Diablo III sales rise to 14 million

Blizzard confirms dungeon-crawler reaches new sales milestone after Xbox 360 and PS3 launch.

Diablo III has now sold more than 14 million copies since launch in May 2012, Blizzard Entertainment president Mike Morhaime said today during a post-earnings financial call.

This figure, which encompasses all versions of the game, is up from 12 million announced earlier this year.

The milestone was achieved after Diablo III was released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in September. A sales breakdown between PC/Mac and consoles was not provided.

Diablo III is also in development for PlayStation 4, though no release date has been announced yet. The game's auction house mechanic will be removed in March 2014.

The Diablo III: Reaper of Souls expansion, announced during Gamescom in August, is currently in development for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3.

Blizzard is stupid for taking so long to release their garbage on all systems. What makes them think they are worthy of exclusivity anyway? They are no Halo. Never have been... StarCraft? WOW? and Diablo... Big Deal.

That's disheartening when there are so many better games out there. I don't get it.

The funny thing is that DB3 can be a XB1 game. The Kinect could be used for better interaction!

Blizzard we won't port PC to XB1 yet. LOL

Maybe they should make the expansion an XB1 Kinect exclusive.

It's too bad sales don't make up for how pathetic and awful the game is.

Just hope blizzard learns a lesson from this mess..The skill system is horrible, the auction house is horrible..You look at grim dawn and path of exile better skill slots...The lack of loot is not great on the pc version..Im hearing its better on the 360 which is bullcrap if you ask me..Auction house worste design flaw in a game ever..Some may like to sell for real life money..Its not why I play these type of games..Ill play for the fat loot that drops..Finding a legendary and hearing that ding is worth while in my book..Expample I played diablo 2 for six hours my first run through,Wham I got one..Played diablo 3 for 3 acts not one legendary..Had a friend who had five..Ya I was unlucky but not the point..Than when you do check the auction house out..The legendaries are all the same looking its very sad..Diablo 2 you had a flame sword it looked like flame..Im playing other games an the items look awesome..Im having more a blast in grim dawn the first act..Than I did the first act of diablo 3..Hope you guys on consoles get to play both grim dawn an path of exile..

Diablo 3 on 360 looks like crap. True story.

I'll take crap visuals vs. always on connection though.

Just my 2 cents as to why D3 didn't sell much on this gen consoles:

#1 - Most console players that are fans of Diablo also have PCs and already had played the game (~1.5 years old game)

#2 - Alot of new players don't know Diablo, since Blizzard decided to not launch Diablo 2 on console.

#3 - And some of the few new players that were into getting it, might got scared away by some of the critics on PC. Who were obviously not happy about the auction house, loot drops, the game being so cartoony and so on...

#4 - Lack of advertisement to the average gamer (new player).

(* i played all of the Diablo games, i have D3 on both PC and PS3 and amazingly i have more fun on the PS3)

I just wonder if this game would have originally been made for consoles if it would be received different. You can't really take the PC crowd and their expectations seriously when it comes to reality. I kid, but I bet it would be a whole new ballgame had this been meant for consoles. I also wish I could have experienced DII back in the day.

It plays like a terrible button masher from the 90's. When will PC gamers grow up and stop hyping 90's styled games like this and RTS's? It even looks like 90's Sega Genesis RPG dungeon crawler I used to play.

Then when you ask a PC gamer what the best games are on PC, they list point and click adventures...... LOL

Then they have terrible hack/slash MMO's which are boring and tedious to play. So much boring grinding. How is that fun? Ill never understand PC gaming. It should stay in the 90's where it belongs.

Of course they didn't provide console sales, because it sold less than half a million on consoles

I can't wait to give this a crack on my PS4. I've never played any of the Diablos, but by reading some of the comments from some disappointed people, this is a good thing as a newbie to the series.

It is still upset me that Kevin V. gave 9/10 score . I trusted him the most from any reviewers. It is poor sale on the consoles 2 M vs 12 M  . How many copies are BF4 or COD sale on consoles >>> PC .  Even the superior version of Diablo III is on console .

Finally Blizzard sold some copies, because people just pirate on pc.

When i think of a bad game, my first thought is any game from Blizzard. Their luck that Activision saved them from bankruptcy.

Nanomage

It had sold over 12M on the PC in 2012 so the console numbers are pretty terrible.

Diablo 1 and 2 were both great games and i was looking forward to 3 til i found out about the online requirement, for me that was enough to not bother with it, i dont like being forced to be online to play a game.

I played this only on the 360 and think it's a pretty good game. I can't even imagine not having direct control of the characters like the pc version. That must suck, having to click a spot and then your character moves there instead of you controlling him directly.

So far I've played through once with the monk and I'm on my second play through with the Witch Doctor (Nightmare mode).

I'm actually surprised this sold a few million copies on consoles because there was zero marketing and nothing about it on the gaming sites aside of the review. It's like they revamped the whole thing for the consoles but then didn't bother to tell anyone about it. I'm also hoping this game doesn't come out on the X1. I already logged so many hours on the 360 version and I'd have to start all over again on the X1. For anybody getting this on PS4, I would recommend NOT playing it on the PS3 at all. You'll just be pissed you gotta lose all the good shit you found.

The only bad thing about this game is the bad level designs. Some of the levels just suck. Like I hate the levels that are the old ruins, when you're looking for the guys head. It looks like you're walking around in the basement of an old, collapsing pyramid. Those levels just suck! Everything looks the same. It's like they copied and pasted the entire thing from a single section. Very boring.

But to anybody on a console that hasn't played this yet, I would definitely recommend it. The demo doesn't even let you pick any of the good classes. Plus there's a trunk where you can store items that are accessible to all the different characters you use. For example, if I'm playing as the Witch Doctor and I pick up a good item for the Demon Hunter, I can put it in the trunk and then when I play on a different saved game as the Demon Hunter that item will be in the trunk. It's a pretty fun game and the loading is super fast.

So the game only sold less than 1 million copies on consoles .? Shame , the game on consoles is so polished . Consoles pirates should've bought it . JK .

@Gladestone1 You and every other PC gamer my friend. No one likes Diablo 3, it's amazing that it sells.

Grenadeh
Grenadeh

@NeoBillbine It really doesn't look any different on 360 or PS3 than it does on PC. The game was made with shit graphics in the first place because it was meant to be a console game. Not sure why they disgraced us with its presence on PC.

Grenadeh
Grenadeh

@SeiKN The critics on PC should just be the critics in general - it's a shitty, disappointing, joke of a Diablo game and Blizzard never should have made it.

Grenadeh

@tightwad34 Yea I was about to jump your shit lol. The PC market is Blizzard's ONLY market. For them to release Diablo 3 the way they did is absolutely unacceptable.

zerofrust

@tightwad34

It's the PC community keeping Blizzard financially afloat...not the consoles crowd. It didn't wait for the consoles version to reach the million sales.3 millions sold in 24h hours on PC alone compared to less than 500000 copies sold on both consoles  combined the 2 first week...you get the picture...

When it comes to dungeon crawling,PC it is.

Grenadeh

@stuff238 Broseph, all dungeon crawlers play that way. The difference being D1 and D2 weren't just "spam spam spam spam", D3 is.  And you stfu, telling us to "stop hyping outdated games"

No one says point and click adventures, ever, you're stupid.

For real! Console gamers want regenerating health and shields on 24/7. Get with the times folks, we want games that play themselves.

@stuff238  then stay on consoles and enjoy limited gaming

pc's have 10 time more games than consoles and most of the games that are both on pc and consoles are better on pc ( mods and every thing ). you dont like rts, mmo's and point and clic adventure games fine but a good pc will always crush any console

@GH05T-666 so you can spend $60 on one more act and 1 more character class?  Enjoy the CoD updates as well.  Those are only $15 each release.

@VAMPYREANGELUS Smart move, it was even worse when the game was released. Some of us couldn't even get on. My internet connection is only decent, so if anyone else uses it at home the game does not work. Also, it's not Diablo 1 or 2. I really regret buying this game more and more.

@Vodoo

I've played both versions and while it's easier on the hands for long term play on console it's not nearly as precise.  It's true you have to use the mouse to move, but it's not hard to move with the mouse.  You also use the mouse to target things.  Targeting on the console appears to be automatic, but you don't always target what you want to.  I found abilities that let you escape quickly (probably the best improvement over the original) didn't work as accurately on console.  The mouse helps a lot for precision.  I also like having lots of loot dropping and being able to navigate the inventory with a mouse.  The PS4 version might be a bit better regarding inventory since it has the touchpad.

Fanible
Fanible

@Vodoo You can set your keys to move your character as well.  You dont HAVE to click where you move, but that is a persistent option, if you so choose.  Rather you just press the move key and then the character follows whichever direction your mouse is pointing.

And who cares if it comes out for the Xbone?  Why would you be forced to get it for that instead of continuing to play it on the 360?

Vodoo

@Cloud_imperium Where do you get that number? According to the article, the console sales were roughly 2 million.
