzle adventure game to Nintendo's newest handheld in Europe and North America this summer.

Professor Layton is already set for a showdown with Phoenix Wright, but the logic-loving academic is due for a little more competition, courtesy of Konami. The publisher today announced that it will launch a 3DS puzzle adventure game starring its own keen-minded advanced-degree holder this summer.

Academic mystery-solvers are all the rage on the 3DS.

Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights will introduce Jean-Pierre Lautrec, doctor of archeology, and his student assistant, Sophie Coubertin. Set in Paris during the late 1800s, the game will follow Lautrec and Sophie as they search for the lost treasure of Louis XIV, a hunt that has also drawn the interest of a crime syndicate.

In addition to a single-player adventure designed to last roughly 10 hours, the game will feature a cooperative and competitive four-player Treasure Hunt mode, with extra missions available to download.

If it's anything like Professor Layton, it will be a good game :) But Layton will always be the #1, archaeologist/gentlemen/mystery solver/ puzzle aficionado

I don't know why lots of you are writing this off as a Professor layton clone and nothing more, like people below me have said "competition is good" it's like in the early 90's when any FPS that came out was just rediculed as a Doom clone.. if it weren't for those Doom clones the FPS genre would just be Doom and nothing else, and as awesome as Doom is.. people would get bored. I think it'd be great for Layton to have some competition not just from Konami but any other developement studio willing to give the mystery genre a shot, it would only serve to expand the genre as a whole and us gamers would just benefit from it all.

2 me-I think of the Doctor as a "summer gameplay" while waiting 4 the Professor! Can't git enuff of doin' puzzles & now in 3D-a bonus. What would b cool- if there are sequels & they alternate btween the Professors' releases. The Doctor is definitely on my 3D list 2 buy as a carryover to the Professors' next debut. Luv Pf.L.!! >^_^

in the early movies i saw of this it looked a whole lot less like layton and more like an adventure game with puzzles mixed in, i guess they have forgone the direct control of the character and gone with the much more layton'esque town overview. Cant say that will stop me buying it but it does cause me to frown a little when i see it.

konami why dont you just die already? most of your games have been terrible as of late and to try and copy the beloved layton is just too much

being the mystery nut that i am im gonna let his blatant stealing of Prof. L's niche slide... but seriously though even the title format is the same Professor Layton and the "insert mysterious adjective and noun here" then Doctor Lautrec and the Forgotten Knights ahahahaha on a side note, this is very reminiscent of the scene between Sherlock Holmes and Arsene Lupin, the former from England the latter from France, sherlock was written first and at the time it could be said that lupin was a inversed copy (sherlock a detective applying illegal maneuvers whereas lupin a gentleman thief) inception much?

looks like a shameless rip-off to me professor layton games all have more than 20 hours of game play and this one got roughly ten ? disappointed , hope at least the story and puzzles are nice

Professor Layton with a female assistance. That's all this is. If it's really good, that's all that will matter. I've gotta finish the first 2 Layton games myself. I'll wait for the reviews on this before I think about buying it.

Biggest rip-off I have ever seen. But if Level 5 are dicks, and don't release mask of miracles this year, or localise Phoenix vs Layton, then who knows, this game might just be justified.

Another brain teaser... Tasty!

If I can get over the blatant Layton-ness of it all, I might get it once I get a 3DS, if not just to prove people still buy mystery games.

Few more good games and I might pick up a 3DS.

I really hope there will be more Myst style adventure games on the 3DS. It's the perfect format for it. The 3D would be the icing on the cake.

And I thought Puzzle Agent was a Layton Ripoff.

I know it isn't an original concept but I really don't care much either. It looks like it could be as good as Layton so why not play it? Seems like just shunning something based on that is just denying yourself a potentially good game for no real reason. The new Castlevania game is full of grifts from GoW and Shadows of the Colossus but I still had a really fun time running through it.

It IS a clone of professor Layton, but seems to be a AWESOME clone of Layton, just like how Okami was a awesome clone of Zelda. The gameplay seems to be different but we will have to wait and see. Since Japan gets Professor Layton:Mask of Miracles, this should be a good substitute, and it seems interesting, this seems to be in Paris while Professor Layton is from London. Lets give this game a chance, besides, mystery games these days are being awesome, Ace attorney, Layton, Ghost trick and now this.

agree with below. such a blatant rip off.

More than anything, what killed me was the "an university student" line of text proudly displayed in the trailer. Also, if this is set in Paris why do they speak with Brittish accents?

Looks good, but probably won't buy it because I would be supporting a company that can't think of their own ideas.

This look really great, kind of similar to Professor Layton though It still going to be really cool to play, I need to play the Professor Layton games and Zac & Ombra: Amusement Park of Illusion(hopefully this game too).

I got to say he looks like a french version of professor Layton, but i think it still looks good and i will be getting it. Hope layton vs. phoenix comes to the U.S.

Last year, Konami did release a previous Professor Layton clone in Japan, but it went nowhere. At least Doctor Lautrec may be the true competitor to the Layton franchise. It is surprising that it until last year for a Layton clone to appear.

I guess...if it's better than the Layton games than all is good... but if not... it's just a fruitless, annoying imitation.

so the game play looks slightly different from a few quick glimpses but the scenes they used made him look like Layton

It's like the Minecraft copiers. Is this good? Heck yeah. Competition is the reason we don't have to pay $500 for a PS3. Competition is the reason we have the graphics so high-tier. Competition is what moves everything forward.
