Disgaea 3 to blight US PS3s

Nippon Ichi's Netherworld-set strategy-RPG series descends on Sony's latest console in August.

NIS America is preparing a Prinny Barrage for the PlayStation 3. The domestic branch of Japanese publisher Nippon Ichi Software today announced that it will be bringing the latest installment of the Disgaea strategy-role-playing game series to North America later this year.

Blunt trauma: What else are friends for?

Originally released last month in Japan, Disgaea 3 introduces a new main character and supporting cast, much like the series' first sequel. However, staples like the Netherworld setting and the abundance of knife-wielding penguin helpers known as Prinnies will return, ensuring that the game retains some aspects that are distinctly Disgaea in nature. As in previous games, Disgaea 3 will feature 2D characters and 3D backgrounds.

Gameplay mechanics from previous Disgaea games will also be returning, as the third installment in the franchise will once again see players level up their equipment as well as their characters in Item Worlds. The Geo Panel system, by which certain colored squares in each level confer bonuses or penalties for the characters who occupy them, will also return. However, Nippon Ichi is throwing in some new wrinkles to the gameplay, including a Geo Block system that allows players to change a level's landscape and access hard-to-reach areas.

Disgaea 3 has been rated T for Teen and is scheduled for an August release.

I feel like buying a PS3 just for this game.. God.. the hours of my life that I've dedicated to disgaea 1 on the psp and ps2

Next, I want NIS to localize Rumble Fish and, uh, Melty Blood.

Wow nothing new in this news. The same stuff we've known forever. Thank you for the lack of information Gamespot. By the way if you haven't played the first 2 yet GET ON TOP OF THAT NOW. Number 2 makes number 1 feel broken and it's likely that number 3 will be so amazing that number 2 will be left broken. So play them in order before it's too late

well, i need some good rpg's to fill the gap until final fantasy XIII and star ocean 4 come out, so this should do nicely.

I would like to wait to buy a PS3, but I doubt my mom will wanna wait until August for me to buy it. Still I'll hold off until then so that I can buy Disgaea 3 when it comes out.

I'm sorry to say I just lost respect for Nippon Ichi after viewing the screenshots. I love Disgaea but why bother making a 3rd gen game with 2nd gen graphics. This game looks hastily thrown together on a ramen noodle budget. For shame...

is one of the key reason to add a PS3 to my arsenal the new FF games and GT5 are an added bonus

I love Disgaea and want 2D to continue forever, but these sprites need to be much higher resolution. This looks like it could have been on the original Xbox.

I find it odd this is just now being written when this was made public quite some time ago. Sadly Atlus and NIS are almost always overlooked...

ShadoweaverCode 360player_eq12 - Yea, good point, at least the sprites were HD. I still think Culdcept Saga could have made one heck of an arcarde release, but with MS's (50?) MB limit, they might have been forced to release it as an official title at a discounted price. Sony doesn't have a size cap on their PSN releases. That size limit's been increased to 250MB (or 150MB, I can't remember) a long time ago already.

I hope they really up the graphics. I like Nippon Ichi's style, but if this game is appearing on the PS3, and retailing for $59.99, but still looks like its PS2 predecessors, then I'm going to be disappointed. Why not make it for last gen then?

This game is gonna be awesomeness. I'm still not done with Afternoon of Darkness though. This game is automatically worth 60$. Its the games that take 6 to 10 hours to beat not worth it. Nippon Ichi games always take around 30-40 hours to beat and then +200 hours to really explore the possibilities and limits of it.

LOL, there's a power ranger in one of the screeshots, lol. Anyway, the game looks sick, I'll buy it for sure. :D

Kenaue, I hate to tell you that you're wrong, but you're wrong. Afternoon of Darkness was indeed a port of Hour of Darkness(the original Disgaea), however, Disgaea 2 was called Cursed Memories. Disgaea 2 had new main characters while incorporating a lot of the previous things from the original, including roles for the original's main characters. But if you were just implying that Cursed Memories wasn't good enough to be considered a sequel, well, then you're wrong there too. If you truly hadn't heard of Cursed Memories though, I personally thought it was worth playing though you might not have time to get through it before Disgaea 3 comes out. "Kenaue There was only one other Disgaea game seeing as the PSP one was a port with some extra stuff. "

i agree with a lot of posters here. disgaea is an awesome game, but to chage 60 bucks for it will make even big fans like me to wait until it is in the discount bins.

So Disgaea 3 descends into america then in august, seeing as its already on the PS3 in japan. Though I guess it doesnt matter until it reaches american soil...

This goes out to all those people out there who seem to be under the impression that games are not an art form: It is. Do you know what art is? Art's sole purpose is in getting a reaction, whether it be good, bad, or neutral. By posting about how you hate the graphics, or that you are just okay with them, or by praising them, it makes, not just this game, but all games be a form of art. Same goes with in game music or story. Got it? Good. Don't make me repeat myself.

I might consider trying my first Disgaea if it doesn't come out at $60. I object to the $60 price point of PS3/360 games right off the bat, and I definitely don't see a reason why I or anybody else who hasn't gotten into the series yet, to pay $60 for a game that would probably look and play the same on a past gen console.

Sony, release the White PS3 with rumble and BC before August and I will finally buy your console together with this game.

Nippon Ichi may be enough to make me buy a PS3 if they stick with it, god I love their ridiculously addicting and unnecessarly complicated tactical RPG's... no matter how often they burn me with poor sleep.

To be honest, I'm still playing the PSP version of Disgaea (There was a month or 2 break from the game). It's an amazing game, and I wish the second one would come to PSP as well. Personally, I would much rather see this series on a handheld. There is sooooooo much to do in this game, and it's hard to sit through it all.

The only thing that would make this release a problem for the PS3 is if it retails for the same amount as most high-end PS3 games, which generally retail for $60. Because if this game comes out costing that much, one has to ask what exactly they're paying the extra $10 (or more) for. Graphics alone do not a next-gen game make, but it is a little mystifying. Not that Disgaea wouldn't be worth it.

ShadoweaverCode

eViL_kA - I never said Sony was making the game. I know they're not making the game it very clearly states that Nippon Ichi is both the developer and the publisher. But you don't think that Nippon Ichi ever talked to Sony at any point? You think any development studio can just make a game and say it's going to be on PS3, and it does? No, my friend, it's got to go through proper channels, and get approvals. When a developer wants to make a game, they first decide what platforms to target the title for, then contact those platforms (Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo) directly and speak to an agent, which then works with the development studio. So to say that the platform isn't involved whatsoever during development, is totally wrong. I said in my post that I had never played a Disgaea game, so I don't know why you felt to reiterate what I had already wrote. Don't get me wrong, I love 2d games. I'm a game programmer and have worked on several c++ games before, and I plan to work in the industry someday. My point was that, even though 2d games can be amazingly fun, I wouldn't expect Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony to put a 2d game on disc and make it an official title. I would expect that it would fall under some sort of 'arcade' catagory (unless we're talking a GBA release), because, after all, it's still a 2d game no matter how fun it is. Whether I made it, or Nippon Ichi made it, or king of 2d, Nintendo made it, it doesn't matter it still doesn't belong as full featered release, that is all.

@ShadoweaverCode "Perhaps this is Sony's defense", " Sounds like Sony just wants to get titles on their system" First of all, SONY isn't making this game it's coming from Nippon Ichi. Second, judging from your comments you've likely never played a Disgaea game before (or a Nippon Ichi game.) Finally, i don't know why you keep mentioning SONY when the article never even mentioned "SONY". That alone indicates a trolling fanboy. Hey why aren't you playing your 360 if it is so awesome? Oh, must have been sent out for repairs...

ShadoweaverCode
ShadoweaverCode

Perhaps this is Sony's defense against Namco Bandai announcing exclusive RPG's for 360 and Wii?

ShadoweaverCode
ShadoweaverCode

They are actually putting a 2d sprite based game, and offering it as if it were a real nex-gen game?? Sounds like Sony just wants to get titles on their system, regardless of what they offer. This should have been some $10 PSN game. I'm not dishing the quality of the game because I have never played it, but it would be comparable to 360 releasing an equivalent of Sonic 1, and trying to sell it like an official 360 game. That's just silly!
