Diablo III senior producer leaves Blizzard

Steve Parker departs California-based game developer after five-year history at company that involved leading work on dungeon-crawling role-playing game.

by

It has been a long road to release for Diablo III. The game was first announced in 2008 and was at one time expected to be released in 2011. However, one of its senior developers is not sticking around to see it through.

Diablo III is now without one if its leaders.

Writing on Twitter, Diablo III senior producer Steve Parker announced that he is leaving Blizzard and the Diablo development team after five years with the company.

"Hey Twitter, I'm no longer working at Blizzard or on [Diablo III]," he wrote. "I've had a great 5 years there and those guys are going to kill it with Diablo."

Diablo III is currently officially scheduled for an early 2012 release. A recent rumor pointed to the game shipping as early as February 1, but Blizzard was quick to shut down that speculation. Additionally, Blizzard last week announced a host of system changes coming to the game.

I have the opportunity to play the beta. I managed to play through with all the characters except the Witch Doctor, I am working on him now. I am looking forward to the release. This game will be great. Certainly keeps a little lore from the original two Diablo games.

I think torchlight 2 is going to dent diablo 3's overall appeal. I'll still likely buy both though.

Each passing day I lose more interest in Diablo 3...on the bright side each passing day brings me closer to Mass Effect 3 so that's a good thing.

@c3d_dm Yes i don't mind either, because a polished game with no bugs is a 10/10 for me. However a lot of gamers love to rush the developers to release games fast. And by doing so majority of them come out with heavy bugs and BAAAMM game gets 6/10. Chill people the game will come out soon!!! just keep playing wow for now =D As for it being better than D2? i think it will, i mean lets face it D2 was a great game yea, but that was before we saw more innovating techniques these developers use. So yea we all have to take d3 as a whole new game, not what was once here in the past, because the feeling you felt than has become more advanced now!!

Since the major changes in WOW sometime back, everything Blizzard touches is down the tubes. Including WOW. I quit playing when they changed all the characters. I still play Diablo II LOD and from the sound of it, I will continue II. I play alone so whatever happens in III unless I can play solo I won't bother to spend my money.

@Cozm1kaos " i agree the wait...like all blizzard games are ridiculous." I, for one, don't really mind waiting a while if the game gets released with nearly no bugs and turns out to be an amazing gaming experience... but this about the senior member leaving just before the release sounds fishy... I'm concerned the game may not be as amazing as it was supposed to be...

Something tells me that all is not quite right with D3. All the odd news just doesn't pass the smell test. Internal conflict? Investor concerns? Could be anything, but usually with awesome games (especially awesome sequels), you don't find long-term and senior members of the team jumping ship prior to launch. Makes one wonder what is going on over there.

What are we to make out of all of this? It seems that Blizzard dont know "when it`s done"...radical changes being made to the game in the same Q1 promised release-window...meanwhile producers leaving the scene?! Get it over with already...

@SeptuagintXXX "Activision probably told blizzard to Consolize it so that it can be released for PS3 and Xbox." Agreed... Unfortunately we're seeing WAY too much "quantity vs. quality" in regards to video games these days. "It's all about the Benjamins", it seems...

does not matter, how bad we think or what we say. We all know that a purchased copy will be installed on our computers =). The game looks amazing no doubt, but yes i agree the wait...like all blizzard games are ridiculous. But hang in there, we already waited 10 years before any news!!

Diablo 3 is going to be a great game. But, the way Blizzard is handling the pre-hype of the game is horrible. The company is also dumbing things down too much for new players as they did in WOW, and in my opinion their overall approach is going to cost them a lot of fans who desire a more 'veteran - unforgiving hardcore' approach. I believe it already has. D3 will be great, but it won't reach the standards that a lot of people like myself had for it years ago....

My advice to Blizzard is: Never take the yesterday's success as today's fortune -- Your fans, although they support you, they're not stupid. When they support you, you better take real effort than never before, or else you can only kill yourself. :)

I hope that this game is as good as the hype around it would suggest but as many have said, the wait has been so drawn out that anticipation is lost to me already...the changes they are speaking of are probably (as many have speculated) for console builds of the game (seems the PC market wasn't enough for Blizz)...

antoniooi

Well...I have a feeling that the new Diablo III is gonna be an epic lost that very few people can imagine....Ego covers the truth my dear friends.... ^^ How do I know? -- Coz I keep yawning while watching their game play videos. :P And guess what, they dragged the release date, too long until what they had been invested since 2008 get outdated and they can't simply throw it away just like that. While attempting to hold it until the release date by hoping to make some fortune out of it, they kill themselves. ^^

WoW was dumbed down for the casual gamer, i certainly hope they don't do the same for Diablo III.

He's not happy how Diablo 3 ended up looking. I think they made a console version and just totally ruined it for PC. They must have destroyed it so it looks exactly like the consoles. He doesn't want to be part of that disgust.

".. those guys are going to kill it with diablo" or "...those guys are going to kill diablo with it" :) PS: long time blizzard fan, not a hater. PPS: any word yet on release dates for the rest of starcraft 2 yet?

dRuGGeRnaUt
dRuGGeRnaUt

Question: So if they are just now adding/addressing/changing things in the game based on beta feedback, won't they need to "playbalance" the changes they've made? Knowing Blizzard, this "answering criticism" will add months onto the release date. - Me? I've been waiting to get a new PC for when diablo releases. Problem is, I've been sick of letting the money sit in my savings, and the other day I bought a PS3 instead. I also got 10+ games for it for under $60 too, so score. - Maybe it will be like starcraft 2 was for me: wait FOREVER, get sick of waiting, build a PC, starcraft 2 comes out years and years later(in pieces no less), and my pc is too ancient to run it decently. Thus = not buying starcraft 2. - I think i've got enough backup of games now with xbox/ps3 that Ill be busy for quite some time still.

@OverlordGunnar Thanks for the explanation. I really didn't understand what he meant by that and I wasn't trying to imply anything bad about the game. But I guess prejudiced thumbing down is one of the brightest activities here on Gamespot.

OverlordGunnar
OverlordGunnar

@GAMERALL If I was going on stage to play gig and claimed that I was going to absolutely kill it, I would be using that phrase to imply that I was confident I would have a flawless performance. Not sure about the rest of the world, but it's common slang here in Australia. That said, i do worry about this game a little, I really hope that there is enough depth to the gameplay to keep me interested. I'll still buy this day one, but blizzard will have to pull a rabbit out of their hat to provide a game in this style that can stand up to Dark Souls and Skyrim, after all, many of us gamers have limited time and too many great games to choose from.

I'm pretty sure he's talkin about all the changes that Blizzard wants to make after the beta.... they spent years trying to bring something new, than they asked players what they wanna see and ofc players asked for more Diablo2 gameplay, so now they're going to erase most of the new stuff they made just to please the audience. Diablo 3 may turn like Starcraft 2: a good game, but just more of the same.

Well... if he bumped heads with some of the horny perverts in charge of WoW content, I don't blame him for getting out.

Hmm, after watching the above video, Diablo 3 doesn't look all that different than Diablo 2 (gameplay I mean, graphics are obviously a lot nicer). What's new with Diablo 3? The inventory screen looks the same, skills are generally the same style of upgrading, etc. I'm thinking I may pass on D3 and just get Guild Wars 2. I fee like Titan Quest already gave me enough of an upgrade over Diablo 2. I guess I just don't see the selling point of Diablo 3 yet. And yes, I've beat all previous Diablo games many times over.

@Evenios When has the Diablo fanchise ever been about graphics? Seriously, go back to BF3. Graphics whores are ruining gaming. It's because of people like you that companies are pushing new console iterations before the current gen has been fully realized.

Evenios

personally the news about the game isnt the best, seems they made a major change to the game recently and now the head guy is leaving. (though as someone else pointed out maybe its just because his job is basically done with it) but still..... Honestly i think with Torchlight 2 coming out Diablo III will be OK...but isnt going to be the best thing ever. The graphics ive seen are so so but kind of lack of detail in many areas so we'll see.. this game will still make a lot of money and have lots of players like StarCraft II has (even though i think starcraft 2 is way over rated) personally i wish they would just stick with World of Warcraft, that is their baby and there are tons of things they can add and improve to it would be nice instead of spending resources on these other franchises which really does not hold a candle to the player base that world of warcraft has......to put that into making the MMO better!

current build of beta would get an 80 percent score. i find that playing the barbarian I'm still getting that addicting feeling, and i wish they'd get this out asap, imo it's done.

Well, he did say "I've had a great 5 years there and those guys are going to kill it with Diablo." So, it sounds like he's confident that the game will be great and his words show no sign of any problems (game cancellation scares are scary X___x). But, as far as I am concerned, the only good news that could possibly come out regarding Diablo 3 at this point, is a release date announcement that sticks to the original Q1 2012 release proposed near the end of last year.

Neosword

This probably sounds worse than it actually is. The game is relatively close to being finished so no doubt he's already had his input into the game and didn't want to wait around for the nitpicking before launch.
