DICE 'very interested' in Battlefield 4 eSports

Developer says it is looking at competitive gaming support for upcoming military shooter; game won't have any co-op.

DICE is "very interested" in eSports support for Battlefield 4, according to studio general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson.

"I can say that eSports is an area that we are very interested in," Troedsson told Leutin09 in a new video interview posted on YouTube.

Troedsson did not go into any further detail, as only Battlefield 4's single-player has been revealed that far. Still, he explained that eSports is a growing phenomenon and that it will be no easy task to pull it off in the final product.

"It's not as easy as some game developers like to think; that's it's just that you do A, X, Y, and Z and everything is done. It's actually much bigger than that now," Troedsson said. "There are some people that actually see this as a new phenomenon and that's not true either. It's been around for a long time. It's just recently that it's really starting to take off…"

Troedsson further explained that Battlefield multiplayer has always been "very competitive" and "the heart" of every new installment in the series.

"And that won't change moving forward," he said.

Also during the interview, Troedsson revealed that Battlefield 3's cooperative mode will not return for Battlefield 4. "We don't have co-op in Battlefield 4. We have made that decision. We're focusing everything we have on multiplayer and the single-player," he said.

Battlefield 4 launches this fall for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, but not Wii U. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

DICE was "very interested" during the hype for BF3 too...

I have a doubt, BF4 will be released for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, but if you click on "follow" here, it will give the option to follow the PS4 and Wii U versions.... My point is, if later on, DICE makes a PS4 and Xbox 720 versions, it will  likely be a port, right ? As the PC version is the main platform, maybe we will need to wait until the next gen consoles to get released and see how these ports comes out, because next year I want to spend my money on the right platform, the one that gives me the best open map FPS..... PC is winning already with ARMA 3, so, instead of spending $450 + or - on a console, maybe PC will be the better way... Consoles are improving themselves year after year by making better FPS games, but I won't buy a new gen if the only thing available in the first months will be only ports! Let's wait what Xbox 720 has to say !

Just stop now, EA. Don't waste the money trying.

No LAN mode = No competitive merit. If BF4 still doesnt have a LAN option then forget it ever being recognized in the eSports world. Playing shooters online in a tournament setting is far to random to have any merit.

Not having co-op in BF4 is a big mistake imo. Co-op is fun, a nice way to practice using things like choppers when new to the game, and a great way to meet other players in a neutral setting.

Very poor decision imo - co-op is still, to this day, quite active in BF3. They should improve on it, not ignore it. Really dumb move imo - very disappointed in them.

I'm really looking forward to bf4, but im anxious to see how they tie this release in with the opening of the new console generation. I think DICE is an amazing developer,  but i hope that they continue to support their games' lifespans and don't end up straying towards the COD franchise (in terms of how frequently they release new installments). Saying that, they did release bf3 in late 2011, so i guess its time for an update, but its gone soo fast, and the game still looks pretty gorgeous.

I'm sure they'll still not support LAN or System Link. I hope a few tournaments end in (Cannot connect to EA servers) just to make a point.

The main reason why they let coop go, is because it is broken in some situations in BF3 and don't want to spend any time fixing it.

Ive started playing BF3 and have come to the conclusion that it SUCKS. There are so many bugs in the game is feels lijke skyrim all over. When i'm running and i get stopt by a little pebbel on the road it fucking stupid or when you shoot a rocket  or throw a grenade day dissapear when you die. That makes perfect sence. or people homing bullets that go around corners and dont forget the people that stand stil. They are invinceble you can shoot them how much you can not even hitmakkers apear. And no i'm not talking about people that just spawn.

That all for me make it the flop of the year. Way to go EA a nother peace of crap that cost 100 $

No ones cares about the single player experience in Battlefield. In Battlefield multiplayer is  where all the fun is at.

Where is bad company 3 i dont care about bf 4 , give us bf bad company 3 with co-op and with nanosuit (since EA have crytek) and IT WILL SELL

I did enjoy battlefield and cod until they stayed to be  same old same old.

CO OP is a perfect fit for Battlefield franchise but only problem was it she a shoehorned in. I mean they can properly implement co-op by making the 2nd,3rd or 4th player taking controls of one of the other players in the squad. Now that the squad is not faceless like before.

Someguy1212

no co-op? Co-Op in BF3 was GREAT and was a lot down that it wasn't expanded.

Hope they have eSports type servers. I gotta say that Black Ops 2 putting the League Play in was pretty damn nice if you played the solo league. I found that it had better player matching than anything ever before. I suck at the game but was actually managing to get on the top of the leaderboard because putting in an effort actually payed off, because everybody was of similar skill. I can honestly say it as the ONLY time I had complete fun playing COD instead of just bouncing back and forth between it being *kinda* fun but mostly frustrating. What breaks player matching is the party system. That is the main reason that TrueSkill and Zones have never really worked for the 360 as advertised, even though they were great ideas.

See, this is what happened when they let badminton into the Olympics, anything can be considered a sport. I can't wait for championship cake mixing.

Why don't they focus on putting "everything" into multiplayer instead of also into a 5 hour graphics performance utility?

why do people bring up EA all the time this has nothing to do with them dice wants to expand.  EA is a great company.  People need to see the positive in life.  Remember to smile every so often.

Dice isn't anywhere near talented enough to make a balanced enough game for eSports.  Look how often Blizzard, Treyarch etc tweak their eSports titles.  Usually once every week or 2.  Dice tweaks BF3 once every 4 or 5 months and still haven't gotten it right.

@SaviorXavi3r This is 2013. You can connect 20 PC's in the same room to the internet. You don't need LAN anymore. Playing shooters in a tournament setting online is far to random? How so? I've been playing FPS's in tournaments online for the last 15 years of my life. What the hell are you talking about?

dalua360
dalua360

@duderdave If the co op on BF3 had 300 missions I would be playing it until today and maybe I would spend less time on multiplayer ! Co op is so fun because everytime we mess up, there's the whole responsibility about the other guy being screwed too, which it can't happen in multiplayer with that intensity ! That's the greatness of Co op !

dalua360
dalua360

@ROEG-GAMER To say this is to say that there aren't people starving in the world just because you have food to eat ..... We have 7 billion people in the world, but you have it all figured out, right? Did you put your hands on a BF3 version where the single player experience is vast and well constructed to be able to refute the need of having another one? I don't think so !

deestinct

@benbrooky13 Maybe now it won't be 5 hours anymore.....maybe it's 8, 9 or 10 hours! Since they're focusing all their efforts in singleplayer and multiplayer without coop...

@SIDEFX1 I used to like it, until Battlefield 3 came along. Sure, the Bad Company series had the same campaign kind of deal, but they were spin-offs, I could live with that. But why BF3 and now BF4? There's a reason that mods for BF2 like AIX and BF2SP64 existed, after all :P

@Whiskey3romeo i'm a recent convert to dice from pretty much only playing cod. bf3 is exceptional fun which cod hasn't been for a long time but in terms of competitive play you might as well play random number gennerater competitively

@Whiskey3romeo If you don't like BF then y are you here. I don't like COD i don't like any news related to COD. Even i don't watch any new upcoming trailers. So plz just leave and go and play your COD. BF one building = COD full map. You BS a$$

chaos-commander
chaos-commander

@Whiskey3romeo DICE is extremely talented for being so small but let me guess you favor activision right. DICE is the one that made a fps franchise big in a time when cod was king (MW).  After that BFBC2 came out and changed expectations for multiplayer on consoles remember that.

MTHoodlum423
MTHoodlum423

@dalua360 @ROEG-GAMER People play the single player? If people want a good FPS single player experience then they are playing the wrong games. Try Metro, Dead Space, Bioshock. BF3 is meant for multiplayer. They should scrap single player all together.

GlaciusXL

@joqqy @Bayonetta2013 That's the thing, IF it was actually going to be a proper Mirror's Edge game, hell yeah! But I could easily see it being a "re-imagining". And just like any genre that had it's own flavor 5 years ago before drifting more and more to the PointAPointB Shoot Everything genre, it's unique twist would be toned down and the gun play turned up so that by time it was done, the only way you would know it was Mirror's Edge, is because of the title. I can think a lot of awesome games that took that route within the last few years.

@sniperwol_basic You don't read nor comprehend what you read very well, do you?  Maybe you should remove your drool bucket from around your neck.  It seems to be getting in the way of you forming a coherent thought.

@chaos-commander @Whiskey3romeo How is DICE small? don't they have nearly 300 employees, count in EASY and you have probably over 400 if I am not mistaken. I wouldn't call that small, and btw, they are an EA studio family, so they have all the resources of EA available to them.

Whiskey3romeo
Whiskey3romeo

@chaos-commander @Whiskey3romeo I despise CoD and everything it stands for and much prefer the gameplay of Battlefield, but from a pure quality standpoint CoD is a far better game.  It's not even close.  BF3 has extremely clunky controls, horrible weapon design and balance, uninspired maps, etc etc.

MTHoodlum423
MTHoodlum423

@-Geo @Whiskey3romeo BO2 is a good esport game. You just have to limit whats allowed and not allowed in a match. Far better than BF is as an esport so far.

dalua360
dalua360

@MTHoodlum423 @dalua360 @ROEG-GAMERI agree that the games you listed have great campaigns, but what I meant is: "What if .....", so we never had the chance to play a long and great campaign in BF3 because it does not exist, so we can't say that no one would care or would play just because the game focuses on multiplayer! I don't know if the developers can't do both in one game due to lack of memory or money, if that is the reason then I agree they have to cut the singleplayer to make a better multiplayer, or better, use MAG as an example , and make a ONLY multiplayer game (I'm not saying that MAG is good), beside that, look at the example of COD games, where people always ask for longer and better campaign stories, that means most players would enjoy both things on a FPS game most known for its multiplayer side! To be honest, I wish that DICE took the Medal Of Honor series and make it only singleplayer (totally remodeled of course), and BF3 would be only co-op and multiplayer focused....

To argue about these things here is just a way to socialize and make friends because it doesn't matter what we want or think, they will develop in their way no matter what, and I think now it's too late, because the game is likely to be in alpha test already.

@Whiskey3romeo @chaos-commander Man I almost choked on my lunch :)

Yeah, bloody horrible BF weapons and small stupid maps... 20th century visuals... and all those pesky vehicles... who needs them anyway? ;)
