Dish Network app turns your PS3 or PS4 into a virtual set-top box

Virtual Joey app pledges to provide a "nearly identical" experience to the hardware-based version.

by

Today at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show, Dish Network announced that it will launch a new application on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 this spring that will allow owners to use those systems as virtual Dish set-box boxes.

Of course, you'll need a Dish Hopper subscription to make use of the service.

The "Virtual Joey" app pledges to provide a "nearly identical" experience to the Hopper Whole-Home HD DVR's hardware-based Joey, which allows users to watch live TV and recorded programs.

The software-based Virtual Joey clients will operate on PlayStation users' wireless or wired networks. Once installed, customers can operate the Virtual Joey on PS3 or PS4 using a Dish remote or DualShock controller.

If you're attending the 2014 CES this week, you can check out a demo of the Virtual Joey app at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Central Hall at booth #8243.

Dish Hopper? Dish Network? Virtual Joey? I have no idea what any of these things are. US only I guess.

So now the PS4 becomes a cable box as well.

hahah you drones are the biggest hypocrites in the gaming industry.

Do you still need the dish or just the subscription?

So let me get this straight: 2gb DDR3 Ram for "other than gaming" resources, 8 gb GDDR5 Ram for gaming, better multiplats, no mando camera, $100 cheaper, AND cable.  Child please...lol.

What ever happened to being green and saving the planet. Delivering media content via the internet, such a streaming, is thousands of times more wasteful than delivering the content via the TV arial, satellite or cable. The internet is just going to overload due to reckless, lazy, selfish companies like this passing the distribution costs onto the consumer. ISP's will just raise their prices to take account of the extra traffic until the whole thing grinds to a halt.

Sony are the same with their cloud game streaming and selling 50GB game downloads from PSN when a disc is far more efficient. MS is the same and the XB1 is almost impossible to turn off. It's designed to remain in standby, when the government is telling us not to leave electrical equipment on standby to save electricity and the planet.

This internet delivery crap needs sorting out to find a more responsible approach.

It was also announced at CES that Sony is partnering with Netflix to stream 4K content. The way I see it the way cable TV is delivered is obsolete. You cant blame companies for trying to enter the tv market. Netflix shook things up, but once apple tv arrives game over.They will introduce the a la carte system to tv in the same way that they revolutionized the way we consume music.

I knew it was just a matter of time before Sony added TV top box capabilities...its the way of the future and they were looking prehistoric with the lack of functions.

It sounds nice but I don't have the time to get my moneys worth, I'd rather they integrate TV Show season passes into my Netflix account or something.

@angryguy77 You do realize that Sony didn't make this app right?  This is an application written by Dish Network to allow their service to be used through the PS4.  Sony has nothing to do with this.  Don't you feel stupid...

@angryguy77  Are you XO fan boi number 849846598 cause it sure sounds like it. Cause the way this reads to me is PS4 ONCE again out doing the XBONE. Their (Microsoft) whole sale was whole home integration while willfully ignoring game play due to it being inferior. Now Sony says "How about we cut that cord for you Microsoft and we will wirelessly allow people to watch cable programming". So uh yeah that is nice because it is ACTUALLY an entire entertainment center in one and not a bunch of S**T connected through a console claiming to do it all.

@MonstaTruk 2 gigs of PS4 ram is used for OS and not games. GDDR5 is 2% faster than DDR3, and the GPU is only a step up. multiplats still look better on X1 and PS4 is running 1440x1080 not 1920x1080..

@MonstaTruk Not cable, it's dish.  And Dish at that.

I don't use my X1 for a cable box, and I won't use my soon-to-purchase PS4 as a dish box.  It's all for gaming.

@justerthought

Tell you what, when the gov stops wasting my money, I'll stop "wasting" electricity.

There is no shortage of energy, the problems and costs that we have seen are a direct result of the very same government that's telling you to not consume something.

There is no AGW, it's one of the biggest hoax's ever to be pulled off in the history of mankind. The climate has been changing long before coal and oil were being used to make our lives better.

@usmc_jesse

PS3 was doing multimedia long before MS jumped on the bandwagon, but unlike XB1, games were always the priority. PS4 gives games an even stronger focus, but software and services can be updated later, so Sony wisely have the option to expand the multimedia at a later date once the launch is out of the way.

In contrast the XB1 hardware spec is gimped towards multimedia so the gaming will suffer forever. Hardware cannot be updated. It is cast in stone for the life of the console. PS4 is an extremely powerful 'games console'. XB1 is a 'multimedia console' that also plays games. MS hijacked the xbox brand in order to launch a TV box on the masses. Don't get too smug because it's going to come back and bite you when you find out what I've said is true.

untouchables111
untouchables111

First! Sony didn't do anything about adding tv functions. They simply made a platform capable of multimedia functions. Dish is simply using those functions. Look don't make the ps4 out like x1 is as a box that's all about being a nothing new tv box. It's deff cool that this is happening but ps4 is a game system first.

jeremyc99999

@berserker66666Ok, I'll alert both Sony and Dish Network and let them know you didn't ask for this. They will be sure to remove this option from future consideration.

@BJCentral

Resorting to personal insults indicates that you're starting to worry whether XB1 can deliver and think you can shout it better by venting hate on the opposition. Burying your head in the sand won't work. What ever you say, I'll be on my powerful PS4 playing awesome games with a huge grin on my face, while you're playing gimped versions, crying into your kinect spycam "I still love you Microsoft."

untouchables111

Hello Sony didn't make this app ps4 is all about games. All this proves is that ps4 Can do everything that x1 can.

TenraiSenshi
TenraiSenshi

@BJCentralIt's a third party app, it's not like Sony was gunning for it from the start. Either way, it doesn't matter because those who don't want it can avoid it. O_o

angryguy77

@Vylsith@angryguy77

no i don't feel stupid really. See, all I heard from drones over the last several months was how your system was for true gamers and how Sony didn't waste time, money, and resources developing a system with TV functions while ignoring the fact that the ps4 allocates more ram for it's OS. I realize sony didn't create this app, however they did make a system that allowed for it. So, really, it's you drones who should feel stupid for banging on MS for making a $500 "cable box" when your system is slowly being given similar(not as good) features.

Now I don't think this is a bad move, unlike you tools, this is a good feature for the PS4.

Console war aside, Sony fans are the most hypocritical lot in the gaming community.

angryguy77
angryguy77

@willnye88@angryguy77

No a fan, but not a fanboy. While I believe the X1 to be the superior system, I can admit the PS4 is a good system and will not only be successful, but have some great games.

Only a fanboy would state MS ignored game play after seeing games like Ryse, forza and their future lineup.

And how does the PS4 allow for wireless cable programming? You still need a Hopper if I'm not mistaken and this is only for one provider. While it is a good feature, it's still not close to what the X1 offers in this area.

brocklee5000

Still? It never looked better on xbone. Wait til steam machine is released. Then its only ps4 vs steam machine. I'd rather pay $500 for that then a tv box.

@2tonjunk @MonstaTruk  Haha you've got to be the only one that delusional. It is not a secret that the PS4 looks better, google a side by side test. Read, I don't know, any article. Maybe these

Just admit you bought the wrong system and if you haven't there's still time to get over your fandom. I really didn't care when they were first announced I was just going to buy which was superior. I have both a PS3 and 360. But look, get over it, the PS4 is just better. They just topped the XO in whole home entertainment (if you have dish), they have remote support, better graphics, a lower price tag. It's over, I'm sorry.

@sephsplace @bubba_1988

You pay for what you get. Quality costs money. Apple make great products with ground breaking creative designs that are extremely ergonomic to use and very reliable.

bubba_1988
bubba_1988

@sephsplace @bubba_1988 Yes they are way too expensive, but their quality in service and software is top notch. Think of it this way, I'd rather buy a $400 apple tv box and buy individual channels that I could also access from any internet able device. Compare this to alternative, where now you rent cable boxes, are forced to upgrade when service changes, god forbid you want tv in another room, that needs the ultra hd super box. Then there's paying for bloated channel packages.. . . .

You cant find a better mp3 player today and id rather pay 99 cents for a song than sometimes up to 2.99 back in the day.

@justerthought you are a delusional idiot. Let me know how all the squinting needed in the next few years to prove your point goes.

cvantu
cvantu

@justerthought only idiots worry about such things, and anyone can read your tone that you yourself are carrying a little of worry about the PS4. Anyways, delusion has never helped anyone, and it only makes them look like fools. When your precious system provides an experience that surpasses the Xbox One, then you can talk. As it stands, your belief holds no weight.

cvantu
cvantu

@untouchables111 wait...this story proves that for you? Well, it probably can in the future as Sony continues to add to it...I mean, the Xbox 360 could only play games, DVD's, and audio CD's, and you Sony fans were jumping for joy of all the things the PS3 could do...which the 360 eventually started adding. I'm glad though that it took this story to prove something to you that already happened 6 plus years ago.

PixelAddict

@tigress666 I see your point, but I think they may have balked because of the space requirement issue.

Our Tivo Premieres have 500 GB, and they fill up FAST.  I cannot imagine having a gaming console's save file space compete with HD DVR-type stuff.

I would only personally consider doing that if I upgraded the HD to a 2 TB capacity drive.  Otherwise I would just feel all claustrophobic!

tigress666
tigress666

@PixelAddict@2tonjunkWell, seeing as the company I use rents us a crappy DVR, I'd totally use my console as a DVR if I could. But so far no one has made a console you can do that with.

Shoot, anyone who can sell me a DVR that will work with my cable company and I am sure can do a better job than the crap they provided us would have my interest. And this is why MS failed... they could have had me seriously considering xbox despite preferring PS if it could have also served as a DVR. Just cause I would love to replace the POS that is my DVR. And while I would feel it was a compromise it would be an acceptable trade off.

PixelAddict
PixelAddict

@2tonjunk  Nah, I cannot.  I do not have Dish, and I do not want to use my console as a DVR.  I have Tivo for that.

Not to mention the space that would require!  500 GB goes fast when installs are 30-50 GB EACH!!

@bubba_1988I like to do what i want with my music, store it on what i want, use it the way i want to... as it is MY MUSIC, MY COLLECTION, i dont want to feel i am renting it (and also i dont like using .mp3, i prefer open formats like ogg which apple products don't support, limiting my functionality again)

philip6k

@s2i2p2i2o @bubba_1988 It cost a fortune to do that with your current cable provider, every channel I want they have it bundled in a package with a bunch of useless channels ill never watch

s2i2p2i2o
s2i2p2i2o

@bubba_1988 You mean you can't already do all that channel selection from your current cable providor? Plus, you can buy individual songs for the same price at a crap load of other webbsides and services.

Yes, what Apple does is great, but it's far from the only company that does it, and they cost more.

willnye88

@cvantu @justerthought I would love to hear how you think the XO is better than the PS4?

Maybe remote support? Oh no that's the PS4

Maybe graphics? Oh wait, also PS4

Perhaps price? Nope, nope, once again PS4

Maybe the hardware so the ceiling is higher? Nope PS4 also has more room for improvement

Maybe actually supporting all your entertainment center needs in one? That too belongs to PS4?!?!

Wait, how was justerthought delusional again?

@cvantu@MonstaTruk@usmc_jesse@TenraiSenshi@BJCentralActually, you shouldn't be ranting about idiot rationalization when you are obviously missing the point yourself (though I suspect you are more ignoring it on purpose cause you have no real retort if you don't ignore the point). MS used different RAM because they needed to have 8 GB and couldn't afford to do 8 GB of the better type of RAM (here Sony got kinda lucky but since they weren't marred on a multimedia device they didn't necessarily have to have 8 GB RAM). On top of that because they were putting in other hardware to make it a better multimedia box and they have to consider that they gotta keep the price reasonable or it just won't sell no matter how good it is, the specs weren't as good to keep the price down to allow it to do more.

Sony on the other hand gets this app, that some one else made for the box, and it doesn't compromise the PS4 because first of all they didn't have to dedicate hardware for it as it was made after the fact and they didn't even have to spend money developing for it. This app didn't compromise the PS4's specs in any way.

cvantu
cvantu

@MonstaTruk@usmc_jesse@TenraiSenshi@BJCentral ahhhh...yes, that is a prime example of idiot rationalization. I mean, I guess the "App" in the One's operating system with an HDMI passthrough was just sooooo much devotion. I don't have to plug anything into my Xbox One if I don't want to.

MonstaTruk
MonstaTruk

@usmc_jesse @TenraiSenshi @BJCentral The difference is you've got Microsoft devoting HARDWARE towards Kinect/TV. This is an APP.  You don't even have to download it onto your PS4, if you don't want to...lol.
