Disney's Infinity project leaked

Website Polygon learns more details of upcoming open-world sandbox game; will combine elements of Minecraft and Just Cause and run on consoles and touchscreen devices.

Disney's game division has had a difficult 2012. First, there was the departure of Bungie founder Alex Seropian in February, and in November Disney Epic Mickey 2 released to critical nonchalance, compounded by the division reporting a $216 million loss. However, the company has also been heavily investing, with acquisitions of Korea-based free-to-play developer StudioEX and Indian media house UTV.

It was also recently unveiled that Disney has a new project in the works called Infinity, which GameSpot was invited to see at a Hollywood event on January 15, 2013. Now, website Polygon has seen leaked videos and images that it reports shed more light on Infinity, The game that it has seen will be a multi-platform title combining characters from Disney and Pixar's suite of movies and television shows, and will feature an open world that can be traversed by car, on foot, or by flying.

The website reports that the game is currently being worked on by Avalanche Software, the studio that made Toy Story 3: The Video Game and Cars 2: The Video Game. The site also claims that the game will be released on platforms including consoles, the iPad and Android phones, and will feature cross-platform play. The game will be developed over time with new expansions based on specific Disney IPs, featuring characters, settings, toys and building blocks.

GameSpot has contacted Disney and will update this story if more information becomes available.

We may have to see whether the game is good.

This sounds cool.  What I don't understand though is why Lego hasn't built some sort of sandbox game.  Minecraft has laid out the foundation for you.  Just have to take the blocks and treat them as 1x1 and add 1x2, 2x2, 4x8....ect.  How awesome would it be to be able to design something and export it and order real blocks from a game.

Leave it alone Disney,  You just Took Star Wars, what else do you want?

Why is a company that bought Pixar and is a world leader in animation and hires people on the basis of their imaginations doing so poorly with computer games?

The answer is in the proof that the average age for gamers is 30 in Australia and around 38 in the US.

Can't have kids playing MIckey in a sandbox game toting a firearm and explosives now eh? Hmm... might work if you make Donald a crazy pirate bad-guy and Goofy the quirky arms dealer.

I'll keep my eye on this one. Open world sandbox game based on disney theme is an amazing idea no matter what your age is.

The combination of Just Cause and Minecraft has me solidly interested. The decision to populate it with Disney characters? A bit on the lame side, to be honest. What's wrong with a new IP?

Minecraft and Just Cause, interesting combo.  I wouldn't mind if the game wasn't realistic and featured no violence, but I don't want the basic shallow gameplay that often accompanies such games.  The fact that touchscreen devices are a target makes me wonder if there will really be any depth to this, and when you mention Minecraft then yeah I expect some in depth gameplay.

Sounds interesting. I never did get a chance to play the Toy Story 3 toy box mode.

If TRON, Marvel, and Star Wars were in this, it may be interesting. Let's just hope they don't screw it up.

Sounds great. Disney IP + all those things should make for a great game.

Nice, I was pleasantly surprised by the Toy Story 3 game on 360.  That game turned out to be really good.  Hopefully that's a sign of how this game will turn out

"The game will be developed over time with new expansions based on specific Disney IPs, featuring characters, settings, toys and building blocks."  Meaning it will ship as a bare bones game and can only be truly fleshed out into a fully realized game experience by shelling out an extra $9.99 - $14.99 for each DLC they release.  Sounds an awful lot like what they did with Disney Universe to me.

Toy Story 3 wasn't a bad game. This could be a good game.

Minecraft's mentioned as an inspiration/design idea in the description, but not the article. Is that significant, or just an oversight?

The Toy Story 3 and Car 2 game developers? Eh, Avalanche Software is okay, but nothing to spend top dollar over...

@JaxxxCobol There was a lego "built what you want and order it" software a while ago but I think it was to expensive as you still had to buy packs containing the bits you actually needed rather than just the bits you wanted. There has also been lego built your own city/whatever game but it was never as good as minecraft is. I forgot the name.

@Gondorei So what if they bought Star Wars? They can't take worse care of the francise than G.Lucas and Lucasarts.

@Scarshi Why do they have to be arms dealers? Never heard of kingdom hearts before? SE pulled it off

@barren167 I think they mean that the graphics is inspired by minecraft. Not the gameplay.

@V3rciS So true, even heard that they where considering to make a new Star Wars movie too.

@greatersphere  @V3rciS Their not considering. They ARE making a new trilogy. No complaint here as they could'nt do a worse job than post RotJ George Lucas.

@greatersphere  @WheelerJared  @pathosfire  @V3rciS Really? I got the Tron boxset and although you sort of have to watch the original to get the nice little tie-ins and references, its one of the most aweful science fiction films ever. Would take 'Legacy' over it any day of the week.

@WheelerJared  @pathosfire  @The-Neon-Seal  @V3rciS Regretfully yes, didn't find much good in it. I would have rather watched  WALL-E again. The new TRON can't even compare to the original's shadow in my opinion. And with John well not bad but not great either.
