DICE has no plans to again bring the Battlefield series to a futuristic setting. DICE veteran Lars Gustavsson said during a recent live chat that despite a personal desire to make a sequel to 2006's Battlefield 2142, no such project is in development.

Battlefield 2143 is not in development, at least not yet.

"I would love to do it," he said. "When we announced in the studio that we were going to build Battlefield 2142, a lot of people ran over and wanted to apply for that team. I guess that the creative freedom that comes with a fictional world is something that's tempting when you have made games around historical and contemporary settings for a longer time."

During December 2011, a graffiti tag (at right) found in Battlefield 3's Back to Karkand expansion pointed to DICE possibly getting to work on Battlefield 2143. A representative from publisher Electronic Arts, however, declined to comment.

Elsewhere during the chat, Gustavsson fielded a question regarding the future of the Bad Company spinoff series. He largely dodged the question, but teased there may be news to share in the future.

"Last we heard from the misfits in Bad Company was a postcard in June from Bahamas where Haggard and the group had opened up a beach bar," he said. "It's really up to them…will keep you posted…"

A sequel to 2010's Battlefield: Bad Company 2 would come as little surprise. The game won warm reviews and sold nearly 6 million copies. Additionally, Bad Company 3 was spotted on a developer's resume earlier this year, with EA declining to comment.

The next confirmed Battlefield title is Battlefield 4. A multiplayer beta for the game will launch during fall 2013, with access granted to those who pick up a copy of Medal of Honor: Warfighter.
