DICE defends timing of Battlefield 4 beta

Executive producer Patrick Bach says even though the beta is "quite late," the developer still has time to listen to feedback and implement changes in final game.

The Battlefield 4 beta starts next week, less than a month before the game ships for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Despite the short time between beta and release, developer DICE believes it has time to implement changes in the final game based on feedback from the beta.

"Even if we're doing [a beta] quite late, we still have the opportunity to do some tweaks," executive producer Patrick Bach said in a new video (below). "And of course we want to get feedback not only from the beta, but also from game when it's out on the market. We have a history of following up with the game for months and months after it's been released. So to us, it's an ongoing service."

Battlefield 4 is also coming to next-generation consoles the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 as launch titles for those platforms in November. Since these machines won't be available to the public ahead of launch, DICE can't hold beta testing period specific to these platforms.

Bach acknowledged that this is a less-than-optimal scenario, but explained that some of the general feedback from the current-generation console and PC betas can be carried forward to the Xbox One and PS4 versions of Battlefield 4.

"That's of course a problem that we cannot solve," Bach said. "We wish people had the next-gen consoles earlier because then they could participate in the beta as well. But in general, we are collecting feedback from both the current-gen consoles and the PC beta and applying all that data and information onto the next-gen consoles."

Bach also said in the video that Battlefield 4 game updates for the Xbox One and PS4 versions can be downloaded automatically while the systems are in low-power states, if users enable this setting. "We can just push it out to them," he said.

The Battlefield 4 beta features the Siege of Shanghai map in Conquest or Domination mode. New features and elements like Levolution and Amphibious Assault will be featured in the beta.

Gamers who preorder the Battlefield 4 PC Digital Deluxe Edition, Battlefield 3 Premium members, and owners of Medal of Honor: Warfighter Limited or Digital Deluxe Edition can begin playing on October 1.

On October 4, the Battlefield 4 beta will be opened to all Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC players.

I love BF, there's nothing similar on consoles, but when I first played the BF3 beta and realised that the final version was exactly the same without any fixes, I mean, exploding with bugs and unbalanced gameplay, I got really frustrated ! I don't want to play the beta again and see that when I buy the retail version it will have no changes from the beta version ! It's obvious that DICE has already sent the order to produce the discs ! If at least it was ALL digital, but we know that bluray discs need  to be distributed to the WHOLE WORLD and that requires a huge logistics with weeks of antecipation !
It was clear that DICE in the past focused more on the competition against Call of Duty ( which imo there's none ), than focusing on delivering what they promised.
I hope that DICE learned they don't need to compete against COD anymore because BF can sell itself and they are really different games for different type of gamers ! They need to focus on delivering something "finished" and "functional" and forget this whole marketing and milking !
My grampa used to say that if you have a good product on your hands, you don't need to go out in the streets and scream out loud how good it is, the costumers will come and buy it because it's good, you don't need to worry with the competition !

i love a beta for a game i like. but this is not a beta way to late for it. its a demo plain and simple

I wonder if they've realized that nearly everyone plays betas to play the game early and not to help fix glitches.

Oh Mr Bach, you must think us all retards. No only should a game of this size require a significantly longer beta period, but sometime very soon BF4 will need to be declared "gold master" so it can be duplicated and shipped to stores.

Please stop calling this a beta. It's not a beta. It's a preview. A sales pitch.

Yeahh I expect a choppy release on next gen consoles. Hopefully they can get servers optimized for mass influx with the current-gen build. I want to be playing this game like crazy on the 22nd.

It's a glorified demo. Not completely useless but true betas last for longer than this.

they can only make very small changes for only about one to two weeks. And that is it. It would take at least 2 weeks for distribution How much time do they need to press disk, print and package? Yea if its a real beta there will be some major update crap on day one.

ahmed74
ahmed74

actually releasing the beta this late is better because the final game will be 90% similar to the beta so I can judge the game's multiplayer by the beta

the same thing happened with BF3, unfortunately I was hyped too much for that rushed piece of crap and bought it on launch but not this time around

It's not there as a real beta... only there so people pre order.

No thanx though, BF has turned into a dumbed down console FPS and Origin is over priced tat.

@firedrakes As I said above, retailers already have their shipments in place, so, there's no way they can fix shit at this moment ! What we will see in this demo, it will be on retail version !

pedershk

@AdderD They're more than likely collecting a bucketload of automated feedback, and not really interested in personal feedback.

@AdderD bf3 beta was a glitch nightmare, may be this time is glitch free and a real demo

@drclaw_

not to mention the dynamic weather and network waves in the ocean.

honeslty Im hoping bf4 will be what bf3 should have been and I did enjoy bf3 a lot. I just feel they tried to do so much with that game. It was somewhat of a testing ground for what bf4 will be.  I'm hoping they take what worked from bf3 and improve upon that.

yourdem1ze

@SJGSpook They had Alpha beta. This is more like a server test than anything.

rann89

@SJGSpook That's kind of how it goes now. Create a broken game and just fixes things with updates after release.

GONtheSKYLORD
GONtheSKYLORD

@SJGSpook That's because long betas usually happen with new games and game engines.  BF has been around for forever and they've been working with frostbite for a while. Betas for earlier BF games were much longer and BF3 had a lot of bugs fixed from beta. Time doesn't matter. it is a beta.

UltimateBastard
UltimateBastard

You can be sure any changes they make now will definitely be a day 1 update

blown503

@demondogx I did, I bought warfighter and I bought simcity. I was stupid enough to give them my money for both. But since I earned the money and my mom and dad did not buy this stuff for me I feel the real burn and I am not buying any more crap from EA. They keep sending emails to buy games on origin for 50% and I wont even look at that crap either.

GONtheSKYLORD
GONtheSKYLORD

@Tixylixx You haven't read anything about the game obviously so hush. The things that made some clueless people call it "dumbed down" are gone in BF4. Let's be honest here, battlefield has always been a simple shooter. It's tougher than other shooters but there's nothing complex about BF games.

pedershk
pedershk

@dalua360 @firedrakes Sooo... You never heard about updates for games then, I guess. You know - the ones that are mandatory on BF3 for PC, and won't let you play online unless you apply them on PS3 and Xbox 360?

Most any game these days is "gold master" long before development stops. This has become industry practice.

CorkeyFord
CorkeyFord

@leandrro @AdderD The BF3 Beta was a lot of fun though because it was such a trainwreck. As long as the issues are ironed out before release or remedied in a day one patch, I wouldn't mind another unintentionally funny glitch fest.

xsfseal
xsfseal

@rann89 So much pressure from EA to come out at certain times though. They are still working on the game before the beta, probably implementing changes from E3 and gamescom feedback. I dont really care though as long as I get to play.

demondogx
demondogx

@blown503 @demondogx The reason i boycotted EA over 2 years ago is because i have felt that burn a long time ago myself too

Naxirian
Naxirian

@GONtheSKYLORD @Tixylixx I don't really find anything "complex" about any shooter except the Arma series. Call of Duty is a braindead game, Battlefield requires a little more thought but it's still relatively simple. Arma on the other hand presents you with more controls than you can map to your keyboard and rewards you with instant death if you fail to notice someone hiding in a bush.

dalua360
dalua360

@pedershk

I'm not sure if I understand what is your point, but, updating a game after its release IS exactly what I'm talking about....

Let me break down for you:

People here are discussing that this beta in question is a "late" release because developers won't have time to fix major problems "possibly" found with the data gathered from the feedback given by the beta ( which is the function of a BETA version ), Soooooo, this "beta" is more of a DEMO because if people could think a little bit about how real life works, they would understand that one important things that exists in real life is "logistics" !!!!! Which means that DICE and EA have to distribute ALL the discs worldwide until the release date ! And most of the retailers must have their lot in place at least one week anticipated.... With that, if you're playing a broken beta at this moment, you can be sure that DICE already burned their final version to all game discs and THERE WILL BE an update to fix the shit !

point is: Why calling it a beta ? Why keep releasing broken games ? Why people still support these procedures?

Think about it, if you don't have internet, or worse, if you have a Xbox 360 4gb model, you won't be able to enjoy the game because IT'S BROKEN, needs an update, and it requires a HDD....Shouldn't you receive a discount for that ? You will pay full price, and DICE will give you a broken product.... which they will fix later !!!!

I will never buy a product that needs repair already, why games should become like that?! Don't you people see that ? This is becoming "PROCEDURE", this should be at most, "this time we had to do that", not standard procedure !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Naxirian
Naxirian

@yourdem1ze @Naxirian @GONtheSKYLORD @Tixylixx Nah, I'm a Battlefield fan through and through, played every game ever made in the series, but Arma is a much more complicated game. It's more strategic, it's much, much more hardcore, and you have to really know the game to be good at it. Battlefield on the other hand is easy as piss to pick up, but difficult to master.

yourdem1ze
yourdem1ze

@Naxirian @GONtheSKYLORD @Tixylixx ArmA is simple as hell. It just requires more time, which is boring. Also realism =/= fun. ArmA gets so boring after a while one person ends up throwing it in the trash. The only thing that has kept ArmA alive is mods and that will be the only reason to play ArmA ever. Also Frostbite 3 is more impressive than their engine.
