Diablo III has now sold 15 million copies

Total lifetime sales of Blizzard Entertainment's dungeon-crawler reach new milestone across all platforms.

by

Diablo III has now sold 15 million copies across all platforms, Activision Blizzard announced today during a post-earnings financial call. The last sales update for the game came in November, when the company announced 14 million sales.

The game originally launched for PC in May 2012 and came to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in September 2013. A PlayStation 4 version is slated to arrive sometime in 2014, but so far no mention has been made of an Xbox One iteration, despite numerous retailer listings.

The Diablo III: Reaper of Souls expansion launches on PC and Mac on March 25. It's been confirmed for the PS4, but so far we've yet to hear if it's also coming to Xbox 360 and PS3. For more on Diablo III, check out GameSpot's review.

I played hundreds of hours in D1 and D2 on PC back in the day, but the couch co-op alone makes the console version better.   ...but online multiplayer?  Why would I even be playing Diablo for online MP?  LOL -- way too many FAR better games for that.

does that include the 10 million copies given away free to wow players?

Lol at all the people saying the console version is better

Console version is ruined by mass item duping & hacked characters, the console version is only better for single player & local co-op, but not multiplayer

From what I played it's not that bad, still looking forward to the PS4 release.

And after all this time people still keep coming back to bash this game. Such a trauma for just a game if nobody can just deal with it and continue with their lives. xDD

It's hilarious, you see complaints all over about the game since day 1, yet it pulls off sales like this anyway.

What does that tell us? That gamers are hypocritical consumers.

These are rather sad news. This means that Blizzard will settle with making dull games, since they sell anyway.

Well they better ride the gravy train while it lasts. Not seeing another dime from me and a lot of other Diablo fans.

I actually have a blast playing this with my brother on the PS3. Too bad they had to ruin the PC version and thankfully I was not one of the unlucky ones who had to wade through the initial online-only problems diablo 3 had 2 years ago. Hopefully Reaper of Souls will come to PS3, but if not I had fun with the vanilla anyway. Not the greatest hack n slash (still hold LOTR: Return of the King in 1st place in that category), but its a decent sort.

Well, I was worried about buying this game following the launch debacle, but then decided what the hell, give it a go and surprise, surprise, it turns out to be great fun, still playing and levelling and looking forward to Reaper of souls.  Multiplayer co op is great fun and the graded difficulty stages offered are well balanced.  Keep it up Blizzard you managed to stay in the game. Nearly scored an own goal, but you have turned it around. :D

WOW... so ridiculous to see such a shallow and disappointing game with a mediocre story sold more than some games with terrific story and gameplay truly deserve. well i guess most people bought this because it was a Blizzard game i'm just glad I didn't.

I bought Diablo 3 for Playstation 3. It is a great dungeon crawler. Since it is coming to Playstation 4. Or a least an expansion of sorts. It is worth another go.

I got lucky and got this game for $10 brand new so i cant complain at all...  It may not be as good as Diablo 2, but for the price it was well worth it.

I'm one of those 15 million suckers, had to pay scalpers more than a premium price to buy it too on launch day due to poor distribution. Only to be greeted with server error messages. The game itself is half decent, not terrible but certainly didn't live up to the hype and the legacy of it's predecessor. Still clocked over 100 hours into it cause my friends were playing it at the time and cleared inferno with a couple of different characters. The game just feels shallow and pointless after a while. I definitely won't be buying Reaper of Souls. Even if they do eventually make Diablo 4, will till the word of mouth gets around then decide.

I've been playing the hell out of this game on PS3. Currently on my hell difficulty playthrough. I cannot speak for the PC version but I thoroughly enjoyed it on the console.

PS3 version of this game is really fun. Cant believe they bother releasing RoS on PC first which is a fucking waste of time when this game was made to be on console in the first place.

I bought the Playstation 3 version of Diablo 3 on the day that it was released and have not anything else. Diablo 3 features my favorite gameplay. I also have Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, Dungeon Siege 3 and Dungeon Hunter Alliance. Diablo 3 is my favorite. It isn't perfect. I would have preferred character progression to be similar to Champions of Norrath. Playing online with other people has been a lot fun, despite a few crashes.

I might get it whenever it comes out on X1, but with all the awesome games coming out this year I'm not sure if I'll have time.

The biggest problem with the game is that was too short. You could beat the game in six hours. Also they took out the character biuld for the game. Basically one the hardcore elements of any action rpg. They wanted to hold your hand when can to skills. Path of exile and torch light 1and 2 are good examples on how skill progression should be done. Accessibility is killing blizzard games. Just look at WOW. Making it easier to play so more people will be able to play it has backfired in their face.

Just goes to show a game that's total shit can still sell well if the previous one was good.

@blackothh  No, it doesn't and it wasn't 10 million. "Only" around 1 million WoW players bought the annual pass and got Diablo 3 for free.

@parlitooo  I'm no D3 fan myself, but I disagree. Path of Exile takes all the worst things about ARPGS, it's incredibly grindy, bland, boring, has probably the most underwhelming  and unsatisfying combat I've ever experienced (which is arguably one of the most important features along with loot). The skill tree is almost just a huge web of passive crap, that gives the illusion of complexity and depth and lacks almost completely any sense of reward for levelling up.

I don't mean to hate on that game, it has some fantastic features. But at least for me, one of the most important features in such grindy games MUST be satisfying and visceral combat. Diablo 3 nailed this, but got almost everything else wrong unfortunately.

Grim Dawn thankfully seems to have the right idea.

@sad_dorito For me the original Diablo is the best game ever.

P.S. I don't care about multiplayer.

dani_i89

@somberfox Any true Diablo fan would agree this game is terrible. I was caught in the hype and played it for 3 months. Then it just sunk in. This game appeals to casual gamers. Diablo should have stayed dead in number 2.

@somberfox Or that the people posting comments on gaming sites are not the majority of consumers :P

@Litchie  the only reason they sold 15m copies was becuz of d2 they wont ever sell this many copies of any other blizzard game

@FTB_Screamer  For every jaded whiner like you who drops out of their fanbase, three more new gamers will join and replace you.  Sorry, but your dimes just aren't as important as you think they are.

@sirpsychosexy91  I would have gotten D3 on the PC if not for the online requirement. I did play the demo on 360, and it was pretty good, but I'd prefer the PC version, so I didn't buy it.

I liked your comment, because I agree; the LotR games were the best hack'n'slash games ever. After playing them, hack'n'slash has virtually disappeared from my radar, because no other game could compare.

@davehammer69  "Game feels shallow and pointless" ...  "Clocked over 100 hours into it".

So either you're into self-punishment, a hypocrite or just plan dumb?  Which is it?

@davehammer69 we (PC gamer) should file a petition for the new ip from Blizzard i and every one wonder how long Blizzard would survive with just 3 old ips.

@gameroutlawzz  You dont think clearly it seems. Out of this 15mil sales, 13.5 are on PC(regardless how good or not the game is), so how they cant release it on PC first?

@ivanfred you sir are lucky to not have had to deal with the horrid abomination that is the pc version

@masakijoe  You can beat most of the games in 6h if you don't "scout/explore" around a bit!

I have a total completion complex that requires me to go in every single corner of every room everytime.

Diablo3 took me at least 2 weeks (Playing about 1~2 hours a night) to clear for the 1st run.

I'm pretty satisfied with its length.

Thanatos2k

@Shielder7 It does.  It's why Resident Evil 5 is Capcom's best selling RE game, and RE6 failed to meet expectations.

You only get to cash in on previous success once, then it goes downhill.

@Shielder7I disagree. I though Diablo 3 was good. Not as good as the old ones but still enjoyable. Can't wait for the expansion . I hope it comes to the PS3.

@dani_i89 @somberfox  Because *you* don't like it, you are a *true* Diablo fan?  Wtf does that even mean?  True fan.  Did your mother drop you on your head as a baby, because you come off as mentally challenged.
