DICE 'afraid' to release Battlefield 3 mod tools

Developer says it's fearful exploits could arise after releasing mod tools to public; won't do mod support until it can do it "really well."

Battlefield developer DICE has explained why it chose not to offer mod tools for last year's Battlefield 3. Speaking during a GDC Europe session this week attended by Gamasutra, DICE general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson said the studio was fearful of the potential implications.

Mod tools for Battlefield 3? DICE didn't think it was a good idea.

Magnus Troedsson explained that DICE is aware that offering mod tools can help extend the life of a game like Battlefield 3. However, the company decided against it because it was "afraid of all the things that can come with releasing the code," including hacking exploits.

The developer also cited Battlefield 3 being a multiplatform release as a reason it chose not to make public mod tools. Magnus Troedsson said if DICE were to release mod tools, it would want to let console players in, too, and the studio was not prepared to do this.

"If we do mod support, we want to do it really, really well," he said. "We are not ready to do this yet."

DICE offered modding tools for Battlefield 3 predecessor Battlefield 2, which led to a range of offerings, including pirate and zombie mods.

The real reason is that they want people to pay for DLC rather than acquire for free. Dice must think gamers are stupid to feed us that line of bullXXXXX

i want mod support so one day someone will make a zombie mod for battlefield 3, like dayZ

Well they should not be afraid of mod because it is battlefield 3

The reason they are doing this is so they can make more $$$.  They would care less if gamers could play free mods that are awesome.  It is sad that this crap is happening.

@iluvOP  "Lets ride cars and farting dragons with our weewees on display!" That sounds great, where do i sign up?

I recon well see some mod tools for BF3 when EA have run out of ways to milk it. So at least until they have found a way to charge us the release price again for the same game with some frills or it becomes redundant when they release BF4.

BF1942 and BF2 have some amazing mods and I see no serious problems with those games and who cares about consoles modding??? I own both consoles and PC's and I can honestly say that the majority of consoles players wouldn't care about (or know how to ) mod a game. Are we forgetting that BF was originally a PC game? If anything mod development should be released for PC and the console fanboys can man-up and deal with it.  Consoles are bought for simplicity.... PC is bought buy people who know what they are doing and want to do it...

"if DICE were to release mod tools, it would want to let console players in, too, and the studio was not prepared to do this."

So they just don't want to do it. Whoever said bad PR is right.Console players too? Since when was that a must? Stupid.

TheJamin

agreed with everyone.

they saw what happend to skyrim. the mods were better then the DLC and EA are bricking it.

BS. Never had a problem like this with other games. It just extended the life of the game. Mods would make BF3 amazing. They are just afraid they won't be able to sell stupid DLCs.

...So all you fear then is someone cracking the code, making it enjoyable and user friendly and then distributing for no cost on the internet? Yeah, I can see where that would be a cause for concern.

They're scarred of mod tools for sure but not cos of exploits, no they're scarred that with modders on the scene they wouldn't be able to sell overpriced map packs or their premium service.

yellosnolvr

yeah dice is totally right. just look at the source engine modding scene. they've exploited every single source game and ruined their whole communities. all those games are terrible and are unplayable now.

oh wait.........

This isn't the true DICE talking, it's the demon inside them (EA). They know full and well how successful the modding scene for Battlefield 2 and all previous titles have been. And you know what? F*ck the consoles, you owe this to us PC gamers after how badly you lied to us, you switched main platform from PC to consoles mid-development, you removed many features that were present in BF2, and you give the PS3 all content earlier... Can't you at least give us this? Who cares if all console kiddies thinks it's unfair? They need to learn that the world isn't fair anyways.

So basically, they wont release modding tools until after Battlefield 4 is released.

How about release another Battlefield 2 instead of going the CoD route?  Sure, you don't get as much money from it, but nor do you kill your franchise either.

"Afraid" no one would buy DLC when un-paid programmers can make better mods than paid programmers could make DLC.

RapidFirE53211

Afraid that the community might make the game better?

Given all that worthless DRM attached to Battlefield 3 and the dependency on the availability of their Servers for your enjoyment, who would even want to create mods for this game in the first place ?

What sane person would want to create something that after releasing he has no control over anymore ?

Also, EA is not known as a company that looks at the longelivity of things.

The second the income drops below a magic line drawn by their accounting department, all of Battlefield 3 is shut down and a Battlefield 4 will appear, again asking full price and worse for just about the same game.

They also couldn't charge their customers overprice for simple camouflage packs and the like, which is just a texture mod.

You want to mod for that ? Think again.

On the other hand, if it would've been a release by DICE, without EA related to it in any way they'd be interested in long time community support I think and would've long ago released mod tools, map editors and such, maybe even allowing us to host our own servers.

But we'll never know, it's just an assumption I make. (Then again, if it would've been a DICE release without EA having to do anything with it, I might just've bought it)

sknight175216
sknight175216

Dice doesn't want to, or EA doesn't want them too? :P

Ha ha I love blaming everything on EA. Anyway, as far as I'm concerned the only developer that gets my money for full priced games is Bethesda because they not only make excellent games, but they can last for years and years because of the mod tools. Everybody should take a page out of their book.

penguingamer13

A good mod can lead to amazing sales of just about ANY game

A perfect example would be Arma 2 and the day z modAnd if they wanted mods they should have gotten the PC versionIt was said from the beginning that the PC version would be better, so why not keep that promise? I mean PS3 gamers get their DLC first so why not just let PC get mods? In my mind they are just making a bunch of BS excuses.

Pete5506

Just let it happen DICE.

Just think of Project Reality with Frostbit 2 or maybe even a 2142 mod. I would love to see Titan mode with the games engine.

demonic_85
demonic_85

So basically they dont want to release mod tools because they're afraid of of losing control and the real possibility that the community will release better content for free. Also mods for consoles? If they want mods should have bought it for PC.

i can remember modding the older bf games and there were some nice ones such as the star wars versions, i must admit id like to see another star wars bf now, that would be fkn awesome with the new frostbite engine, on hoth or Endor with bits of tree and ewoks flying everywhere, speeders i could go on for hours. Its a tough call for dice, its their product, but as before with previous bfs that were modded it didn't stop people buying them.

10V3n0M01
10V3n0M01

I see why they did this, the new version of the engine has proved to be a little too much for DICE. They don't want to release their code to find 1 month later that people have created a better version than the original game itself. Also remember that EA control money decisions and EA knows that with mod tools there is going to be a lot less DLC customers. I'm going to be optimistic, as I still believe in and appreciate DICE, and say that with BF4 there's going to be mod tools. By then the engine code will be much cleaner and DICE will have a more mature set of tools to work around building some for us. Give it time guys.

1942 never had mod tools did it stop people from making mods no just have to get someone that has alot of time on there hands to crack it they have made new backend for bfbc2 now

I guess EA really has this neat effect on the developers they work with, Bioware pretty much worships the notion of day-one DLC now while DICE just gladly stomped out any potential there was for some pretty darn awesome mods, just because their cute little DLC packages might sell less on the PC.

mrklorox

Well, seeing as how the hackers have cracked the game wide open for cheating already, I can understand his reasoning. However that's entirely on them for not preparing well enough.

But really, as much as I would want BF3 to get mod tools, I wouldn't expect much to come from it. Arma seems to be the place modders go nowadays.

eric_neo3
eric_neo3

More like Dice has been lying to the public about the mods tools and don't want to release the mod tools in fear of a backlash and people not buying DLC.

shadowl

Heres the solution maybe have a system put into place that if your a modder then you have to submit your mod for inspection. To prevent hacks and all that and if it passes then you put it up on a ea downloading site. Or if their worried about profits maybe charge 2.00 at the most so you can get some profit from it, no more than 2 dollars any more than that and no one will do it. Gotta make it cheap for people, and also maybe have it to where 3 mods are chosen for best mod of the month and they win prizes or free entrys for a year. These are just ideas solves some of the problems.

I actually cant believe the editor didn't say more on the mods, there is a hell of a lot more better mods available for BF2 and such then bloody zombie mods lol... Look at battlegroup42 / BF2SP64 / Forgotten Hope / Eve Of Destruction / First Strike star wars mod..

THOSE are the ones worth mentioning!!! geeeez...  :D

guys guys this game is better than cod am just saying and your excuse is uglier than your sin, so stop complaining about mods or something like that cuz if they release the mod tools the ps3 will lose lot of money and dont forget that this game is best without moding and if you are talking about making some zombie mods or something like that please the game is barely have some blood without gore so stop COMPLAINING.

@TheJamin As far as Im concerned, skyrim is even more ravaged and destroyed when I just look at the mods. Lets ride cars and farting dragons with our weewees on display! If the modding communities would grow up, it wouldnt be too bad. And besides, BF is an online game with plenty of online features on battlelog and whatnot so modifying the game would make all of that useless.

@GenDNA The PS3 will lose money if one game gets mod tools? I honestly think punctuation isn't the only thing you're lacking here.

@GenDNA People should only stop complaining if their reason for complaining is meaningless or unreasonable. People are only pointing out that they are suggesting the lack of modding tools is for quality reasons when it's likely for  uncertainty in financial repercussions (they are afraid it will cost them money). Nobody likes being given the EA PR tow-the-line answer from the devs, we want clarity and honesty.
