Dirt 3 digging in 2011

Codemasters' rally racing franchise returns next year; first trailer shows diverse weather, explosions.

ESPN's X-Games 16 descended upon Los Angeles over the weekend, bringing with it four days of gravity-defying tricks on skateboards and bikes, plus rally cross racing, motocross, and more. The X-Games also ushered in the first trailer for Codemasters Dirt 3, a minute-long teaser that culminated in the publisher revealing a 2011 release window.

Dirt 3 will apparently feature a stunt mode...with exploding trucks.

Rally racing is again the name of the game in Dirt 3, where physics-based car tuning is paired with exotic environments ranging from arid desertscapes to winding snow-steeped mountainous byways. And judging by Codemasters' first trailer for the game, the studio will be staying true to those principles.

Opening shots show a rally car zipping through a dry, dusty environment at dusk, catching air off of uneven surfaces in its path. The car then transitions to cruising through a torrential downpour along a highway by a lake, with dense forest and brooding skies overhead. It's then on to the northern climates, as the same car is shown skidding through a blizzard up in the mountains, with evergreens lining the treacherous roadway.

More cars are then shown joining the race, through what looks like a coastal European town on a bright, sun-drenched morning. As the cars weave in and around one another, a background shot shows a vehicle catching massive air off of a large dirt ramp. The trailer then appears to take a page out of Disney Interactive's Split/Second, showing a tractor trailer's bed exploding while the car drifts around and under it.

Beyond a release window, Codemasters offered no additional details about the title.

@Mr_Manikin52 you can't compare the WRC game with this, WRC is going to a more sim style with out being a RBR, and this one has a little more of arcade style for the not so experimented drivers or the ones that want to just have fun. Dirt 2 online is freackin fun, even if it's not a full rally sim, it is great to play for what can be hours every day. is like comparing GT5 or Forza with Grid, totally diferent and not the same concept

This will be a mix of Split/Second and WRC 2010. Pretty cool.

Awesome. Dirt 2 was probably the best racer I've played.

To all the people saying that this isn't strictly Rally Racing anymore theres a new WRC game coming out, but I do enjoy Dirt and Grid and its arcadeyness I never had more epic racing moments in any other racing game then in Codemaster's games.

I loved the original Dirt, got every achievement for it, but this new look and attitude is ok with me, the basic driving physics seem to be much the same if not slightly improved, and that's what matters to me the most.

I really wish this series hadn't been extremeified, it was way better when the focus was on pure rally racing. I doubt the masses feel the same way however.

Sweet! Aslong as there are racers from other countries this time! Its usually you and 7 other americans and Ken block being a total ***** bag.

This trailer took almost the exact footage of Ken Block's Gymkhana video. That could be a fun gameplay mode if they do it right. And hopefully Ken Block does better in this game than he did at the XGames last weekend.

Finally, I was praying for snow and.. explosions? I was an avid player & am still fond of RallisportChallenge2 with its varying locales and weather conditions. I always wondered why they (Codemasters) left that out of Dirt2.

Whatever happened to Colin Mcrae the Rally games ? Im and always have been a huge fan and follower of Codemasters but they are going way beyond rallying in my opinion. They going the same way with these games as they have with their previous proper racing titles from a few year back, Games like the Colin Mcraes on the PC, The Toca series where all real life racing, Its all about the marketing now trying to please too many people instead of sticking with their passion. They already had a good fan base but they of course want more and unfortunatly thats results in an Arcade Racing game to suit everyone. Dirt 2 was great fun and Im still gonna go back and finish it properly but shouldnt they seperate the types of racing and make a whole seperate game for fun. Maybee leave Dirt the way it is but maybee bring back a spera Colin Mcrae " RALLY " game. Thats my opinion anyway.

Helios posted at VirtualR that Codemasters listened to the fans and are more focused on rallying and that there will be more rally stages in it. Don't think the game is getting farther away because of one new discipline. It also looks like they're brining snow and wet weather (one shot shows a wet track).

I hope they learned not to bother with Ken Blocks voice acting skills... About as exciting as a Block of wood :?

With every game they release, they get farther and farther away from actual rally racing. Why Codemasters?

This is so dope, Dirt2 was missing the elements and some type of alternative mode and it looks like they fixed both, real tracks and a real tour would be great too, Im in.

I just would like to see a more international approach. European Drivers, global stages, Weather, day/night time, etc. I don't mind American Drivers and The X-Games...but I would like to see something like Race of Champions in the game. And this is coming from an American.

Looks like they're following ole Ken Block still with his change to racing Fords instead of Subarus. I'm sad the WRX won't be the face of this game anymore, though the rally spec Fiesta is pretty badass.

Real tracks? I really liked Dirt more than Dirt 2 cause of the real tracks please put some in!

Yeah, Gymkhana, great, more Americanization. I wouldn't be surprised if this game featured even less rally tracks. I'll still be getting it though :(

2011 looks like it is really going to be a great year for racing! Dirt is a great game series for off-road racing; that is for sure. I'm looking forward to Dirt 3 quite a bit. Having new offroad tracks to race never gets old. Project Gotham Racing 5 is the other game I'm really looking forward to for 2011. The thing that really excites me is that the legendary developers who created Forza Motorsport 3 are the ones working on Project Gotham Racing 5. I'm also really looking forward to see exactly what will happen with racing games the way they interact with Kinect.
