DICE says it "should be slapped" for Battlefield 3 unlock system

Creative director Lars Gustavsson said DICE shipped Battlefield 3 with "probably the worst setups ever," and that Battlefield 4 won't make the same mistake.

DICE has spoken about the unlock system in Battlefield 3, saying that it was difficult for new players to compete online.

"We shipped Battlefield 3, which we should be slapped for, with probably the worst setups ever," said DICE creative director Lars Gustavsson in an interview with VG247.

Battlefield 3 required players to achieve kills to unlock both weapons and the customisations for them, such as red dot sights and silencers. The same unlock system also applied to the game's vehicles, with Gustavsson saying that this made planes in particular especially challenging for new players.

"As a pilot, you had to fly your plane and only kill other planes with your cannons," he said. "You didn't have any countermeasures; you didn't have any missiles. And that's basically for the best of the best pilots; that's what they should do to show their skills."

Beginners, he added, "should have countermeasures, you should have heat-seeking missiles to give you a smooth ride into the game and then from there on you should customize."

Elsewhere in the interview, Gustavsson said the team at DICE have worked on latency and the game's UI to also streamline Battlefield 4 for beginner players.

"With Battlefield 4 we've done numerous things," he said. "We heard this feedback once again from Battlefield 3. We did a lot of tests; some of them were simple stuff just directly correlating to input latency and stuff like that. People were behind an enemy; they thought they had a perfect kill, but with latency and everything it turned out that they missed, and they wondered why."

"So we've worked with latency," he continued. "We've added a test range where you can learn to fly the transport helicopter, not crash it into your friends. We've reworked menus to give you a much better understanding of how you customize--comparisons when you add attachments that give you a better understanding, just like racing games."

"We have reworked the spawn menu, just the concept of spawning in; in most games you just end up somewhere random, but here we have a choice. We have to try to show that in a much more visual way. So we've done rigorous testing on that one. Game mode movies and so on."

"We've definitely done a lot to smooth the learning curve," he concluded.

Battlefield 4 will be released on October 29 for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions will follow at launch.

I love the new system for BF4 on it's online BETA!! It's easy to get rewards and fast weapons with upgrade. Bravo, DICE... Bravo... (Clapping hands)

Well, I don't think they should make another Resident Evil, but whatever..

Well ... one thing for sure, I just met a person that his rank was way long above me or other player. The Beta just started 2 days, then I met this guy, we were complained to saw his skills and weapon though it seems impossible to see it in Beta.

From what I've played of the BF4 Beta, it seems like they need to be slapped even harder now. I stuff is terribly laid out, no explanations, and it seems like 1/2 ME3 multiplayer unlock system and 1/2 the old. It's very strange and confusing if you ask me. I might get used to it but I'm not too sure lol.

From what I have seen, they still have a LONG way to go trying to fix latency problems in BF4.

The exclusive beta seems to have run well, but the open one is experiencing huge lag and connexion issues - some worse than the BF2 open beta.

It's taking a lot of people I have seen as much as 15 minutes just to get it running enough to get into a server without constant launcher crashing.

Not good so close to the game's launch.

@duderdave

I play on a Chicago server and my ping is usually lower then 10 ms.  It runs buttery smooth. I have not had latency problems yet.

Blueresident87
Blueresident87

@duderdave I had some latency problems the first day I played it, but since then it's been much better. I've only been booted for no reason from one game, which is a big upgrade from 3 where I would get kicked at least every other game. I'm sure they'll get it figured out, these guys have done this before.

Dice should be slapped for creating BF3 fullstop. Destroyed the multiplayer elements that made BC2 one of the greatest online experiences.

Blueresident87

@residude Bad Company 2 is probably the best online among all of them. I haven't played BF 2 in ages, but I remember that one being great as well. I was not a fan of BF 3's mp either.

The only unlock that pissed me off was the Jet. You started off with nothing but a machine gin and I ended up having to carefully drive the jet into a flag capture zone to unlock the missiles. It's hard to hit anything with the machine guns!

Not for me, its one of the only games I still look forward to and enjoying spending money on new pc hardware to make it run flawless. Im very excited for bf4

I'm so happy with all these improvements, I love Battlefield but I'm not the most awesome player, especially when it comes to air combat. I've been playing the Battlefield 4 beta for the PS3 and already see how different it is from BF3. Also I really enjoy the thought that I have the option to train before I go online and also that if it looks like this in a PS3 beta how much better will it look for the PS4, because I will buy it for that console at launch, so I'm really happy.

Elann2008

BF4 is already a huge improvement over BF3.  I've noticed so many differences and improvements that I'm very impressed with.  DICE really did their homework this time.  Good on DICE.

Concerning unlocks, I didn't mind.  I am one of those gamers that like to level up, earn unlocks, and have progression in my games.  That's just me.  I don't like being handed a "giant box of goodies" off the bat. It doesn't give you the incentive to play.  There are no rewards.   Since it's not a single player where you actually beat a level, it only makes sense for a multiplayer like Battlefield and Bad Company series to have unlocks.

On the contrary, don't make it a "buy to unlock" system though.. with all the premium bullcrap.  The premium queuing was another bad call.  It separated the community.  All the players were disbursed into different maps.  But I guess that part hasn't changed with Premium already announced day one.

Design flaws are understandable but charging for unlocks? That's a slippery slope.

I never really got to use planes in BF3. Their unlock system sucked. I'm glad they realized it.

FroMcJoe
FroMcJoe

I thought BF3 had a great unlock system actually. I mean I have always enjoyed flying in games and the co-op mod was great for helo practicing. If you suck with vehicles you still have a game that is COD, if COD had remotely realistic bullet physics and destructible environments.

New game comes out: Company talks it up like it's going to reinvent gaming.
Sequel comes out: Company denounces old game and says they learned from their mistakes, while saying the new one is going to reinvent gaming.

pharus
pharus

I could care less about starting out with nothing. I actually prefer it because that was one of the reasons I kept playing BF3...pumped to unlock the next add-on or weapon. You have to put in your time to earn unlocks like everybody else. This shouldn't turn into a handout for noobs.

G4m3r0uTL4wZ
G4m3r0uTL4wZ

@pharus sadly all games are going that route or ''give us more money to unlock everything''

gammerz26
gammerz26

They should also be slapped for changing the BF4 controls. My BF3 vehicle controls are no longer available (LB/LT for accel/decel) and the spotting button has been moved from the back button to RB on X360. :(

M3o5nster
M3o5nster

@gammerz26 Yeah, the new control scheme is atrocious. I've been killed a few times trying to mark people with my "select" button.

DICE gotta learn, if it aint broke, don't fix it.

okassar
okassar

It was so hard to get the first unlock but the rest was easy because of all the completely helpless noobs in the sky. Too bad I was excited for the guided missile unlock (which takes a while) and it sucks. God, I understand they don't want to make jets OP, but they took the nerfing too far. In BF3, jets were pretty much only good against other jets and helis. However, I used the guided missile cam to mark people and then slow down, swoop in, and kill them with my machine gun.

INF1DEL
INF1DEL

The unlock system was my biggest complaint about the last game. I put 40+ hours into the game and I don't think I ever killed anyone with a jet other than going kamikaze. I never unlocked any usable weapons for it and just gave up.

ICE_PREDATOR
ICE_PREDATOR

@INF1DEL sorry for u bro, I got 400 hours and the jet is my top vehicle, and I'm an avreage pilot

You couldn't even use a straight pull bolt AND a bipod on a rifle. Like really, what person sniping wants to use a flashlight or laser on their rifle? It was so effing dumb

AncientDozer

@emperiox

And the fact you could put a red dot or iron site on a sniper rifle? Ridiculous. Even an acog is pushing it on anything but a battle rifle like the M14 and the SKS.

Ultramarinus
Ultramarinus

@chibi-acer @Ultramarinus It'd be worth something if they told this soon after they launched BF3. Saying it just before they put out their next game means "our old game isn't that good, new one coming out and we did it better, wanna give 60 bucks?"

chibi-acer
chibi-acer

@Ultramarinus Shrug.  Personally I'm not a fan of the series, but in general I prefer when companies admit their mistakes and try to improve, rather than cover up their failings with nonsense talk and continue on in ignorance.

oh and battlefield 4 is sooo much better. with crappy controls and even more dependence on battlelog i cant wait to see what else. just go back to bad company already..

emperiox

@S001_PRIMAL I know! Nobody likes Battlelog. It shouldn't be crammed down our throats. What's wrong with a start menu and a "my soldier" menu? BF2 had it, and it could do literally everything that Battlelog could do from inside the game.
