Dishonored and Journey score big at BAFTA 2013

Dishonored takes gong for Best Game while Journey picks up five awards.

by

Arkane Studios' Dishonored took Best Game at last night's BAFTA 2013 Game Awards.

Journey picked up the most awards, however, notching up five gongs for Artistic Achievement, Audio Achievement, Original Music, Game Design, and Online - Multiplayer.

Telltale Games' The Walking Dead scooped two awards, for Story and Mobile & Handheld. 13 of the total 19 awards on offer went to mobile and downloadable titles.

I thought Dishonored was an exceptional game, figured I would enjoy it from the reviews but I never thought I'd like it as much as I did, keep hoping they release a single player expansion pack or get going with a sequel

I can't lie, I really didn't like Dishonored through the first half or so. Then something clicked and I started to really like it to the point that I didn't want it to end. I would have started a replay immediately, but I have a backlog I need to get through. I will get back to it eventually. Speaking of being dishonored, I am watching the last episode of Game of Thrones season 2 as I write this.

Fifa 13 was nominated for something and Hitman absolution and action award? Now I know that the BAFTA awards are as rubbish as their best award.

congratulation Arkane, thank you for brought us one of the best stealth game this gen. Also a very big thank you for ThatGameCompany, Telltale, Ubisoft Montreal, and Bioware. You guys are the reason why 2012 are so incredibly awesome!

That is a really solid list of picks. Much closer to what I would have picked than a lot of other outlets.

I used to think I was alone and crazy for not thinking that games like the Walking Dead, Dishonored and Journey were the best things to come out all year. Then I voted in the Gamespot public tournament and saw that my 2 favorite games of 2012 were matched up against each other in the finals (Far Cry 3 and Mass Effect 3.) I put more stock in that than any awards I read about.

to me, Dishonored is the closest thing I'll have to half-life 3.

Dishonored was a pre-order gamble that turned out well for me.  The other (cough Colonial Marines) made me think twice about pre-ordering in the future.

I'm glad Dishonored won but being a new IP and all but Far Cry 3 was the best game of the year.

I'm not a big fan of the video game BAFTAs.  Rolling out second rate celebs, to talk about how much they love games when they don't know what they're talking about.  Tbh, the developers probably just see this night as a reason to get drunk.

It's good to see a new IPs doing so well, and might help to encourage other publishers to take a chance on new IPs instead of lazily churning out endless sequels (I'm looking at you Ubisoft).

Personally I thought Dishonored was a bit mediocre. The gameplay was really repetitive, all the levels looked and felt the same, and the story was predictable and derivative.

Nice that my personal GotY also won Best Game at a big awards show. I don't always agree with people who make lists or gives out awards, but when I do, I make a comment about it.

Hmm, let me think, why Dishonored sells like hot cakes.... Maybe because it doesn't feature microtransactions, co-op, set pieces, mindless linear walkthrough, quicktime events, doesn't hold your hand,  and and has thought out story with believable characters?

NOOOOOOOOOO IT JUST GOT LUCKY LETS DO ANOTHER DEAD SPACE YOHOHO

2012 was a disappointing year in gaming so none of these really matter. It was a boring year with a few titles that were just "good" at best.

"Online - Multiplayer: Journey" wtf ... , such an overrated game, & certainly not best multiplayer.

@puketrain If it wasn't a sequel, people would have pooped their pants when they first started playing it. I felt like dishonored was an original xbox game.

@JangoF-76

Couldn't agree with you more buddy.

 I would also like to add that once you get over the novelty of the blink and time-stop mechanic, the game just feels derivative, and also those powers made the game way too easy.

@queuing_for_PS4 Yeah, garbage that scores "AAA" ratings all over the place. LOL!! I love people who bash the Halo games when all the journalist love it and fanboys from other platforms hate it. Just shows how biase and ignorant some gamers are.

Don't know why you're calling out Halo, but it did win something significant...millions and millions of sales.

@Morphine_OD Journey was co-op, Portal 2 was linear, Heavy Rain was nothing but quicktime events; I think it's less "these things are bad" than "let's make sure these elements fit the game".

@WCK619 Let me see, you had a point-click game for GOTY in many sites, so yes, it was a weak year. High hopes in Last of us, God of war, Bioshock, Metro last light. Already a success: ni no kuni, (apparently) tomb raider, I mean this year really looks better than last year.

@WCK619 Opinions are a great thing, and I must respectfully disagree with your opinion.

@SteamyPotatoes It's a great game, but it's definitely overrated in several categories. The fact that it's not even a full blown game just makes me question it's GOTY status.

@kohle36 @EliOli

It depends on the title.  With Dishonored, there was additional DLC included with the pre-order and a physical USB collectible whale lamp.  Plus all the previews looked really good.

With Colonial Marines, it was the pre-release hype, demo, pre-views pre-order DLC etc...  I feel I got deceived with that one.

I used Reward Zone coupons to pay for most of pre-orders though, so very little comes right out of my pocket.  I ended up returning Colonial Marines unopened because of the bad reviews.

@AzulSoul @WCK619 Yeah..compared 2 early last year when we had mediocre titles such as Final Fantasy XIII-2, The Darkness 2 & Asura's Wrath..Then came the atrocious Neverdead, RE:Operation Raccoon City & Ninja Gaiden 3..After that,it got worse 2wards the end of the year..This year started well with Ni No Kuni,Tomb Raider and quite decent titles like Dead Space 3,Crysis 3, DMC & Metal Gear Rising(based on reviews across the web)..

@queuing_for_PS4 @FAIL_TR0LL Halo isn't the freshest series ever, but Halo 4 is definitely not rehashed garbage.... but I'm guessing you didn't play through the single player campaign or you wouldn't have made such an ignorant comment.
